OT - Don't let your girls grow up to be
Mark VI replied to stuckincincy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hardly surprised. Last year, I helped out with a coach pitch baseball team that my daughter was on. It's all instructional and not competitive. Still, I saw a few problem parents, who actually made their own kids uncomfortable with their antics. My daughter wanted to concentrate on summer gymnastics this year and gave up baseball, because she didn't like some of " the angry parents ". Amazing perspective from a 9 year old. Funny how supposed adults are blind to this assine behavior. -

Fair enough. But quoting Florio at profootballtalk in past threads has as much credibility as the National Enquirer. Plus TD did take over a complete mess in 2001, as Simon stated. How we won 8 games in 2002 is beyond me. TD made 2 glaring mistakes since his arrival, which was hiring GW as the Coach and sticking with an ineffective, aging DB at QB. Those decisions alone put us behind by 2 years, IMO. He seems to have chosen wisely the 2nd time around in the coaching dept. The recent QB switch won't be known for a year or 2 but aquiring Holcomb as a backup is very reassuring that the depth is there, just in case. I think he gets 2 more years and then he deserves the boiling tar treatment. The drafting of McGahee in 2003 and the followup of Evans and Losman in 2004 shows some effort to upgrade positions he felt were lacking top production. Seems to have done well the past few years with Veteran Free Agent signings. Top ST's play and a good Defense is always a good starting point. If the Offense can improve, then we have something here. Realistic optimism is warranted. I put the focus on Mularkey and the coaches, from this point on. This roster looks to be the best in 5 years. Time will tell. -
The most amazing thing ever in sports

Actually, it was 12 perfect innings and the opposing pitcher did pitch all 13 innings but gave up 12 hits. May 26, 1959: In a singular performance, Harvey Haddix of the Pirates pitches a perfect game against Milwaukee for 12 innings, only to lose in the 13th. Felix Mantilla opens the last inning by reaching base on an error. A sacrifice and an intentional walk to Hank Aaron brings up Joe Adcock, who hits one out of the park in right-CF for an apparent 3–0 victory. Aaron pulls a "Merkle," leaving the field, and Adcock passes him on the basepaths. Both are called out as Mantilla scores. Lew Burdette goes all 13 innings for his 8th win, scattering 12 hits. As a consequence of the baserunning in the 13th, the Braves leave an National League-record one runner on base. Haddix's gem makes him the 9th pitcher to lose a no-hitter in extra innings; A combined effort of three Reds pitcher, on May 26, 1956, was the last. Making Haddix's effort even more remarkable is the fact that the Braves hitter knew what was coming. In 1993, Bob Buhl admitted that the Braves pitchers were stealing the signs from Smoky Burgess, who could not crouch down all the way. They would place a towel on the bullpen fence in such a way to signal fastball or breaking ball. -
I've been taping those old one hour episodes of " This Week In The NFL " ( hosted by Pat Summeral and Tom Brookshire ) and really enjoy them. They had week one and week two of the 1973 season last week. Last year, they were showing all the 1969 and 1970 highlights. Win or lose, those were great memories of youth.

Pat Williams on his new team and the Bills
Mark VI replied to RVJ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This whole thread was about Pat Williams and his ability to play every down. In my opinion, he cannot . He's most effective in a rotation and I still like the guy when used in that situation. At 33, he wanted full time starter $$ and didn't get it here. You decided to take another opportunity to bash TD, something you enjoy on a daily basis. I question many a TD move over the last 4 years but I try to look at the postives and negatives. I think this team is going in the right direction and TD should get another 2 years to prove it out. The D looks good, the ST's look great and moves have been made to improve an inept Offense. It's May, when optimism is the norm for a team with legit talent. Your " I dislike TD " position was understood by the TSW community the first 700 times you posted it. After a while, I have to view is as campaigning and adding little to the discussion. The above response adds nothing to the Pat Williams topic. -

“(Buffalo general manager Tom Donahoe) doesn’t know what he’s doing down there. I want to play every snap. I don’t have no weight problem, that’s the other guys. I’m good.” Horses*#t . If I had a dime for every time I saw him gasping for breath, I could retire. I like Pat and was sorry to see him go but make no mistake. He was best in a rotation and needed a breather every bit as much as Sam Adams. TD wasn't the Coach who decided on the rotation. Bitter because he didn't get the initial big $$ and settled for just a little more from the Vikes. I wish him well but I read the same drivel from Thurman, Andre Reed, Bruce Smith and many others when they left for other teams. I take his comments as scorned pride and little else. -

Would you pass on your snazzy technicolor dreamcoat, upon his 16th birthday ?

I just turned the other cheek. Of course, I'm in rehab.

I expect the Cowboys to run as much as possible with Julius Jones, since their QB cannot. Otherwise, they will be blitzed early and often which doesn't bode well. The Defense has Roy Williams and little else. I believe the Cowboys will struggle in that Division. Living in the past only worked for George Allen 30 + years ago but it's a losing formula in the cap age. Parcells had his best years with Belichick standing by his side and those days are long gone.

That punt return had Byrd going down the sidelines with 2 players to beat. Paul Maguire was blocking. He tramples the first guy and throws himself at the ankles of the last guy, cutting his legs out as Byrd jogs into the end zone. What an outstanding effort. Maguire was crazy as all hell but a top effort football player. He always hustled and could really hit on Special Teams and when he filled in at LB. Great punter. Actually started his career with the Chargers as a TE.

I'm betting 10 points higher a game. He could drive to the basket with ease but would stop and launch 25 + footers quite often every game. If he could actually see the 3 point line in front of him, he would have attempted more from the outside. May have been the greatest natural shooter I ever saw. -

Did Lee Evans look slow to you last season ? He had a much worse tear at Wisconson during his junior campaign. His speed improved every game during his Senior season. Then look at his rookie year with the Bills. He recovered all his speed. That's not always the case but Everett has a very good chance to get his speed back. Willis had the worst of all and he's showing more every time out.

As you can see by the Jacksonville blurb on this mornings front page, the pressure is mounting. Henry is being mentioned quite frequently now, albeit by the press. Still, the concerns of RB depth for several teams is very real. I realize trading away Henry may create a legit concern with our own RB depth but the Bills are at the point of no return with Henry. In reality, he can't help on Special teams and clearly wasn't the same player early last season, tripping all over himself in key situations. The poor attitude is just the last draw. McGahee is our starter and the Bills will probably keep an eye out for a camp cut of a Vet if Shaud Williams, the rookie Gates and the recently aquired Lee are less than impressive. -

"Schaefer.. is the.. one beer to have when you're having more than one " Anyone remember that jingle ? Remember the Schaefer Circle of Champions with top athletes promoting that beer ? " Come into the Schaefer circle " . That was once the official beer of Yankee stadium. My brother lived in Long Island and we attended a Yankees game in 1978, watching Ron Guidry win his 20th game against the Tigers. Schaefer was the only beer you could find and it was completely flat with a horrid taste. These days, we are so spoiled with the high quality beer available to us. Didn't used to be like that. Simon Pure, Blatz, Iroquios, Utica Club..the list is endless.

My avatar shows Jack Kemp in 1964. That's the jersey the throwback may resemble. ( I own that identical Kemp jersey ) It was new that year, changed from the shoulder stripe jerseys Lori was speaking about. The following season, they added the blue stripes on both sides of the center red stripe on the helmet. My father went up to Brand Names and bought that new helmet for me in the summer of 1965 ( made by Franklin sports ). It still sits in the next room of my house.
