the problem is that refs often use cheats to call penalties as opposed to actually seeing the penalty.
The cheat there on the hold is when a defender looks like he is being turned. the ref didn’t see a hold but automatically infers a hold there— even though a guy can also get turned on a pancake block.

to your point, we literally lost the same way to the broncos in 2007 than we did this past week. They sprinted on the field with no timeouts to kick a miraculous FG in that game too.
