Bill's Offensive Line is the problem. Amazing stat.
Peter replied to Kevin1778's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Some of us mentioned in the off season that the line was not any good. These numbers help tell the story. It is especially ridiculous given that the Bills drafted a very raw QB (and gave up a lot of assets to do so). One would have thought that McBeane would have done everything in their power to make sure that Josh (or whoever our QB was going to be as well as our RBs) had a good offensive line to help the transition. Every time I see Dion pushed around, by way of example, I wonder who came up with the brilliant idea to trade Cordy. Oh well. -
We disagree then.
-
I take it from the back and forth that you and I disagree. God bless.

Rex probably will not coach again in the NFL. After working terrible hours for nearly 365 days a year, I also cannot blame former head coaches like Cowher, Rex, and others to "take some time off" by working in the media.
-
Both Mario and his body gave up. P.S. Although I loved Arsene and did not want to see him go, I completely support Unai Emery. He is such a better coach than McCoach . . . seems to even be more articulate in English than McCoach. When was Shaq finally able to step on the field? When did Shaq actually fully recover from his surgery?
-
Clearly, I disagree. I did like both Pettine and Schwartz though. P.S. I do not recall that Schwartz ever lifted a finger to try to get Mario to go to the Eagles. P.P.S. The Bills had a bunch of injuries on defense as I recall (particularly among the DBs) in addition to Mario being on strike and Gilmore deciding that tackling was not part of the job. Rex also did not have the benefit of having a first round pick his first year or healthy top two draft choices his second.
-
Mario did the same thing with the Dolphins when he took their money . . . even though he had claimed they were running the scheme he wanted. Rex is getting paid a lot of money to work one day a week. It is the same with Cowher and others. Not a bad gig. Also, it is a lot better than having to put up with some of the hysterical criticism.
-
This is getting old. Mario went on strike, we had a lot of injuries (especially DBs), Gilmore decided that tackling was not part of his job, we did not have a first round pick prior to his first year, and both our top picks prior to his second year were hurt or got hurt. Whatever. If you think that Rex does not know defense, that is up to you.
-
I still cannot believe that we traded up for Zay.
-
We gave up a ton of assets to draft Josh . . . a very, very raw QB . . . and we have no idea whether he is the QB of the future. So yes, this is just one example of how this team may be set back . . . not to mention if we have a rinse and repeat with the coach and GM.
-
$7.00 tickets . . . that is the kind of thing that could get the Pegulas' attention. It is going to be very interesting to see how full the stadium is in December and what the season ticket renewals are in the off season.
-
We may already be set back with the moves they have made . . . .
-
This is so true as to many on this board. Perhaps a bit of hyperbole . . . but your overall point is right on. That is the nice thing about invoking (but never defining) what the process is. One can always look back and claim it is just part of the process.
-
Clearly, I disagree. A couple things are certain: 1) Rex was not the one who leaked about himself; 2) Rex actually has coached two teams in the AFC championship game - something none of our other coaches not named Marv ever have done; 3) Rex was given every opportunity during press conferences in his last year of being the Bills head coach to point the finger elsewhere and he did not. For example, in both years he was coach, he defended guys to a fault - even Mario who went on strike during games. The one thing McCoach got right was he insisted on his own guy as the GM so that he would have a guy who would not undermine him. Rex should have done that especially after what he went through in NY with his last GM there.

I defend what I believe in . . . so yes.

As I mentioned in another post, McCoach is Dick Jauron without the charisma. Note: For our younger readers, Dick Jauron had no charisma.

Are we exactly what "everyone" thought we would be? I remember that I pointed out that last year was a complete mirage. Some of us pointed out that we really are not that good during this past off season. I remember there being a lot of push back and even negative threads about the line/team being closed down. The nice thing about the "process" is that one can always say - after the fact - that such and such is part of the process. When McBeane get fired (whether next week or years from now), we can always say that it was part of the process.
-
As I said, I am under no illusions that I am ever going to convince the Rex haters. I do think it is funny though how some of the McCoach defenders castigated Rex when we had 11 men on the field when one of our DBs got hurt, but never seem to mention that McCoach had 15 guys on the field against the Pats last year. That might even be an NFL record. I have no idea whether you were one of those guys, but it seems like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some who had it in for Rex and they will always look at him through that prism. Oh well. We all have to suffer now with this completely unwatchable team that McBeane have sucked the life out of. Happy days . . . .

Thank you for posting. Wade and Rex never should have been fired. As an aside, the Pegulas missed an opportunity to re-hire Wade (after they made the mistake of firing their head football coach in less than two years after he had been undermined). Wade was a great guy and loved Buffalo. Hiring him would have been a great football hire and would have righted a wrong.

As much as I love the Pegulas, firing their head coach in less than two years (and firing that head coach) was a monumental mistake. You can read all of my old posts for the reasons why. As for the leaks, someone leaked to Vic before the season and to certain guys like LaCanfora during the season . . . and just before the biggest game of the year that year (Pittsburgh) that he was going to get fired. I always suspected that Whaley was behind those leaks. Karma got Whaley in the end. Yes, those leaks (and presumably whatever else Whaley did behind the scenes) undermined the head football coach. It is never good to be the head football coach when there are constant rumors that you are going to get fired. It is not good for the coach and it does nothing to help the coach with the players he is supposed to lead. I wonder if that is one of the reasons a guy like Gilmore thought that tackling was not part of his job. Just my two cents. I am under no illusions that I am going to convince the Rex haters to come around. The sad news is that both the Rex haters and the rest of us are stuck with this completely unwatchable team that McBeane have sucked the life out of and gets blown out on a regular basis. (Not so) Fun Facts: We now have a -145 point differential with only 9 games played. The next worst team is the Raiders who are -111. We were - 57 last year and + 21 the year before.
-
Thanks for pointing out that this is not a new position. As for the rest, I obviously disagree. I think "half assing it" and "buffoon" (a word others have used) are just something you guys use to fit your narrative. I am not sure why having a personality is now something that is bad. I cannot listen to McCoach and his drivel anymore - and he is doing the same thing to the team. He has sucked the life out of this team. Rex should have been given at least through the end of his contract. And, as much as McClappy bothers me and I have real doubts about whether to trust McBeane going forward, I don't think that they should be fired in less than two years.
-
Yes, undermined by leaks. If there are leaks that you are going to be fired since before the start of the second season, that is text book undermined. It makes it pretty darn difficult to coach a team when your players keep on hearing that you are going to get fired.
-
Jaruon did not have any charisma. It was my attempt at a joke.

The following is not a popular opinion on this board: As much as I love the Pegulas, it was a huge mistake firing Rex. There is no way a coach should be fired in less than two years --- especially a coach who had been the most successful coach for the Buffalo Bills for the past nearly two decades and who was being undermined behind the scenes with leaks etc. Rex should have been allowed to at least continue for the term of his contract. To put things in perspective, the point differential was much worse last year than the year before and the relative offensive and defensive rankings were worse last year than the year before. As much as Rex got grief for having 11 men on the field (when, as it turns out, a DB got hurt and a defensive back coach presumably did not send a replacement in the game), Rex never had 15 freaking guys on the field as McCoach did last year against the Pats. I do not think that I ever have seen any other team or coach have 15 guys on the field at the same time. Rex also had personality whereas the current guy is McMilktoast and cannot help repeating his stolen mantra the "process." McCoach is Dick Jauron without the charisma.* Between his personality and what he has done with the team, he has sucked the life out of the team (and my view of the team under him). I would take Rex over the current guy and thought it was unfair to undermine and then fire Rex in less than two years. As I state above, Rex should have been allowed to at least coach the team through the term of his contract. As much as I am not particularly impressed with McCoach, I also think that it would be unfair to fire him in less than two years. * For the younger readers, Dick Jauron did not have any charisma . . . and neither does McCoach. This was a joke.

It is the chicken and the egg. Did Sammy underperform because of the QBs we had? He still would be head and shoulders better than each WR we have on the team now. This regime managed to get rid of or make no attempt to keep some darn good receivers: Sammy Robert Woods Marquise Goodwin. This regime also made no attempt to keep our prior outstanding WR coach Sanjay Lal or our outstanding offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. Instead McCoach decided to keep the absolute worst coach on the prior staff for reasons we can only guess.
