Where I live, the bike path (or ‘multi-use path’) is full of pedestrians, little kids on bikes, etc., so I always wonder why the spandex mafia groups who are riding $4000 bikes and wearing matching racing outfits don’t have somewhere more interesting or challenging to ride.

You're just missing how big a cultural icon he was but more broadly how icons were viewed in his era vs today. For example, no boxer will ever be bigger than Ali, regardless of record. You're also missing Namath's impact on the league, which might be greater than any other player ever. Certainly in the top handful. Personally, I prefer it remain a 'Hall of Fame' and not a 'Hall of Football Statistics'.

This is the complete answer to the OP's question. Not only can't you tell the story of the NFL without Namath, he's one of the first five players you have to mention on the list. Do people think they'll still be talking about Mahomes in in the year 2070? I doubt it.

I hadn't picked up an SI in close to 20 years, but my BIL in England subscribes and for some reason his issues started coming to our house a few months ago. I was astounded at how poorly written and presented this magazine is now. It's the same lazy, low-IQ, low-attention span, over-hyped nonsense that you get on cable TV news or sports programs or internet blogs. Sad.
