  1. So will I get a refund on my airline tickets?  Car rental?  Hotel room?  Football tickets?

Not trying to be an ass, but vacations cost a LOT of money, so why should someone who had a trip planned be left holding the bag?

The simple answer is, "Of course you let the homeless stay in the hotel," but there's more than just hotel rooms involved in this instance.

I would hope that these entities would take this in mind. It was pointed out on the Today Show that this event is being taken into consideration with air, car, and hotel. Can't say about game tickets.

  2. So what should the people who fly/drive down there to see the game do?  Should they be the homeless ones?

It's a tough situation, but the people from out of town are just as homeless as those who fled the hurricane.

That is why I am suggesting that the schools think about postponing the game to a later date. And, if they don't, that the people coming in from out of town have some civility and re-look at accomodations. Or, going at all.

Think about if it was you in that hotel room with no house.

  3. ** Mods - feel free to move if you think it is best. **

I just thought that I would post my view on current opinions concerning NO, AL, MS post-Katrina with respect to my experiences with Fran and Floyd when I lived in NC. I want to share what I went through as a first responder volunteer (search and rescue / rebuilding) during this time.

Fran and Floyd occurred on consecutive years in NC. Just as eastern NC was putting some pieces together from Fran, Floyd came around. This double whammy broke many backs in NC. Now granted, that area (NC) does not have the port commerce like NO and area does, but it does have an equal amount of agriculture and tourism as LA, AL, and MS, as well as I feel the same level of "income".

It took the eastern side (east of 95) of NC many years to recover in all aspects. Infrastructure was the hardest hit. From a public and business point of view. Many farmers lost everything. Small businesses were down for years. People lived in temporary housing (trailers and mobile homes) for years. Electricity took months to get back on-line. These two events are one reason why NC is having such a financial problem now. LA, MS, and AL are only seeing the very tip of the iceberg.

From an environmental aspect, think about what is floating in that water right now. Chemicals, fuel, trash, dead animals, building materials, sewage, etc. Plus, it will be in the 90's with high humidity.

Look at the pictures of the water in the NO area. It is right up to the eaves. Most likely these homes will have to be torn down completely. To the ground and re-built. Think about that.

The football team can just about think that they will not play in the Superdome this year. With the roof torn apart and the use of the stadium as a temporary "home" and the situation with the surrounding neighborhoods, there is just no way that this should be considered. Think about what would/should happen if another storm comes this way. I have no problem with the mayor and gov declaring martial law and imposing a curfew to prevent issues. The problem is getting around.

The effects of this storm, positive and negative, will be felt for a very long time (years). When someone said that this is our tsunami, believe it.

  4. Oh, you will be fine. Plus, once inside the stadium there are no beer sales so it limits the idiots. You might get a few Miami sucks thrown at you but nothing more than that. As long as the M on your hat is red and white and not maize and blue you will be fine. I have a lot of friends I went to high school with that go to Miami that are coming up. The game should be a lot of fun. Yeah, you will be at the top of the south stands...I think. There isn't really a bad seat, unless you get a pole in B deck, but you will be fine.

Don't forget to account for the booze transported into the stadium "undercover". Went to the NC State game 2 yrs ago and saw 2 pints of Jack brought in and emptied by halftime.

  5. sounds like he is well on his way to one day becoming some bad man's boyfriend.  It might just be what he needs... a couple yrs. in a state pen.

kids usually don't come with a set of instructions.  you raise em the best you know how, set a good example for them, kick their arses when they need it, and hope it's enough.

Some just turn out rotten to the core, others turn out sweet as grandma's apple pie.  If a light doesn't go on in his head soon, it probably ain't gonna happen.

    Bingo!! We have a winner.

  6. The USGA and the course is watering the greens during the evening and periodically during the day as conditions dictate. D Fey of the USGA even came out and said so.

Classic course - must hit the proper shot to the proper spot - good test of the entire golf game. I get tired of what I call "bomb and drop" golf.

  7. There is another option. My wife bad seasonal allergies and OTC drugs were not making it. A few years ago she did the shots 3X per week and had pretty good success.

This year she investigated a holistic approach to her allergies. This was a "yeast diet" (yeast elimination). It can be done 15 days with supplements or 30 without. Real good success. She gets a little stuffy only if the humidity is high.

    Might be something to explore.

  8. Mine sucks becuase I am currently out of work. "Reduction in force", more like re-allocate responsibility to Asia.

I liked what I did, liked the people, liked the challenges. Now, I'm searching for an employer that wants a mid-40 year old with 20 years experience.

  9. 1) Why did you move out of Buffalo?

Left Buffalo after graduating from RIT in 1984. Lack of tech jobs in the area.

    2) Where did you go?

Went to work for Texas Instruments in Texas.

    3) How does your new home compare to Buffalo?

Currently live in Columbus OH. Couldn't find anything comparable unless I was in E Auroura or OP. Nuf said.

    4) If the econonmy and job market were stable would you move back?

Doubt it. Weather in Columbus has its cold spells, but for not as long.

    5) What suggestions to you have to improve the quality of life here?

Reduce the financial burden (taxes) the rest of the state has to take on to support big brother down state. Nuf said.

  10. If you can, catch the story about C Dobler on ESPN. Emphasis on story is about his wife, who broke her neck and damaged her spinal cord. Paralyzed from the neck down. This has taken a lot out of Conrad financially, emotionally, etc. Daughter got accepted to USC, but CD can't afford to have her go there (will go to Miami of OH in fall). Med bills are approx $750K to date.

  11. Different times and different situations between the two teams. The Bills did not have to contend with free agency like now. The players were pretty consistent from year to year. Many of the Bills players "moved up the ladder" together. Teams today are pieced together and hope that they can make a run and stay away from injury. When the Bills had an injury there was a really good player behind him to backfill.

In general, I look back at those teams with fondness and admiration knowing that that kind of run will not happen again.
