Why Brandon will get the best coach here.
bigK14094 replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Whatley's participation in selecting the coach is critical, since he is heir apparent at GM. that would mean, to a prospective coach, that he might survive the change in Leadership there if he gets a winning season and Whatley gets the brass ring. BUT, the gorilla in the room is Ralph Wilson's health. When the Bills are sold, the new owner will want his people in place, and Brandon, Whatley etc etc can go out the window in a heartbeat. So, despite the prestige of the NFL head coaching job, there is the air of instability in the situation that will argue against a first choice coach taking the job. Be prepared for the possibility that the Bills will be disappointed wrt their first or second choices. -
No local TV. Sports desks don't have the juice to break into the Rose Parade, bowl games, etc. Typical small town situation.

Russ Brandon named President/CEO
bigK14094 replied to Wagon Circler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually, Mr Wilson tried this once before, with Tom Donahue. Didn't work that time, as Mr Wilson booted him out after a few years (rightfully so, by the way) If Ralph lives so long (I wish him the best) and Brandon fails, he will also get the boot. So, the concern mentioned above is real, and actually good, since we need Mr Wilson to boot Brandon if he doesn't do the job. -
Russ Brandon named President/CEO

this makes some sense to me, although I don't like. Brandon is not a football mind, and should not be fooling with that side of the business. (President or not) Having said that, IF I was planning to have Buddy around a little while longer, and have, say, Whatley take over. AND, I wanted to have Whatley report to Brandon at that time. AND, I wanted to avoid an racial overtones when the change is made, I would have Nix report to Brandon until he is gone, and his replacement Whatley then automatically reporting to Brandon. It would be bad optics to make the promotion and change of reporting at the same time. Anyhow, thats in the for what its worth category. -
No way

I don't have the stomach for this anymore.

Peter king says Chan gone on Monday...
bigK14094 replied to OhIDunno's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Brandon doesn't seem like the most probable leak source. As team president, he likely has the ability to keep his mouth shut. Even if Gailey is being fired, he deserves to hear it first from his management, not from the media. these leaks are really low class in terms of treating people right. -
CJ had a great season and is a great talent. But, I did notice, the Jets in a loosing effort did stop CJ in the running game...check out the stats. My recollection is that Jason Peters attitude went bad after making the pro bowl. Not so sure I care if our guys get that recognition after that experience.

Voicing a minority opinion, I think Galley has a chance of staying if he dumps his buddy Wanny, and gets a good D coordinator. The offense is much better than the Jauron years (how soon we forget those offenses that were 31st in the league) The D is much worse, totally mismanaged. Wanny doesn't have the modern NFL mentality, and we need a stong 4-3 coordinator. Could come down this way...at least it would not surprise me. Of course, it would not surprise me if both Nix and Gailey were fired. The meetings in Detroit this week will determine their fate, and if Chan has a plan, he might get one more crack. Just thinkin out loud. Been watching this stuff for decades, and I remember Ralph keeping Harvey Johnson. Anything is possible here.
-
Yes, the defensive side of the ball is worse than the Jauron years for sure, but the Offensive side of the ball is much better than the Jauron years. They were virtually dead last in offense under Jauron. So, the big failing as HC has been the 3x4 4x3 mess. And, coaching is as big a part as lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball. But, the changes themselves , interms of playuer unfamiliarity with scheme, create performance problems. So, changing schemes two of three years was reallly poor planing. Actually a good decision to go back to 4x3, I think, and should benefit from two years in a row next year. OF course, that is assuming we don't bring in a high flyer who wants to go back to 3x4...don't think I could stand that move again. Brandon is a classic non football guy running an organization. He doesn't like the record and its impact on selling tickets, so he wants a change. But, his abilities to judge football matters is almost zero in terms of personnel. So, I hope Ralph is making these assessment on the football side and substantial discounting of Brandon's input. Then again, Ralph picked Harvey Johnson, back in the bad old days, so maybe we shouldn't counton that either. (the bad old days were 2-14, these are the new bad old days, not that low yet)

Well, after the terrible game against the Phins, I am not sure he deserves the effort to insure the 1000 happens, On the other hand, I don't think he has a mean bone in his body, and wish him well. And, as a fan, I root for him. Go Stevie!

Roster better now than it was 3 yrs ago?
bigK14094 replied to Maddog69's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know about the statement about the record....I will say the Offense is better under Chan, and more entertaining. But, the defense is worse under Gailey, the 3x4 4x3 shift has been terrible, and the coaches he picked have not done the job. THAT is Chans worst failing as head coach, not the Offense and Fitzpatrick. The offense would be good enough to win with a respectable defense, something we have not seen in Chan's three years. The only thing I can say in his defense is that many coaches will not come here because of the unstable franchaise situation. -
Sports Illustrated coaching change article

Well, I guess I am a serious minority opionion here, but I think Chan is slight favorite to stay. Ralph won't listen to the media (Brandon will, though) IF past practice is followed, there will be a review next week with Mr Wilson, with Nix, Gailey and Brandon present. We will know after that meeting Who is staying in the management of the team. I remember Chuck Knox coming back from Detriot after that meeting, and announcing after 5 years that he would not be retained. (no playoffs) So, could be next week, but might run into the following week, depending on when they do their review. If NIX goes, Whatley is a favorite, as THAT would constitute continuity, which IS Mr Wilson's style. -
Landry Jones has big time production at OK, and he is a four year player, something that NIX really likes.

Sanchez to start this weekend vs. Bills
bigK14094 replied to Maybe Someday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was never a Sanchez believer, still am not. Doesn't mean the Jets will win...Sanchez is really a looser. -
This is correct. My view is that we should take this game as a opportunity to work in a few folks we want to find out about. guys who are on the roster and haven't played. (for example, Easley) Help with the talent evaluation over the winter. No crime in this, everybody wants to do well, play to win, to have a job next year.
-
You lost me where you mention the media....don't give a rat about those folks and their thoughts. they write to sell papers....have little credibility with me. Have been watching the Bills since 1960...yep , and old timer, and still have season tickets. Believe me, its been worse, lots worse. Lived through the 2-14 years in the 80's

Not so fast.... No, Fitz will be on the team in 13. You are right about Mario, however.

How on Earth are we favored v. the Jets?
bigK14094 replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We can be the best of the worst in the AFC East! (if we win) IF we loose, we can be the worst of the worst, like our record shows. -
The Buffalo players all suffer from being in a small market, and not getting national exposure. don't see them on ESPN to oftern, compared to a lot of those other guys on winning teams. Lynch and whitner make it with out teams, neither one had anything near a pro bowl year in Buffalo, both player had best years of average here. Coaching mostly, I think. Of course, Jason Peters attitude went south after he made the pro bowl, and refused to honor the last two years of his contract.

Jim Kelly has a lot of positive attributes. He was smart enough to tell the politicians he didn't want to run for office. Right there, I think that means he is smart enough to help the front office. Seriously again, the guy is community minded, has the respect of the area popluation. Have no idea what he might do there, but don't feel bad at all if they bring him on board. Maybe to little of that done in the past. I recall Jerry 'Butler was on staff for a while.....I think that was also a front office job, but he is long gone, haven't heard his name in a while.

I am a real old timer, used to watch Jim Brown on Sundays on a B&W TV at my grandmothers house. So, I have seen him, as well as Barry in person at the Ralph. And CJ numberout times. The backs are all GREAT, but run a spectrum. Brown was the best balance of speed and power I ever saw, not moves of a BArry or CJ, But, he was a load up the gut and could also get around the end. Brown retired after 8 years, on top of his game.(actually, so did Barry) Barry was more shifty, had that great jump sideways to make guys miss, but more a speed and moves guy than Brown. CJ leans toward being a moves guy first...likely the fastest of the three in terms of acceleration. But, both Brown and Sanders had great seasons, many years in a row. CJ hasn't done that yet, but he may...we will see. For my money, in todays NFL, Barry is probabily the pick over Brown...different era guys. CJ may get there, but hasn't done the many years yet.

Who isn't playing at 100%
bigK14094 replied to Logical Reasoning's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
These efforts the last couple of weeks remind me of the arrival of Chuck Knox in Buffalo. The Bills players, the prior season, basically quit at the end of the season. The fans (us and our predecessors) coined a term. "Run for the bus football" That is, get the game over and get out of town (with the game check) And, don't get hurt doing it! When Knox arrived, he said he had never heard that term until he got to Buffalo, but after reviewing the game films, he understood the term. Well folks, the Bills are once again playing "Run for the bus football" (Takes an old timer to remember that phrase) Sorry to see a reinfection of that disease.
