Why The Bills Should Draft Offense
Prickly Pete replied to Chilly's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree, but all indications are that the D-line isn't the focus of Wrex's defense (a big reason why Williams shut down last season), so why dedicate top picks to a position that isn't as important as LB or even Safety (both weaknesses on this team), in this defense? -
Why The Bills Should Draft Offense

I don't understand why people on one hand say "we lost Mario, we have to replace him with a high pick", yet on the other hand say how crappy he played. If he played terribly, then having a journeyman replace him shouldn't be a loss. I think he played crappy, and there is no urgency to use a high pick on his replacement. I think linebackers are more import in Wrex's defense, and would prefer they concentrated on getting some quality at that position. -

I don't know what rock you live under, but Prince was still prominent (so is Neil Young) in the culture around me. I live in LA, and 5 years ago he did a 21 night residency at the LA Forum. It was a huge deal. He wasn't Flock of Seagulls. It's gonna be a long time before most people won't be able to name 3 songs by Mick. Especially considering that he lived in Minneapolis (not LA or NYC), any appearance by Prince in the media was well covered. He was still "relevant". Greggy and I agree! -

Prince wasn't a flash in the pan, or has -been. He has been touring and performing to large numbers of people, worldwide, pretty much continuously since he first reached the masses. Merle Haggard was great, but nowhere near the level of success of Prince. To some, Haggard may be a more important figure, but worldwide, Prince leaves him in the dust. If you don't dig Prince, step aside, why **** on people that liked him? No one here **** all over Merle Haggard when he died. -

Find an actual quote from Clapton...he never said it. It's apocryphal, so it's silly to lord it over other people. A great musician, exceptional guitarist, incredible songwriter. A visionary. Possibly the greatest live performer of his era. He did put out a lot of crappy tunes, though. -
Really? On a pass rush? I have seen a guy slide off one, and get a little bit on another player, but it doesn't happen often. I mean, I wanna see some footage of this, or it's nonsense. And while a great O-lineman can shut down a great defender (as I already noted), the defender can line up somewhere else. If a DC likes, he can just line up the weakest D-lineman on the future Hall of Famer O-lineman, and it's a waste of the great's talent ("on 3rd down, let's line up Sean McNanie on Munoz....hehehe") I know all the counters to this argument (yes, the offense can scheme around it, but still the individual rusher is having a bigger impact).
-
That's why I broke off to talk about the impact of a single great player on either "stopping sacks" or "creating sacks". One great O-lineman isn't going to stop the whole defense from getting sacks, and can only occupy one defender. But one great rusher can get them, or at least occupy more opposing players.
-
Yeah, that was the problem. I bet Carolina would say "stopping a sack is more important", no?
-
It was really a tangent off the OP's question. Stopping sacks is more important than getting them, to me. But as far selecting at the top end of the draft, so much is dependent on the team's situation, but I think generally, a pass rusher is a better, more impact, single player option. This is another good point. To me, football is all about "err on the side of aggression."

You guys can stick with cherry-picked individual cases, and I'll go with physics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXunnaaYtz0

What if you have "adequate" O-linemen? What if getting an elite WR or TE forces defenses to use another guy in coverage instead of as a rusher? I think guys that pull the rush away from the QB can be as great an asset to a QB. Obviously, the O-line needs to be adequate (I think the Bills O-line is okay, and could be improved well enough, without using a 1st round pick) I'm okay with drafting an O-lineman at the top of the draft, but only if the O-line is in shambles, or the LT is just terrible.
-
Of course, some might consider that the most important part of the battle, skewing the equation. But regardless, an O-lineman, can only engage one other player.
-
Thanks. This line of thinking occurred to me when considering drafting a WR vs. O-lineman. Obviously, there are lots of variables, and every team has different needs, etc., but O-linemen are all pretty much limited to engaging only one other player.
-
I look at it like this, a great O-lineman can only occupy one guy. A great pass rusher can draw 2 or even 3 guys to him. You can line up your crappiest rusher against the great O-lineman, and his talent is wasted. With a great pass rusher there will usually be a few more options of where you can line him up.
-
So what?
-
Every player isn't the focus of the defense, with plays designed to attack him whenever he has the ball. But then, you know that. It's just fun to act like TT is just another QB, not a smallish QB, that runs the ball a lot.

JP Lossman 17-20... The completion % was already discussed, and I'm not worried about that either.

Patriots release Dominique Easley

Those are all opinions. All of them. Good day, sir. -
I agree, and that's what bothers me. I think we (Whaley, and the fans) will regret passing on him. It could be the first good opportunity to get a great prospect, in a long while. If he gets out of the 1st round (which I doubt), he will be snatched up in the first 6 picks of the 2nd, maybe even someone trading up to get him.

I don't like Brady acting like a whiner either. That doesn't mean it's any better coming from a Bills fan. If I could send a direct message to Tom Brady about his whining, I would. Can't tho... My "agenda" is to point out when Bills fans on this board are whining. It's a bad look. -

Waah. If there is any way to spin a story about the Patriots in a negative way, any way to overblow a sliver of information (or misinformation) into a controversy, it will make it's way to this board. Waaaah! -

They are so mean. -
? I mean, I would hate to pass on a great QB prospect, just to get Wrex a replacement for the D-line (which doesn't seem to be the featured position in his defense). Denver won't pass on him at 31, if he is there.
