When you make that many starts in today’s NFL, it’s almost hard to have less than 200 yards in half of your games.

You have to have a QB that’s at least a threat to throw for 300+ in a game.

I just hope Allen is clutch.  It’s been too long since we’ve had that.  The guy that will make the throw that’s needed when the game is on the line or even to just extend a drive.  The guy that even if we are behind by 2 scores at the start of the 4th, we all still believe that we have a chance.  I never had that faith in TT.

  2. Even with all of the whiffs that have been made with players, I have to vote the hiring of Rex as the biggest and most detrimental whiff of them all.  Every team whiffs on a player now and again.  As much as it stinks, it really only affects 1 position…unless you factor in the lost draft picks used to trade up.  Rex basically set back the organization for 2+ years.

  3. My 1st one was a #55 Bennett jersey.  I loved him when he 1st joined the Bills and was crushed when he changed to #97.  Then I had a bunch of players from other teams - Barry, Deion, Randall, Irvin, Aikman – before I came back to only Bills.  Since then, I’ve had Reed x2, Moulds, Coy Wire, Evans, McGahee, Stevie, Gilmore #27, Dareus, Fred, and Sammie.

I finally got sick of spending that much on a jersey only to have the player leave or change their number.  So I tried to get a custom jersey with my name/number (#8) instead and then got a Bills Mafia patch to sew on it.  NFL shop couldn’t figure out how to print the #8 centered on the jersey.  They got it wrong twice and then just cancelled my order rather than try a 3rd time.  I might try again once the season gets closer.  Or maybe I just need to have Phillips name sewn on the back of my #99.

According to the other "Trade rumor on path to the draft" thread it will only cost us a second and a fourth to move up to #6. Yeah right.

At any rate, I hope that we can pull it off however we have to. We may end up ultimately stuck at six if the giants don't want to move out, but at least we gave it our best effort.

Just now on wgr. Giants are still deciding if they want to stay at 2 or if any other teams come in with offers . But there is an agreement with them if they decide to trade with bills

I'd be really surprised if the Giants traded all the way back to #12 without a ridiculous offer.  They risk not getting one of the blue chip prospects of this draft.

Unless 1 of the 4 QBs really stand out to McBeane, necessitating moving all the way to #2, I'd rather try to work something out with the Broncos or Colts.  Much cheaper price and that should get us one of the 4.  But if 1 of those guys does stand out, I'm fine with doing what we need to go get him.

Well, if your aim is to take a first round qb to placate fans and sell tix, then there's nothing wrong with it.  You can't miss.  If your aim is to build a winning team, however, it could be a costly mistake.   What if neither Cleveland nor the Giants take QBs?   Wow, great the Jests get first crack at the QBs, but since they had the sixth pick anyways, how are they all that much better off picking at 3 rather than 6.  Indy wasn't taking a QB.  The Browns aren't taking two.  So, that leaves Denver, which doesn't seem likely to draft a QB with both Keenum and Lynch on the roster.  So, the Jest gave up a lot to get the same or slightly better choice than they would have had if they stayed put ... and they don't control their destiny any more at #3 than they would have at #4.  They bought into the "4 QBs are going to go in the top 5" hype being spewed by the media mavens and got played by the Colts.

That's not even dealing with the bigger issue of picking the right QB in a draft class that simply has a lot of flawed prospects rather than only 1 or 2 outstanding ones.

By trading up they guaranty that they will get one of the top 3 QBs in this draft, sitting at #6 didn't even guaranty they'd get any of the 4, media hype or not.  It's more likely that both of the 1st 2 picks are QBs than neither of them being QBs.  It's almost certain that had the Jets not traded up to #3, someone else (like the Bills) would have and taken another QB off the board.  In that scenario, the Jets would then have to hope that neither the Browns nor the Broncos draft a QB or trade with someone that does.  If the Jets hit on their pick, no one will remember the picks they had to give up.

It's a slippery slope my friend.  1st amendment rights tend to win the court of law.  Don't care about company time.  They are at their job getting ready to do their job.

Anyone who has an issue with what the players are kneeling for needs to open their eyes.  Social injustices happen in this country everyday.   These players don't need to kneel.  They make millions of dollars.  They aren't kneeling for themselves it's for everyone else.

I think where it gets slippery is how do your 1st amendment rights apply when you are representing your employer...what language is in the contract he signed?  For example, every year for my job I have to acknowledge that I understand that while I am on the clock or wearing any company logos, etc. that I am not allowed to engage in any activity that could be considered political in nature.  Off the clock, I can support whatever I want.  If I do it, I'll get fired and I don't expect that my 1st amendment rights would protect me because I agreed to follow the company rules.  The collusion case will be next to impossible to prove unless there’s some secret tape or witness who flips.

For the record, I fully support CK's fight for social justices, I just don't agree with his method.

So I read this article that Seattle had planned to bring in Kaepernick for a workout, but they are postponing because they want to know if he will continue his kneeling during the anthem...

Regardless of where you stand on for or against what he's doing....This sounds like it will seriously bolster any case Kaepernick has about being black-balled... Not sure what they were thinking with letting this information get out.  As an employer, this would clearly be seen as discrimination based on a constitutional right.

I look at it as just the opposite.  If he was being black balled, Seattle wouldn’t have even considered bringing him in.  I think the fact that they even reached out to him and then his response hurts his case.  I also think what went down in Cincinnati a few days ago with the safety (Reid?) that knelt with him also hurts the overall collusion case.  Teams are willing to sign the players that have knelt but aren’t willing to take the chance that their continued in-uniform political protests will alienate the fans because it ultimately impacts the bottom line.

If Kaep came out and said that he would stand for the anthem and no longer discuss the issue while at team related activities, I think he’d be signed tomorrow.

Mets have been using him (whilst paying him) for minor league affiliate ticket/merch sales from day one.  I've hated the little experiment from the beginning and can't wait till it's over.  This guy is as good at pro baseball as he was at pro football.  Get back to calling college football games and making anti-abortion commercials with your mommy.  Fraud.

100% agree, nothing but a cash grab but as much as I don't like it, I do understand it.  The lower levels of baseball need any extra revenue that they can get and this has been a huge one for them.  They sold out like every game he played in last year.  The main thing I dislike is that he's taking a roster spot away from someone who deserves it more.  It was easier for me to overlook that when he was in rookie ball or even A ball last year because few if any of those players are legitimate MLB candidates.  As he moves up, it gets harder for me to ignore.  Where do you draw the line between money and fielding the best team possible?  For me, we're at that line now and calling him up to AAA would cross it...unless his play dramatically improves.  1 for 18 with 11 strike outs in spring training does not warrant a spot in AA.

I say all that but if the extra revenue helps the Mets contend in even some small way, I'll be ok with it.

That's fine... But he actually has little to no leverage. If he doesn't show up and play, he won't use up this year of the contract, still be under contract with NYG, and have wasted a year in his prime.

It's like playing chicken with a  freight train: it won't give up, flinch, or stop. You either give in or get run over.

He just needs to show up by I believe week 10.  Coming back to play that last part of the season will give him enough to use up that last year on his contract.

I think he holds a lot of the leverage because he knows that some team will make him the highest paid WR if the Giants won’t.  If the Giants are no longer willing to do that (I wouldn’t blame them if they aren’t) their best bet is to trade him.

I hope that whoever signs him is smart enough to put a bunch of behavioral clauses in there.

  10. I don't think our FO would want him back.  He didn't buy into the process so that ship has sailed.  Especially for the money I think he'll want.

IMO, the only way that we can say for certain we won the trade is if Sammy doesn't resign with the Rams.  Was a 1 year rental worth a 2nd and Gaines?  Not even close.  But if he does resign with the Rams, can stay healthy and continues to grow in that offense then I think the price is well worth it for them.  We'd need to turn that pick into a high contributing player to even come close to winning it.

I just like the fact that we finally have a FO that has the foresight to realize that we'd be losing a player either way so they got something for him.  That's a win right there to me.

You could be correct about Butler but it seems that if he wanted to spin it, he’d use injuries as an excuse.  That’s an easy out.  If Bucky made a full recovery, and got beat out by low end receivers, it doesn’t say much about Butler as a talent evaluator.  You can’t afford to miss that badly on high picks.

That’s why I believe Butler here.  I just think Bucky wasn’t very good

I really don't know why Butler said what he did.  I'm just 99.9999% certain that a player with an ACL tear in 1994 would not be fully recovered by 1995.  I believe it was medically impossible at that time.  I speculated that Butler possibly said that for money purposes.  If a guy's contact is guaranteed against injury (and I don't know if Bucky's was) but not for lack of production, then the GM or more specifically the owner might want things worded a certain way to avoid paying.

I fully believe that his career was ruined by a torn ACL and not lack of ability therefore would not consider him a draft bust.

  12. 2 hours ago, dave mcbride said:

Brooks was lights-out good as a receiver in his first training camp. Kelly went on and on at the time about how much better the offense was going to be because of his talent. He was no bust at all; he just happened to have a really bad acl tear at a point in time when the surgery wasn't as good as it is now. He never got his blazing speed back, and I remember it well. Players who suffer bad injuries aren't busts; they're just examples of bad luck.

Completely agree.  A torn ACL was basically a career ender back in those days.  The Bills probably knew immediately that his career was over but had to give him a chance to come back.  The fact that he was able to carve out any kind of NFL career after the injury was kind of impressive.  I would not label Bucky a bust at all.

    46 minutes ago, BuffaloRush said:

He never recovered?  In this article from 1995 John Butler said that he DID make a full recovery and that he was cut because of “tough completion.”  Which by the way was Damon Thomas and Justin Armour.  Yes the injury could have been a huge factor in his lack of success but I think it’s fair to say he’s in bust territory.

    http://buffalonews.com/1995/08/23/the-buck-stops-here-as-bills-release-brooks/

After suffering an ACL tear in 1994, he would not have been 100% healthy in 1995.  There's just no way.  Even if the knee was structurally sound, most players with that injury at that time never made a full recovery, they lost some of their speed and quickness.  The medical procedure just wasn't good enough at that time.  Even nowadays, if a player tears his ACL in week 3, there is no guarantee that he'll be ready for training camp the following year.  Sure you have some athletic freaks like AP but many players take around 18 months to truly be fully healed and able to do what they could do prior to the injury.  Possibly Butler was putting a spin on the situation to avoid injury settlements, etc?  He wouldn't be the 1st GM to not be completely honest about a player's injury status.

If it were someone like Mike Williams or Aaron Maybin or John McCargo trying to rank players for the draft, that would be ironic.  I'd put Bucky in the category of a guy who's career was derailed by injury not as a bust.  IMO, there's a big difference.

That's one guy I always admired and would love to have a few beers with.

When I was a kid, I played pee wee football...or whatever they call it now...for CSRA in Hamburg.  The last year I played, probably around 1992, Talley's daughter was a cheerleader for the youngest squad so he came to the year end banquet.  My Dad still talks about how much fun he and the other fathers had sitting around drinking beers with him that night.  He was such a down to earth, relatable, funny guy.

And with the teams listed in front of us, the Browns and Giants are 100% going to grab a QB, with the Broncos & Jets likely going for one as well. The Cardinals situation is unclear, but even so it's unlikely Palmer/Arians/Fitzgerald will be there much longer. The Redskins are 50/50 with Cousins, so that's a toss up too. I don't see the Dolphins giving up on Tannehill, or the Ravens on Flacco just yet, so they're not worries to me.

Thanks for posting.  FYI, both Palmer and Arians just announced their retirements earlier this week so AZ is likely in the QB hunt as well.

It'll be interesting to see how these ranking change as the offseason kicks into full gear and these guys are nitpicked over every little detail.

For some reason I have a feeling McCoy's injury is not as severe as being made out to be. Decoy maybe to sway the Jags defensive focus? Wouldn't be surprised to hear a lot of us come Sunday saying, "Man, he's moving pretty well for a man with a ankle injury!"  Shady goes for 150 yds from scrimmage with2 TD's. I hope.

I really, really hope that you're right but he was carted off the field so I think that's a longshot.  I'd be a little more optimistic if he'd have limped off the field instead.  I do expect him to play but I'd be amazed if he looks anywhere near 100%.  Shady tried to play through a bum wheel last season and it didn't go so well.

I think it'll be a committee approach and that Murphy will end up leading the way by a hair.  I predict Shady ends up with less than 10 touches but we still win a low scoring game.

  16. Smith & TT are very similar in style but I believe Smith is a little more accurate in terms of ball placement and can anticipate throws a little better.  Only way I'd be on board with a move like this is if they draft a QB as well.  I don't think that it would take more than a low round pick either.  Guys that are likely to be cut if they can't be traded typically don't fetch too much in a trade.

  17. That is definitely one fun thing about being an out of town Bills fan.  Whenever we come across someone flying the flag or wearing a shirt/hat, it's always an enjoyable conversation.

I currently live just outside of Charlotte, and it's actually quite astonishing how many Bills fans live here, for Buffalo being a small-market, perennial loser. In my neighborhood alone, there are at least five different houses (that I know of) that are Bills fans because they either have flags, stickers on their cars, or what not. I'm sure there are even more. Furthermore, at my work I meet lots of Bills fans. I always have my Bills-painted Yeti cup on my desk and I'm always surprised how many Bills fans I come across.

Bills fans are everywhere down here.  I live just south of Charlotte, in Fort Mill, SC and like you have at least 5 houses in my neighborhood that are Bills fans.  Years ago someone stuck a Bills sticker on the nameplate outside my office and I've found that there are a bunch of Bills fans that work on my floor too.  I sure enjoy those conversations more this year than in the past...I like talking about the current season in December.

Does anyone else feel numb to yesterday?  I see a lot of posters angry and disappointed, but I am just numb.

Not saying that it's a good thing, it's just after so many years of this type of stuff I am just used to it.  I shouldn't be, but it's better than getting your hopes up.  Look at the lack of talent we have on both sides of the ball.  I just had low expectations for the season. Our best player on defense is a rookie and our best player on offense is a running back.  Generally that doesn't work out great.

Not numb because this is kind of what I expected from the start of the season…minus the blowouts to the Jets and Chargers.  This is and always has been a rebuild.  After the 5-2 start, too many people lost sight of the fact that we’re just not a very talented team and let their hopes get way too high.

I'm just happy we got some of the unexpected early wins that we did, it was fun.  But at this point, I’d say we’d be lucky to win 2 more games the rest of the way.  Under the circumstances, I’ll be OK with that as long as when the season is over, we don’t have any questions on the roster.  I want to see almost everyone get some decent playing time so we know who is worth keeping for next year and who needs to go.

    47 minutes ago, Billzgobowlin said:

This is the Raiders game from a couple of years ago but a lot earlier in the year.  The sad thing is this was a winnable game.  We have one good early drive on both sides of the field and every week they stop playing.  Last week it was a FG, this week it was McCoy's TD and then both sides stop playing.  McDerm and Co are not correcting mistakes fast enough.  Curious what Polian has to say about this mess after recommending both Coach and GM.  McDerm needs to fire coaching staff immediately before he loses this whole team and fan base.

Call for certain coach’s heads all you want, changing them likely won’t make a difference.  We don’t have the talent to run anyone’s system up to par.  Changing coaches/systems every year will only set things back.  System continuity is important.
