Henry for Seth McKinney and their 3rd rounder.....there is not much cap implication on either side. McKinney did a good job at C this year and can play G as well. He fits the nasty Tucker, Chris V mode you want in an interior OL.

So what is the minimum you would accept for Travis....I think the minimum is a first day pick this year. The underclass declarations will make this an okay draft --I would like to have three picks on the first day. So I say a third round '05 minimum.

You need to reread this thread that was my only point of reference--I usually don't take notes on other threads...some on this board advocate that the only way to develop JP is throw him into the starter's role and that is the only way he will develop. I can't speak for AD's intent in his orginial post or his reply but I can tell you that my only meaning was that this is not the sole way to develop a QB and that a lot young QB's sans Big Ben and Harrington as you correctly point out during his first two years--tend to take a beating. David Carr is a good but very extreme example of this. He has never QB'd a team to a winning record. Jax and Carolina were both playoff teams by their third year in the league...and Neither Mark Brunnell or Kerry Collins got sacked 75 times their first year...David Carr still has happy feet in the pocket...so different guys develop in different ways...I leave to our staff to figure out the best way to develop JP--not the unpaid QB coaches on this board...

Sure, I'll defend it--Sacks aren't the only indication of how many times a QB gets hit the last I checked ajzepp, its just how many hits he takes when he happens to possess the ball-in Harrington's case he took 36 sacks this year...plus if you watched the Indy game on thanksgiving he was a ragdoll when he was in there--Drew took 37 sacks--not a lot of difference...-plus AD's original comment was that throwing a young highly drafted QB in there early may not be the sole way of developing his talent. I was agreeing with that assessment. Do you think Eli Manning starts the year next year with a conviction that: 1) He has players around him who can help him win? 2) He has experienced great success against all types of NFL defenses? Its really nice to say that true development only comes from facing live fire--but is that really the case...if so defend it...

This issue has been discussed ad naseum but I don't think polled recently...what do we do with the LT situation. Continuity is a big contributor to increased productivity on the OL. I try my best to get Jonas to sign a top 10 contract for LT's instead of a top 5 contract--that still means something like: 6 years, $12 Million multi-tiered bonus, $30 million total contract value. With salary escalations something like: year 1: $10 M SB, $1 M salary, year 2: $1 M roster bonus, $2 M salary, year 3 $1 M roster bonus, $3 M salary, year 4 $1 M roster bonus, $3 Million salary; Year 5 $4 Million Salary; Year 6 $5 Million Salary....This is about 15% below the contract signed by John Tait last year--and a reasonable figure for Jonas given his normal 14 game seasons. I also try to give Marcus price a bit of a bump--probably 3 years, $6 Million, $2M bonus and salaries of $750K (Vet min); $1.25M, 2M in each year. First year cap hits are Jennings: $2.7 Million, Price $1.5 Million--reasonable given our cap space....

Right wing nut jobs (JP supporters) and left wing sympathizers (Bledsoe lovers) listen up...let's establish two things: 1) Experience in the NFL, particularly 12 years experience at the QB position, does make one more prepared to handle the position than a season on the active roster, half of which was spent rehabbing from an injury. 2) Young JP is very talented -- he has more athletic skills than #11 at this point in Drew's career (arguably than Drew ever had) but in the words of Yogi Berra--this position in 50 percent mental, 50 percent physical and 50 percent other things..... JP has to win the job in camp--on the field...we can stoke our keys all we want--nothing changes this fact....

Has anyone ever thrown for 500 or 600 or 700 in a playoff game??? One drive in the second half and then start watching film of the Pats secondary without the Ty's (Poole and Law).

A couple of thoughts on this: 1) Sam Wyche and Tom Clements made great progress with Drew this year. Except against the defenses that could take advantage or could scheme with their talent to exploit Drew's weaknesses (re: Steelers, Patriots, Jets with Abraham) Drew showed more pocket awareness. Also Evans and McGahee's presence had a lot to do with this. Wyche and Clements have shown they can improve a QB's skill in short period of time. I agree with the perspective that if under the close watch of Wyche and Clements, JP spends the off-season working his arse off in the film room and on the field--that he can win the job in camp...but it won't be until the end of camp. This would be the best scenario of all--because if JP wins the job 4 or 5 games into the season--it means we are probably playing less than .500 ball at the time and again putting ourselves in a hole for a playoff run. What does JP concentrate on? a) Reads, reads and more reads--he needs to look at every Defense he can in every situation particularly focusing on the AFC east and the upper tier of AFC teams and plot out exactly what he sees and what he would do if the D shows this look. b) His mechanics--he is very unorthodox with his footwork in the pocket..throwing off his back foot--crossing his legs alot in his drops---letting the ball drop from the throwing position some--drill, drill and more drill. Play fake work is also necessary. Alot of the bad mechanics developed his senior at Tulane when he was under siege...but keep in mind he also led his team to a pretty good record that year all things considered (5-7) c) Planned roll outs--he will be very effective on these and this is a way to take advantage of his speed and strong arm--mechanics are less important here. This adds a whole new tab to the playbook....probably 3 or 4 times the number of roll out plays that we ran this year--up from 2 a game to 8 to 10. Lots of other things--but these are the main ones I saw from watching the pre-season games where he got his most work. He can gain familiarity in the film room--alot of his work need is mental not physical. 2) As to the draft choice--I kind of agree with Ramius's logic, although I am not as vehement as him---and we are all kind of saying the same thing..we gave up a second and a fifth round choice in '04 to make our '05 first round choice in '04. So the JP pick literally cost us a second and a fifth..That is a high price--but not an unreasonable one. QB depth last year was 4 first rounders--I don't see that depth this year. Was it worth it....well--we won't know that answer until this is Mr. Losman's team my friends....
