Happy Independence day my fellow Americans

I had an old friend, passed about 15 years ago, who was a Brit and a Catholic priest. He did the Requiem for the Dead every 4th of July. -

Everyone please remember to verbally abuse an English person today. !@#$ the Queen!!! -
Thank you for sharing your story. You'll be in my prayers.

More like "all your mom's basement are belong to us".

They're thought crimes, Joe, and only Thurmal34 can detect them with his special racism decoder ring which allows him to discern bigotry in places, situations, and individuals where casual (read as "rational") observers sense only benign political differences.

Pre-empt it?!?!? I'm trying to start it. This is my "nerd rage voice", in case you couldn't tell.

I disagree. The show, for my money, was one of the best in the history of televised sci-fi, and was incredibly successful in it's post-airing sales.

I try to be patient, though I fail far too often for my own liking, because my faith demands it, and because the world requires it. The world I want to live in requires people to love one another, and to try to understand one another. To be empathetic, and tolerant. For this to happen, people capable of making strong arguments in favor of this sort of world have the responsibility to help guide others there, even when the road is difficult. I wish I was better at it, though I try to do the best I can.

It's a real shame what Joss turned into. Firefly is about a hero who exposes the evil and corruption of a massive and expansive government.
-
Religious litmus tests are all the rage, don't-cha-know. This just serves to demonstrate how far the left has moved beyond the years of JFK, who himself was attacked for his Catholic faith.
-
He's the mind behind Firefly. As I've said prior, it's a shame he turned out to be all Alliance, and nothing like his story's hero, Malcolm Reynolds.

Trump Congratulates Corey Stewart

Which is fair, Gug. But please take heart. As Greg says just above, there are good times ahead. There is a storm to be weathered first, for sure, as the system of control dies; but the good people are winning. People all want the same things. We love, hurt, cry, and bleed. We all want security and comfort for ourselves, our families and friends, and our progeny. Remember that you love your neighbor, and that political differences do not make us enemies. -
No, capitalism isn't "evil". Capitalism is, quite literally, the philosophy of human freedom taken from the abstract, and put into action. It is predicated on the notion of individuals entering into voluntary exchanges with one another; forced by law to provide goods and services for others in order to sustain one's self, prevented by law from seizing the assets of others or having others seize their assets, without completely voluntary contractual agreement; all predicated on the notions of absolute self-ownership and the protection of property rights.

Gugny, of course we shouldn't have white supremacists (or any other brand of bigot) representing us in government. But, as Tom says, that's not necessarily the way representative democracy works. That's why it's so important to make strong and convincing arguments against bad ideas when they pop up, such that the Richard Spencers of the world don't find themselves seated in the Senate. It's also incredibly important, along those same lines, not to allow people like Thurmal34 to impose their view of what is bigoted on the general public, because he is incredibly and dangerously wrong on the issue. -

Almost all of them, save a handful Senators (Rand Paul, Mike Lee possibly), and the Congressional Freedom Caucus. Classical liberalism is very similar to libertarianism philosophically. You should stop talking about things you don't understand. It makes you look like a moron. (size reduced to be courteous to the board's readership) You also apparently lack reading comprehension, and have an incredibly limited understanding of history. No one here called for a civil war you !@#$ing retard. No one. What I, and a several others with historical perspectives are doing, is warning that the level of vitriol the public discourse has escalated to is reaching "Bleeding Kansas" levels, to quote Tom; and that we are rapidly approaching a point where civil war will be a real possibility. But hey, by all means, please keep up with the stupid. You started off here very rationally, but you've rapidly descended into the idiocy, and for whatever reason have decided to embrace it. Your horse **** is becoming absolutely unreadable. Congratulations. -

Do you ever get tired of saying incredibly stupid, and easily disprovable things? -

To be clear, if you're calling me a racist, you can !@#$ right off you ignorant piece of ****. Again, you are not the arbiter of truth. You do not have the moral high ground. You are not "on the right side of history". People are not racist simply because "you say so". The fact that you lack any historical perspective at all, and don't understand that slavery was an absolute historical norm across the entire world, and only ended because economic and technological advances allowed it to, does not give you the right to assign ugly labels to people who disagree with you politically and have anyone take you seriously. Celebrating and preserving our history, and the monuments we have erected to those ends, is not a racist act; and those monuments are not monuments to racism. They are monuments to great individuals in our shared history who lived in different times from ours, and had different norms than ours; who were much more than the slaves that they owned. A man like Alexander Stephens, who served in the Georgia state Senate, served in the House of Representatives occupying three separate seats over the course of 21 years, served at Georgia's 50th Governor, and was nominated to be Vice-President of a new country, is far more than a quote viewed as racist by 2018 standards. He was a man of immense achievement by any reasonable standard. The only mental gymnastics occurring here are those undertaken by you in a bizarre attempt to refine a man who led an entire nation into a single statement, common for the time he lived in, dismissing everything else about him. -

Again, you are not the arbiter of truth. You do not have the moral high ground. You are not "on the right side of history". People are not racist simply because you say so. All you're doing is demonstrating that you are simple, and lack any sense of history and decency. Policy decisions that you disagree with are not racist, even if they happen to disadvantage someone who isn't white, unless the policy is specifically put in place to disadvantage someone who isn't white simply because they aren't white. This isn't happening anywhere in the United States. And again, the position that we are supposed to judge history and it's norms through the lens of modern American liberal hysteria is absurd. Stop being absurd.

You are not the arbiter of truth. You do not have the moral high ground. You are not "on the right side of history". People are not racist because "you say so". Your argument is broken, and poor. And your side is losing because of it. So by all means, keep making baseless charges of racism; and as a result, enjoy six and a half more years of President Trump, and then another eight years of Mike Pence or Nikki Haley.

No, Corey Stephens does not stand for that; and you don't get to decide that he stands for that, and magically imbue him with racism in stride. Corey Stephens stands for preserving history and heritage, some of it ugly, but all of it worth remembering. What Alexander Stephens voiced was a common sentiment of the time he lived in, not just in the Antebellum South, but all around the world. What your myopic world view, completely ignorant of history, fails to grasp is that against the back drop of all of human history, the time we live in today, made possible only by technological advances and economic growth, is absurdly unusual. Slavery and servitude are historical human norms. There is no arguing against this point. Your stance logically requires standing full throated opposition to all of human history, which is an absurd position to take. We don't need to reject where we came from. Where we came from brought us to the freedoms we all enjoy today, over the long march of time through incremental improvements. Our ancestors are not monsters to be buried and forgotten. They were great men and women who were far more than the slaves they owned. Your argument is ignorant, tired, and divisive. And, again, you are not the arbiter of truth. You do not own the moral high ground. You are not "on the right side of history". You're just a sad man, making baseless charges of racism because your argument is a poor one, and it's all you have left. And because you do this, you're losing. Badly.
