Coaches vs players. Which is more responsible for poor play?
Mickey replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I blame the equipment managers who, for far too long, have escaped all criticism from the fan base and the sports broadcasting illuminati. Their disastrous decision to go with rag wool underwear in a rain storm and the predictable widespread chafing it caused doomed the Bills in Baltimore before they even left the locker room. Their excuse, that it was a "low cost, short term solution" to their worsening uniform budget deficit is all you need to know about their goals and intentions. Profit over wins, that's the mindset in the equipment room. They simply refuse to accept the analytics on the statistical relationship between testicular comfort and on the field performance. Cotton! For god's sake, cotton! It is the only fabric used in Constanza Inc.'s "Shorts for Sports" line, the standard in the industry. -
Nobody should be doubting Beane or McDermott

Was the plan to get a franchise QB, trade away the seasoned, accomplished veteran who could have mentored him and have his reps split three ways in practice with two guys who have no future in this league? If so, McD nailed it, stuck the landing, 10.0 from the Russian judge. I want to trust the process but I can't pretend that this is looking good or build an argument subtle enough to delude me in to thinking this is all good. -
Neither of our qb's is ready to be a starter in the NFL. However, one of them has the potential to be a franchise guy and one of them does not. It's a no brainer unless your goal is to give Nate Peterman some cherished memories to sustain him as he begins his second career as dead account specialist for Bank of America sometime later this fall.

Can we stop calling Nate a rookie? He isn't a rookie, this is his second year. He has had two off seasons full of workouts, he has had two preseasons and he went through an entire year as the No. 2 QB for an NFL franchise including two starts. He had a year to learn from a veteran, seasoned QB in Tyrod Taylor. He is not a rookie. Josh Allen still has a drawer full of Wyoming Cowboys t-shirts and his name, address and parent's phone number pinned to his mittens. Josh Allen is a rookie. One off season and one preseason where he spent his time sharing reps with two other QB's and learning what little he could from one never-was QB and another never-will-be QB. It's like trying to learn how to drive by watching Helen Keller drive a golf cart. Nate may not be a seasoned veteran but he is most definitely not a rookie. -
What is the first phone call Beane makes today?

'Swounds! I am revealed. In the shadows no more. My feelings on this tragedy of a game recalled to me the closing remarks of the Prince in Romeo & Juliet: "...heaven finds means to kill your joys with love...all are punish'd..." -
Run game needs to be a stable....

What magic running plays are we not using that you can suggest that would pile up the yardage against 9 men in the box and a talentless O-line? -

The Organizational Incompetence of the Buffalo Bills

"low cost short term solution" is the philosophical cancer at the heart of this franchise and way too many of its fans. -
Missing him the first time was somewhat more excusable as draft picks are never sure things. This time around his abilities were a certainty. *sigh*
-
Gee, so glad we didn't spend draft picks on that mack guy.

Hap, I may be reading between the lines or interpreting this wrong but it kinda seems like you are saying that maybe we aren't very good. Am I off base here?? -

Bills First Uniform: Honolulu Blue, Silver, White
Mickey replied to Fadingpain's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Just having fun with contrasting language, no rant intended. Most criticism of millennials is unfair in my view. It is interesting to me how things once known by just about everyone can fade into a challenging trivia question with the passage of time. As for the uniforms, it was at one point common knowledge that Ralph wanted a team in Miami where he had a winter home but he couldn't get a deal for use of the Orange Bowl. He was going to quit looking for a team but Lama Hunt urged him to consider other cities like Louisville. He had two friends who told him about Buffalo which was a lot like Wilson's native Detroit. They told him how well the Buffalo Bisons of the All-America Football Conference did in terms of fan support. As he was a personal fan of his hometown team, the Lions, he used their color scheme in the team's inaugural year. If you have seen the Lions play in their old-timey throwbacks then you've essentially seen the uniforms the Bills used on 1960. Although I think they didn't have face masks. -

In the time long ago, back when the world and I were young, this knowledge was common amongst all the peoples of our fair land. Alas, such lore now is held only by the last of the elders. Soon they too shall pass from this place and take with them the stories of our grandfathers for age is a wind which carries memory away. Effing millennials. -
Sorry folks, didn't mean to fool anyone, this was meant as entertainment. I thought the "ReacherReport" was a clear enough jab at the Bleacher Report to make that clear. I should have added some smilies.
-
Unbelievably, this inside info was just leaked to the ReacherReport. Apparently the Bills base their audibles on songs and lyrics by the Beatles. Now that these have been made public, they will need new ones, any suggestions?
-
No, no, no, you've got it entirely backwards. You get good by scrupulously avoiding accumulating great players because that just blows your cap. Go for mediocre players that help keep the cap low. And then, well, then you...you have a really good cap situation which is soooo great. Just wait and see. There was no three level chess, master plan here. He is a great player and Buffalo wanted him bad enough to be one of the few teams to make a serious offer which means they offered a ton despite the OP's speculation that Beane wouldn't pay a ransom for Mack. Chicago just offered even more.

"couldn't hold Mario's jock" and "Mack=Mario" Does not compute.

I think the better comparison for Peterman is Joe Montana. Think about it. They are both men. They both have the exact same number of extremities and digits. They both play football. I know, its eerie isn't it? But there's more. They both play the same position! Both were successful D-1 college QB's. Both were drafted by an honest-to-god NFL team. Both earned the right to be a starting QB in the NFL. And get this, neither of them has ever been in my kitchen. Coincidence? Proof of Peterman's future greatness? Science people, it matters. And yessss, my skillful use of italics makes my argument unassailable, you bunch of neo-luddite rubes.
-
Nothing. But that is not what I am saying. If the standard is "best chance of winning" well, there will almost always be a more experienced QB available who would give us a better chance at winning than a rookie who has been doing nothing but holding a clipboard and running the scout team. Ever teach a kid to drive? You don't start out on the thruway but you don't have him driving in parking lots for a year either. At some point, even though his driving skills aren't the "best" you have to give him the wheel. Allen isn't ready for the thruway at this point so I don't have an issue starting Nate. But at some point, sooner rather than later, Allen needs to start even if Peterman gives us a 3% "better chance" of winning. Frankly, if "better chance of winning" is the standard, I don't know why Tyrod is in Cleveland. I think its going to work out fine anyway. I don't believe in magical transformations in one season so I fully expect Nate to struggle. He is not exactly a veteran himself and the line looks awful. At some point Allen will get his shot.
-
There is value to that, no doubt, but at some point you have to take the plunge and live with the kind of mistakes rookies make, have always made and always will make. You learn best by doing, not by watching. I don't disagree with starting Nate but I think Allen needs to start sooner rather than later unless by some miracle Nate develops into a franchise guy.
