Greg, this time it's not. This was a cargo plane whose only use at this time was domestic training operations. All it was used for was parachute training. And it was decommissioned because it was deemed to no longer be safe.

It's a practice that has long been at issue for the crews that are tasked with manning the plane for it's final flight, who have asserted that these planes are dangerous, too dangerous to fly, and should simply be disassembled and shipped. In this instance they proved correct, as 5 national guardsmen died on this flight.

Logic and history would say that you're correct. However I am hopeful that we are living in changing times.
