Yeah, his athleticism probably helps a lot. But even the greatest athletes struggle with golf, given how counter intuitive and highly mechanical it is. I think Poyer probably has an elite “sports IQ” more than anything.
I had the good fortune of playing golf with a lot of NFL Players at charity events over the years. I think the athleticism only gets you so far. Some of these guys play many times per week (the retired ones), and they are 20 handicappers, at best, and hitting your bad slices and worm burners, etc.
