I think it's probably the fear of another Tampa 2 defensive minded coach coming in. Garrett has years of solid offensive production in Dallas - all despite having Romo at QB. Again, there's a reason he's the highest paid assistant coach in the NFL.
-
Yeah I remember they promoted him to AHC with some fat raise when he was THE hot coordinator. It actually might be really difficult to get him out of Dallas. Here's the article from 2008: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3200822
-
Funny that everyone was hoping Dallas would win to end the job for Cowher - but maybe we need them to lose to try and get Garrett. Garrett's stock a few years ago was so high we'd also have been laughed at for pursuing him. Perhaps now is the time.
-
And who from that group? If we assume it's really not going to be Cowher, I don't know that I've heard much a consensus from Bills fans on who they'd pick next. There seem to be just as many pro Billick fans as those against him...same with Frazier.
-
Who is it everyone would like to wait for that is currently in the playoffs? Grimm? Rivera? Garrett? They did the right thing to wait for Marvin Lewis years ago (of course still blew that) but I'm not sure this year there is as clear cut a star coordinator to wait for. Honest question - who from the playoff field would you like to see the Bills interview? If that's the route the Bills go, I actually wouldn't mind Frazier.

Calling it just a repeat would be generous. Funny that someone put that video together when he's basically a legit source. -

Do a search for Cowher: http://search.twitter.com/ A couple random nobodys are spreading a Cowher to Buffalo for 8.5MM/year rumor in the last few hours. Any rumors coming out of Buffalo? -

The NFL product as a whole- where do you rank it?
disco replied to LongLiveRalph's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great post and I agree with many of your points. Here's another angle: I'm a Bills fan in DC and a Washington Capitals season ticket holder. Hockey has been interesting to watch because they've needed to do more to try and connect to fans. They've lowered ticket prices. Players are friendly and accessible. They let you watch games online, on sat, on cable - everywhere; and the package is a 3rd the cost of the NFL package. The NHL found itself in a position where it needed to do more to attract fans. And, well, they have - and I think are a much better league for it. The NFL on the other hand, needs to do very little to attract fans - and I think it's beginning to show. Sure it's a great product, but I also feel like it's an overpriced distant corporate entity. In DC, I think kids growing up going to Capitals games right now get to walk away with the feeling that they really are a part of the system. I don't believe kids going to Redskin games feel that same immersion in the team. If they can even get there - many will only experience Caps game due to pricing. And I think this can change the root loyalties of younger fans in the years to come. Sure kids will continue to like the NFL, but the opportunity for other leagues to steal fans is very high. -
What college teams could beat the 09 Bills

The Bills have a decent chance of getting a proven coach
disco replied to Doc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm predicting Herm Edwards. He's at the right price, has a successful year of coaching in his past, has recently failed with his second team...plus he knows the AFC East. -
Right, but even as a marketing guy and caring mostly about season ticket sales - he's now seeing that value collapse and he's going to have to address it.

well Mike Williams is close to bucking the trend. Which oddly annoys me. -

No Kelly being on the sidelines was related to him still being interested in the organization...which we all know. I get your fixation on 'Letting the 90's Go', you've expressed that multiple times already. My question was pretty simple...has he commented on whether he'd be interested? I've already given you reasons why he might work in this role - if AVP wasn't fit to be the QB coach before, trying to do the same task also as the OC makes it that much more ridiculous. Also, you're wrong if you think other teams don't bring back former playesr. Ever heard of Joe Gibbs? How about Dan Marnio? (and they agreed to let him be GM) We're talking about the most successful no-huddle QB in history helping out a team that's suddenly stretched a under qualified QB coach into an OC. Could he help? Yeah. Is he interested? Anybody know?
-
Yeah, I'm not suggesting the guy comes back as an OC or Head Coach..but isn't QB coach about the level of coaching that he could provide without putting himself through the grind you are describing above? I'd also not think it was plausible if I didn't see Kelly running around the sidelines a few games a year. We're also not talking about taking a great QB and trying to form him into something he wasn't...we're talking about providing coaching for the type of system he happens to have a specific knowledge of. Also, this isn't remotely the same as bringing back a guy of Marv's age to the strenuous and pivotal role as GM. We're talking about a QB coach...that is currently occupied by AVP.... That's why I'm wondering has it been confirmed that he's not interested as you also suggest?
-
I'm sure this has been answered a million times, but what is Jim Kelly's position on this? With AVP going to OC, wouldn't it make sense to try and have Kelly serve as the QB coach? I mean really, if they're going to run no-huddle is there any other guy that could provide better mentoring for Trent?

[closed]PFT: Bus Cook's Buffalo Trip Raises Eyebrows
disco replied to coastalpika's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, this is only a result of the attempt to trade Cutler for Cassel blowing up in their face. To be honest, I don't even know why they even got into that discussion. They're in a situation though where Cutler is demanding a trade, their owner has acknowledged they might lose 'their star qb', and it's apparent the new coach isn't 100% on Cutler (as evident by the Cassel trade). So I think the advantage of Edwards is more resolving their disgruntled QB situation than anything. -

I think a Cutler trade is more plausible than people might think. Denver can not trade Cutler without getting a starting QB in his place. Cutler has not shown enough to interest teams that already have a solid proven starter. This in mind, teams that might be interested at QB: Bears, Lions, Vikings, Titans, Bucs, Eagles(stretch), 49ers, Raiders, Rams, Bills. Of that list, only the following teams have a QB that Broncos could even consider starting: Eagles, Raiders, Rams, Bills. McNabb seems like an unlikely trade. I doubt the Raiders would really consider giving up Russell. Marc Bulger is a possible option. However, the QB that would best match is probably Trent Edwards. We know for a fact that Denver was interested in Matt Cassel - and really, Edwards is a similar QB. If I'm Denver, I think you can get away with trading for Edwards without worrying that you're throwing away your next season. If you're Buffalo, I don't know that Edwards has done enough to make him untradable. I'm an Edwards fan so I'm not exactly looking to trade him, I just think it seems like a workable trade. I think Cutler has a bigger arm for TO/Evans...however I also think his personality is such that he's more likely to cause an issue with TO than Edwards. Just something to think about when you look at it from Denver's point of view. If they're looking to trade Cutler, I don't know how many other teams are as attractive trade partners as Buffalo. -
TBN: Bills / Peters ~$3 M apart - Peters wants over $11.5 M
disco replied to SKOOBY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's got years left on his deal. I'm fine keeping him on for another year to find out if he's got the ability to play a full season at a high level. I don't see a guy who's best effort was warming our bench last year suddenly becoming our highest paid player. -

Not getting consistency and what happened last year are two very different things. You also mean when he's in shape, when he's healthy, and when he feels like playing. It's been a few years since we've seen him meet all 3 of those conditions. I don't want another Mike Williams situation. -

Remind me again what our record was before he came back last year...and the record after he returned. All he showed us for sure last year is his inclusion on the line did not help create W's. What happens when we sink $11m into him and he continues to play as he does last year? How is NOW the time to agree to pay him as a Top 3 LT? How is having a deal with 3 years left on it a good time to hold out? How is coming back to play football out of shape a good idea? How is giving up the most sacks in the league a good intro to 'I want a $7m raise?' I just don't believe in paying a guy with those kind of questions that kind of money. I'd be more interested in paying Greer the $4m/year he got from NO.
