Re-thinking the hiring of color commentators
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to Miyagi-Do Karate's topic in The Stadium Wall
i guess my point is that the interview pool universe needs to be expanded. There are some content creators that may not be dynamic speakers, but I know for sure there are others that are— because I listen to them. And there are lots and lots of former players that don’t provide any insight and/or are terrible speakers. it would be nice if the networks at least opened up the pool to some of these film guys. It might be a nice of change if each network had a guy like this on their roster of otherwise former player types. -
Re-thinking the hiring of color commentators
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to Miyagi-Do Karate's topic in The Stadium Wall
It is true that they can take you “inside the huddle,” but they don’t. They have 3-5 basic talking points usually. Go back and listen to Sanchez from last Sunday. He added literally nothing to the broadcast by way of content. For example, did he ever once explain the coverages that were being run by either team? -
Re-thinking the hiring of color commentators

Interesting take. Not saying I disagree with you, but I wonder if football ratings are through the roof in spite of the low quality of the analysis. I think it is rare when I have heard anyone think highly of a color commentator (Romo? Anyone else?). -
Re-thinking the hiring of color commentators
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to Miyagi-Do Karate's topic in The Stadium Wall
The other idea I had floated for a while is that for every game, the booth adds a local beat writer of the home team as the third person on the broadcast. That would Add somebody who actually had some substantive knowledge of the home team. -
Week 18: Jets at Bills - a W wins the AFC East!
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
Happened a few weeks ago, and it was a great pickup. He is good insurance. And he is almost identical in every way to Haack statistically. -
I think we can all agree that there are a lot of terrible football (and really sports) color commentators out there. I believe the NFL needs to change its hiring model. i think there was this belief that hiring former players and coaches as commentators would cause fans to like them or watch them more because of their popularity. I don’t think that assumption is right. I don’t know anyone who likes a commentator or his work just because he was liked or known as a player. There are now so many really brilliant content creators out there (media, podcasts, YouTube) who dissect film endlessly and would provide so much better and more astute analysis than the likes of Tiki Barber or Adam Archuletta Or Troy Ailman, or Brian Griese, or Mark Sanchez, etc. I would like to see the NFL shift away from the hiring of recently retired players and instead look at some of these “film nerds” as possible hires. As average football fans are getting smarter and more into the X’s and O’s, the current model of having former players trot out a bunch of vapid talking points is not working. Any thoughts?

Video analysis: How the Falcons shut down Dawson Knox
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to HOUSE's topic in The Stadium Wall
That was exactly JA’s mindset. There were a lot more of those plays where Knox was just floating out there for an easy 5 yards and Josh ignored him. It was noticeable in real time all day. While I think the Falcons did some things to try to limit knox, I don’t think that was why he had a quiet game. Josh just didn’t feel like throwing it short a lot. I also think the combination of the Falcons doing some tricky things in coverage and the oline protecting Josh well caused him to basically avoid the checkdowns. He looked all around downfield for a while and if he couldn’t find someone, then he would run. -
Jerry Hughes’ Last Regular Season Home Game?
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall
Pretty amazing to see him mature. When he first got here, he would commit like at least 2-3 super dumb penalties per game. Was a bit of a hot head. Seems like he really matured and became a true process guy. BTW, i saw Kelvin Sheppard the other day on TV— he is an assistant coach for the Lions. -

How about these moves? One of my favorite Hughes moments. Broncos/Bills 2020 TD return: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gBnCP1r7Y04 -
Week 18: Jets at Bills - a W wins the AFC East!
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
Their D line is good. Quinnen Williams is better than any DT we have on our team. I think Saleh even has said it is the best D-line he has ever coached— high praise, considering who he had in San Fran. i don’t know all the jets problems, but given the talent they have in their front 7 really on D, seems weird they get gashed on the ground. I will be curious to see how we do against them running the ball. -

jets are a weird team to figure out. They are elite on the D-line, yet still seem to get gashed in the run game. -

you get no real weather advantage against opponents unless you practice some in the bad weather. -
Bill O’Brien interviewing for Jags HC
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
I feel bad for the jags. I was just reading up on this Shad Khan, and I think he is a cool story— came from nothing and is a self-made billionaire based on basically an automotive parts business (bumpers). so, now I am sort of rooting for the jags to get things on track. -

that is just rude, man. Only 30% of my posts concern the weather. (The other 65% concern building a dome. And that leaves the mandatory 5% quota devoted to Antonio Williams). -

Miyagi-Do Karate replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
I hate to be a Debby downer, but the weather (esp wind) is making this game look like a total crap shoot. I would expect some sort of 10-6 score type of weather game, with neither team doing much and a few bad miscues deciding who scores and wins. But I guess this is a “real football.” -
Interesting. It sounds like they wanted the Athletic less for the content and more for its customers’ info.

Weather is looking bad again during game time. Wind gusts in excess of 30 MPH. -
Week 18: Jets at Bills - a W wins the AFC East!
Miyagi-Do Karate replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agreed. People forget how flukey that game was, and how it got away from us. Even Wentz’s miracle sack escape was a game changing play. I think it would be a lot different game if we played them again. Taylor always gets his yards, but I have faith that we can contain him better the second time around. -
He looks good in practice. But just wait until the games start….

Lee Smith and Dawson Knox mic’d up for Bills vs Falcons

I watched that and all I could think was: “build a dome.” 😃 “The love you” stuff was great.
