Personnel evaluation in the NFL is hard because there are humans involved ? The on field performance is a significant part of the equation, but just part of the equation and maybe not even the majority of the evaluation. When the trade happened -- the pundits were saying the Steelers got ripped, now the same pundits are likely saying the Steelers are geniuses...

Beane's definitely not hiding much with Vic in his assessment of Josh's progress. Its got to be a little maddening as the person who staked his reputation in large part on Josh to see Josh progress -- like the Carolina game and then see Josh make some really questionable decisions 6 days later in Detroit. It was a step back in what had been a steady progression. I didn't read Beane's answer to the Josh question as coddling Josh or protecting him from pressure--I kind of read the opposite. Josh hasn't done enough yet in Beane's eyes to win a totally "clean" opinion. He still has to earn that. Everyone will have a point of view on this if you dissect the comments...maybe Vic wrote it that way on purpose.

The Bills don't have anyone with the reputation of an explosive playmaker on O. No recent draft pick or free agent has that. However, the Bills have a lot of guys who can stretch the field: Brown, Foster, Roberts, McKenzie; who can get tough yards-Gore, Singletary; who can move the sticks-Beasley -- and a lot of potential at TE with Sweeney, Knox and Kroft. The Bills have built of deep Offense from the line to the skill positions. I believe the Bills also have an Offensive Coaching staff who can use these parts to their max potential. I think the Offense has great potential to go from an offense that averaged under 300 yards a game last year to an offense that averages over 370 or so yards a game -- so move from 30th to 15th or so with Josh just playing at a level where he played the last 5 games of last year. The Bills have improved that much. The problem with having one or two key playmakers is that injuries wreak havoc with a season...I think building the kind of depth the Bills have started to build on O and then adding a playmaker or two through the draft makes more sense.

I sincerely believe Flores will coach hard; he has a decent staff. Good experience at a lot of the position coaches and Jim Caldwell as a mentor to Flores. They will get the most out of the talent they have. However, the overall vision for the team is to give Flores and the staff a roster that cannot win many games and that's just facts. It doesn't mean he and the staff stop coaching but the talent he has been given cannot compete. If that's what Flores means by saying he won't tank. I take it at face value. If they get 5-6 wins from this team, Flores and his staff can take satisfaction that they did a helluva job. Stephen Ross won't appreciate it, but they should be proud. Bills fans should be really positive about our current situation. In 2017, the coaching staff was able to get pretty much max performance from the talent they had. In 2018, the Bills went from Peterman, to a Rookie, to Peterman, to Derek Anderson, to Matt Barkley and then back to the Rook. Folks worry about the blowout losses, but the only blowout losses that Josh started were SD (first start) and Green Bay. All the other games were impossible QB situations. Beane didn't hide the fact that the Bills were undermanned last year. He took responsibility for mistakes and took heat off the coaching staff. If Chris Grier and Brian Flores are on the same page --I expect the Dolphins will do the same. The wild card is their fricking crazy, itchy trigger finger owner.
