  1. I'll have to check out the book. Like I said before, I don't subscribe exclusively to one economic theory. I'm familiar with a lot of Friedman's views, but I'll have to give it a read. And as I said in another thread, my professors had a very wide range of views. There was only one Keynesian and I had no classes with him.
  2. I really think Romney needs to run a better campaign. He is holding on hoping enough people will vote against Obama. Get out there and get your own message out on what you're going to do to help America.
  3. I missed this thread until now. Great post. I agree with most of what you said here. I don't subscribe to one economic theory, though I do lean towards Keynesian Eocnomics slightly. Deficit spending in a downturn in usually a good thing, but sometimes it is not enough - 2009 is a prime example. It was obvious that the economy was in really bad shape, and a lot of things needed to repaired. The Recovery Act was good, but more needed to be done with banking, housing, and tax reform afterwards. Like you said, the stimulus began to wear off and nothing was fixed structurally with the economy. Growth is very weak and things aren't looking exactly great for the rest of the year. The bad part about all of this is American politics. Nothing is going to get done until at least November after the elections.
  4. This board is nowhere close to a microcosm of the United States. Actually, I don't think it's even close. It's YOUR problem for being offended by selectively telling yourself what I believe.
  5. I've explained myself now 10 times in the thread. Hard work is important. Not going to keep repeating it. I'm not here to pat business owners on the back. We all work hard for what we have! If you want to say that business owners work harder than a non-business owner, go ahead. I'm not going to make that judgment call. Things aren't universal. Yes.
  6. Investors, Customers, Government (tax credits, roads, bridge), Banks, etc. You could argue government could hamper business creation in some situations though.
  7. Maybe, in some other countries are aren't ALLOWED to thrive like you can here. Again, harping on words is pointless.
  8. What I was trying to say is that working hard is not the only things that goes into it. But, that is the answer most people give. I'm pretty sure we all hold the same views on this, but we're debating it over semantics. Work hard is a key ingredient success. Agreed? Do others help you along with creating that successful business is some way? Agreed. Move along. No he didn't. I'm done with you.
  9. You're twisting words and you don't even see it. I never said hard work doesn't count because it most certainly does. As I said in the previous post, it's not the only thing that goes into making a business successful. I am not offended by successful business owners. That is just stupid. I love local small businesses - the city of Buffalo is booming with them now. I also plan on opening a business with a friend of mine at some point. You're making this so black and white. It's either your with small business owners or you're against them. That's not how it works. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the first 49 seconds of the video. Actually, it's all true. He messed up at the end as I continue to say.
  10. This argument is so pointless. It was probably had about 5 pages back in this thread. Romney is going to run with this until November. Go ahead. Obama is going with a new positive approach to the campaign it looks like and that's what wins elections. Instead of talking about BS, I'll start some threads where we can talk about actual policies and issues. More productive than this horseshit.
  11. It does fit into a "narrative". Of course, that narrative has no basis in reality. And maybe he does have contempt for those who claim they worked harder because they own a business. Frankly, I don't like when people just say "I worked hard" for this. A lot of things go into running a successful business - if working hard was the solution, a lot more people would have businesses.
  12. Agreed. The President was making a point how everything is intertwined in the economy. Government, yourself, other friends/family, investors, etc. The you didn't build that business comment came out bad. End of story. Who actually would say that government built your business?? (The President didn't say this, but you all infer it's what he meant.) I don't think anybody holds that view. It just doesn't make sense.
  13. If Obama has just said "on your own" after his statement, this would've been all over with. It's so blown out of proportion. You Romney Bots have wanted to talk about real issues and policy forever and then you turn around and harp on things like this for weeks. Okay.
  14. Oh wow, why did I come back to this. It's like a giant echo chamber of conservative talking points. I'm assuming nobody watched the video where Romney says the exact same things as the President did?
  15. Jon Stewart Slams You-Didn't-Build-That-Gate In Romney, Fox News' Faces (VIDEO) You can pretty much get to the end of the video to show how ridiculous it is that the Romney is running with this out of context statement. You can watch the whole thing though, it's only like 6 minutes long.
  16. No, Buffalo is an awesome place to be currently. It weathered the recession like you said. But, it's not just because the rest has been dragged down. It has nothing to do with political party either. There are things to do here. Businesses being opened. Great college atmospheres with UB and Buff St. All of the Buffalo Public Schools have been remodeled. (Now they have to fix the system!) Go to BuffaloRising.com to see all the great things going on here...
  17. Actually, we are doing pretty damn good right now. Every elected official in Buffalo is a Democrat. Crazy! The rest of WNY is probably more Republican besides Niagara Falls.
  18. B-man, how do you not get sick of these Op-ed pieces?? Lol. As soon a writer drops the "Un-American" bomb, I'm done with them.
  19. I agree that the government should be very careful handing them out especially with our deficits the way they are. Any kind of reduced waste helps.
  20. I was using "we" as in people. That would include the private sector and government. Using government grants to fund research is definitely not always a bad thing. I'm not claiming government money is spent efficiently, especially nowadays. But, government can help push the private sector into developing new technology or in this case energy sources.
  21. Seems simplistic. So you don't think this won't get voters riled up at all? The Democrats could feed some line about the GOP trying to take away your right to vote.
  22. It would be nice to for the government AND the private sector to move on it. And I think there is progress being made on it. Oil is going to run out sooner than later. Are you arguing we shouldn't be developing new energy sources now?
  23. Why do you get so upset? What was stupid about my response? Please tell me.
  24. I think the GOP should drop this issue. They will lose on it and only rally the other side to actually come out and use their right to vote.
