In the Land of the Blind the One-Eyed Man is King
The Dean replied to The Dean's topic in Off the Wall Archives
So a single One-Eyed Man can dispense with an entire population of blind people? I think that's the kind of arrogance that will contribute to the demise of the One-Eyed Man. -

Regarding the stoning you are likely correct. "Pummeled to death" is more likely. Although, if you have enough blind men throwing stones, who knows what can happen? Of course, you don't have to throw the stones to stone someone to death. You can pummel them with the stones in your hand. But I digress... As for Doc's take, OK I will concede that angle. But this Land of the Blind isn't really a subset of the Land, it's the whole Land, AKA World/Universe/Etc. A One-Eyed Man, in this scenario is the aberration who is born with a sense the others cannot even fathom. -

A Land of People Who Went Blind? Seriously... -
In the Land of the Blind the One-Eyed Man is King Sure, this saying seems appropriate for the everyday experiences many of us have. Just today I was in a group of uber Luddites and I was regaled for being able to program contacts to a cell phone. (Yes it was that bad.) I deflected the accolades by repeating the well known saying, "In the Land of the Blind the One-Eyed Man is King!". Certainly there are those among us who have been in that position ("I know a little about this. But compared to these people, I am a freaking genius!"). Anyway, earlier today it occurred to me right after I spoke those fated words ("In the Land of the Blind the One-Eyed Man is King.") that they were likely complete bull ****. I mean, think about it. In the "Land of the Blind" the One-Eyed Man would be a freak, at best. Once he started babbling about "colors" and such, he probably would be locked up in an insane asylum. Suppose the One-Eyed Man was born to the Royal Family. Do you really think they would talk about this character in public? Please. I guess the One-Eyed Man could attempt to show he had a special sense by observing objects before his Blind companions discovered them. But I'm sure some Blind Amazing Randi would point out that he was there earlier and knew the objects were there. Or perhaps he conspired with another Blind man who was there with them and let him know what was ahead. I mean, they're blind. How would they know if he was cheating? Anyway, I suppose it is possible "In the Land of the Blind the One-Eyed Man is King". But I think it is far more likely "In the Land of the Blind the One-Eyed Man is Stoned to Death".

Question about tipping at restaurants.....
The Dean replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Since I prefer my bags arrive at my destination the same time I arrive, I usually tip a skycap far more than $1 per bag. A couple of the others seemed a little chintzy, too. This seems like a bare minimum guide for Cincy. -

Wow, I missed that. I just noticed the Molson. The Coor's Light is a HUGE violation, IMO. (Yes, I know they are owned by the same company.) -

I didn't notice this when I posted (several minutes later). Sorry if it looked like I plagiarized. But great minds think alike. And apparently, on this topic, so do ours. -

Like after the game, for example? I believe the fans were already gone and it is a Canadian venue. I can't think of a better, or more appropriate, time and place. -

How does a chimp "pick up" these habits in a zoo? I think they mean, "We got this monkey trashed on beer and gave him smokes because we thought it was funny. Now he's a pain in the ass for us to handle, so it's off to rehab for him." -
Are you inferring all Chinese made tires are bad, based on this comment? Just curious.

Top 5 Rock Guitar Solos Of All Time

I'm a huge Chet Atkins fan. And his followers are some of the best pickers in the biz: Chet and Mark O'Connor: http://www.youtube.com/watch#playnext=1&am...p;v=absuj8MRTYw Chet and Tony Rice (with some other all time greats including David Grisman on mando, Bela Fleck on banjo, Rob Wasserman on bass and Mark O'Connor on fiddle): http://www.youtube.com/watch#playnext=1&am...p;v=YrNS54hBTdo -
IMO, Dunn Tire in WNY is terrific. Good prices and great service/treatment, in my experience. Dunno how far south they operate, though.

I get my hair cut from the owner, too and I also give a $5 tip. -
America's Tuque. But shouldn't that be USA's Tuque?

Unless the hairdresser owns the shop, they are paid very little per cut. They rely on tips simply to survive, in many cases. Me, too. In fact I'd say 20-25% of my customers give me more money than I ask for. They don't call it a "tip", they just say the service was worth more than I charge. Many of my customers give me homemade cookies, cakes, pasta, etc. Everybody loves to feed a fat guy. Bartenders and waitresses are regularly paid under minimum wage in the USA. The tips compensate for that. In many (most?) local joints the bartenders are given a small flat wager (I know some get as little as $30 a night for pay). Then it is up to you, really. I tip, but I lived on tips for years. But if you go to a salon and the owner charges $40 for a cut, I don't think you need to tip him/her. Tipping will usually get you better treatment on return visits, though. First of all, I have NEVER heard cooks/waiters/bartenders/etc make fun of a good tipper for being a good tipper. NEVER. And I have worked in a lot of places. Now, if you are throwing money around trying to impress the bartender or pick up the waitress there may be jokes, but not for the normal customer. In Germany the prices are "inclusive" because they actually pay their help a living wage. We don't do that in the USA. Maybe we should pay servers a decent wage. Then the price of everything you consume at a bar or restaurant would cost far more than it does now. And as I now know you are a skin-flint, you have lost your chair at my bar! As to what a bartender makes, it varies widely. At a high end joint with class customers (not Cincy), you can do quite well. At a dive bar you can starve, especially in a bad economy. When I bartended at the Seneca Niagara Casino, I started on the day shift. There were weekdays in the winter when you could make $10 in tips for the whole day (and I was usually among the higher tipped bartenders). Remember we were paid under minimum wage so they actually had to tax us on far more tips than that. To be fair, on a good night shift you could go home with a few hundred on occasion and I'm guessing not many declared all of that. Of course, when you leave with a pocketful of money on the night shift, and you work with 20-something cocktail waitresses, you often find yourself broke (but happy) in the morning. Such is the life of a bartender. -
I agree it is overkill, Lori. I just don't think it is a free speech issue, nor a PC issue.

Agreed. If the person is truly whacked, they shouldn't go to prison. They should be treated until they are no longer completely mentally defective. Then they should serve out the rest of their term in prison (or whatever the punishment would have been). I might be able to accept a reduced sentence, under very specific conditions, but not total absolution.
