Playoff Solutions Assuming they don’t replay the Bengals game.
What a Tuel replied to Locomark's topic in The Stadium Wall
As opposed to eliminating teams from the playoffs or ceding the Chiefs the #1 seed by default? Who cares. Sometimes too much time off is a disadvantage. It is the least bad solution. I don't know why people are getting pissy about bye weeks but ceding the bye week to the Chiefs... -

Yes you may have caught McDaniels praising the team for taking it out to focus more on the game, but it was actually gone because Tyreek Hill was getting them a better custom Dolphins one 😂 -

No one is speaking definitively about the teams outcomes but you though. So while people respond to you disagreeing that isn't the same as your prognostications that we would lose badly. You just don't know. We started out very poorly against the Ravens too. We were blowing out the Vikings late 3rd quarter. Anything can happen in an NFL game. -

To their credit, the Ravens fans on their forum are relatively calm about this possibility. Not sure if they would be different if Lamar was playing this weekend or if they happen to pull off the upset against the Bengals. -

Its not that big of deal but shaft a team that has nothing to do with this from 1) a chance to win their division and 2) home field advantage for the playoffs. Sure not that big of a deal haha. In the mean time a team getting an extra week of rest before playing a playoff game is off limits because it is such a big deal. I mean....come on. We are going in circles. The NFL doesn't actually lose a ton moving wildcard weekend games back a week. The rest of the playoffs (besides SB which wouldn't be moved) no one has any idea where they would be played so how much planning could they have done? Screw wild card weekend plans and do this right instead of makeshift altering seeding rules and drawing numbers. -

If that is a large issue then swap the bengals vs bills and week 18 games. Bengals play Bills this weekend and week 18 games move to next week. I don't think an extra week is that big of a deal as far as disadvantages go. No bigger of a deal than awarding a bye week with a competitive advantage based on a random number generator or a sudden change in the seeding rules. -

I don't understand this. I mean I understand the emotional trauma, but are they going to refuse if we have to go back there for the playoffs too? If they are traumatized to the point they cannot face Paycor Stadium, then they should be discussing options to take the rest of the year off and get right mentally before playing again. Great idea that suits the Bills but Chiefs fans are probably saying wins matter more haha. -

This is where the NFL needs to step up and put their money where their mouth is and do it right instead of worrying about a few million more dollars. Easy for me to say sure, but I bet it earns some decent respect and loyalty from fans. A random number generator will fall flat with fans. -

Agree it can happen and the raiders were playing great against the best defense in the league (49ers) but then as illogical as football is, watch them just fall completely on their faces against the chiefs. For example, I lost my fantasy league because I benched Trevor Lawrence against the cowboys defense and he gets like 45 points, and then in another league I play Lawrence against the Texans and he gets 4 pts in a blowout. The NFL is just matchup chaos. -

Isn't there also a theory that the teams that rest their starters week 17 (or now week 18) and then also get a bye week end up returning a bit rusty for their first playoff game anyway? I'm not sure I'd want the Bills off 2 weeks but if people see it as an advantage then who cares. Its one team (AFC 1st seed) if it is done the way the twitter post above suggests. -

We've played on less practice. Nothing like this situation but to say practice is 100% necessary to even compete is a stretch given the teams circumstances for several weeks this season. League rules don't allow them to just modify playoff qualifying conditions on the fly. They actually say that if the game has impact on other teams then it must be played. There is much more going on than just the seeding for KC, Cinci, Buffalo. -

The problem is that a Bengals loss against the Ravens puts them at 11-5 and the Ravens at 11-6 technically giving the Bengals the division unless the Bills vs Bengals game resolves. Ravens will have beaten the Bengals twice, so a Bengals loss to the Bills and a tied 11-6 record would give the Ravens the division. -

Difference between unmoderated and moderated communities. Its also good to take a step back and realize that because I like to read opposing teams forums when we play them and chiefsplanet is so toxic it makes me hate their fans altogether. -

Sponsor activities? Like ad space? Honestly in my opinion this is where the NFL makes a bold statement that it is willing to take a few hits to get this done right. If a sponsor cancels or is unhappy they should show they will take care of that side without issue. If they just call Kelce for holding/OPI 37 times, no one would even be able to argue it was unfair. 😂 -

Buffalo would get a bye week 1-22-23 if they get #1 seed. Yes if the Chiefs get #1 seed they and NFC #1 seed would get 2 weeks. So what. It is so much less fair than #1 seed getting 1 week when every other seed gets none? Meh. Also what logistics? The NFL doesn't even know who is playing who yet, let alone who is traveling to what stadium. 1-15-23 - Formerly Wildcard Weekend - Instead its just Bills vs Bengals 1-22-23 - Formerly Divisional Weekend - Instead it is Wildcard Weekend 1-29-23 - Formerly Conference Championships - Instead its Divisional Weekend -

I don't think the reason for a coin flip should be because they can't revisit the field, it should only be to prevent scheduling changes or forcing the Bills/Bengals to play 2 games in 6 days right before playoffs. If they cant revisit the field again then they should just forfeit the season. It is very likely Bills/Bengals see each other in the playoffs, will they need to coin flip that one too? -
If both teams were scarred mentally then it wasn't doing right by the Bills, it was doing right as an organization no matter which team they belong to. If it were a Bengal player, I don't think we'd be having the conversation of taking a free win from the Bengals for being decent human beings and not telling them to forfeit or get back on the field.

Maybe. But at minimum after the week 18 games are played, 1st 2nd and 3rd seeds are up in the air. And If the Ravens beat the Bengals, their division is up in the air. Week 18: Bills 13-3 or 12-4 Chiefs 14-3 or 13-4 Bengals 12-4 or 11-5 Ravens 11-6 or 10-7 Too many combinations will still have competitive repercussions no matter the outcome.

True, I didn't consider the extra bye but Bills and Bengals barely played a game and although the circumstances are tragic, physically they are getting somewhat of a bye week right now. Not sure if that is inappropriate to say and am in no way making light of the situation for them. It is certainly worse for them than not having a bye. Mentally/Emotionally they are surely shredded. Not sure there is a way to avoid that unfortunately. Coin toss after Week 18 is an interesting idea... -
I posted the below in the other thread but after reading the rule, this appears to be the only reasonable solution that doesn't have the Bills playing 2 games in the next 6 days. 1-8-23 - Week 18 - Play normally 1-15-23 - Formerly Wildcard Weekend - Instead its just Bills vs Bengals 1-22-23 - Formerly Divisional Weekend - Instead it is Wildcard Weekend 1-29-23 - Formerly Conference Championships - Instead its Divisional Weekend 2-5-23 - Formerly Bye Week for SB Participants (Pro Bowl stuff) - Instead Conference Championships 2-12-23 - Super Bowl - Play normally Sure some plane and hotel reservations will get messed up but at most for what? Just Wildcard weekend? Playing field for Divisional round can only possibly be known for 1st seeds which is up in the air for both conferences anyway so that is the risk you take. Super Bowl remains the same. I just don't see how they don't replay this game but then the Bills happen to play the Bengals in the playoffs 2 weeks later maybe? And that they can do? Doesn't make sense. To summarize this method messes up some plane and hotel reservations but is fair for all involved teams. Its the only solution.

I've thought about it and this is my solution: 1-8-23 - Week 18 - Play normally 1-15-23 - Formerly Wildcard Weekend - Instead its just Bills vs Bengals 1-22-23 - Formerly Divisional Weekend - Instead it is Wildcard Weekend 1-29-23 - Formerly Conference Championships - Instead its Divisional Weekend 2-5-23 - Formerly Bye Week for SB Participants (Pro Bowl stuff) - Instead Conference Championships 2-12-23 - Super Bowl - Play normally Sure some plane and hotel reservations will get messed up but at most for what? How is it about the bills wanting to continue and not the bengals wanting to continue? It was a mutual decision. The only reason the Bills team should accept a forfeit is if the players do not want to play the game from that moment. -

Why are you so sure the Bengals players wanted to continue? Edit: To add if they didn't want to continue then how do you punish the Bills by not allowing them a chance to come back from a measly 4 pt deficit. -

Yeah they are starting to get over the "we are all one team" mentality and moving to "hey if both the bengals and bills didn't want to play then they both lose" mentality in record time. -

If thats the case and a win is impossible then I'd imagine the Bills would rather take the forfeit than no game played as it gives them the highest probability to still get the 1st seed.
