I can't say the OP is accurate in that Bass intentionally missed, but I would say that generally speaking, it's of more value for an organization to have the #1 overall versus #4. Knowing that, depriving a division opponent of the #1 at zero cost to your own organization only makes sense.

That's why I question the veracity of the reports. It's hard for an untrained, casual observer to tell direction, size, etc. They may not be over an airport for example. You probably being a flyer saw they finally determined the navy videos of the UFOs around San Diego were likely explainable via parallax effect.

It's a head scratcher for sure. Maybe Sherpa could add more, but there are absolutely a number of anti-drone and drone detection systems (including certain radar systems that can distinguish between drones and birds) that I would be surprised to find aren't being employed here. That in turn leads me to believe this is probably something of our own doing. If China or Iran were launching drones en masse over sensitive areas, after a day or two I think we'd have a good idea regarding where they were being launched and by whom.
