What’s with the Face Mask debacle?
clayboy54 replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills need to put stickum on their facemasks so defenders can't let go and officials can't miss the calls. -
I'm really curious to know what Duke needs to improve upon in the coaches eyes. Sure he dropped a couple, but that's not it though. Maybe he is running sloppy routes or missing his reads or something. In the postgame presser, McDermott mentioned that he's a young guy and he has some plays he would like to have back. He also made sure to smile and mention that he seems to be a fan favorite and brings the juice. To me that's like saying you like him but we aren't sold on him yet. I guess we'll see what happens on Saturday afternoon.

The number one attribute for a gunner on teams is speed. Foster has that. Even if he takes a moment longer to disengage from the initial block, he will arrive downfield well before the ten other players. Then, his lane responsibilities when executed correctly, force the returner to either fair catch or return into the teeth of the coverage. No differently than any other defensive play, the object is to "contain" the ball carrier and prevent them from getting outside the coverage. This is known as "containment." There are a couple other facets too. When running downfield, it is necessary to avoid being pushed off course or out of bounds. Not because it takes you out of the play, but because it delays your arrival at the returner. Again, top speed allows Foster to beat the angle of the guy attempting to slow him by redirecting his path downfield. Additionally, once he has arrived downfield, the gunner must "pinch" inward toward the location of the returner so as to "contain" and direct his path toward the coverage. Yet again, speed makes this so much easier. If Foster can run around the edge and still arrive to pinch in at the right spot at the right time, he has done his job perfectly. Finally, if everything goes to plan, Foster might be able to arrive at his spot early enough to pop the returner just as he catches the ball, or at least slow his initial start enough to allow the slower coverage guys to make the tackle. In the best case, Foster may even make the tackle. Regardless of the blocking scheme on any return, if you have the speed and therefore can outrun the blockers, you will most likely disrupt the return enough to allow the other guys to clean-up.

Appreciate this team and season

Great post Red! You share my sentiments exactly. I'll add that earlier this year we had to read through posts calling for Beane and McDermott to be fired, as well. Now it seems to be all about firing Daboll. I've been attending Bills games since 1963 and the Bills fan base has always been like this. Those of us old-timers remember them calling for Lou Saban to be fired and Jack Kemp to be cut as they guided us to two championships. Coaches and players always have called the Bills fan base "passionate" but I have never heard us called "wise" or "intelligent." We're very lucky on this board. We have a dozen or so very wise and intelligent fans that are extremely well informed. But as a microcosm of Bills fandom, we also have a huge number of the above mentioned passionate loons. It might be worse among the younger fans nationally, but I think it's just Buffalo fans here. That's why WGR employs the nuts on-the-air. It works in the WNY market. In my eyes, it's a shame. It isn't going to change though. I agree that it would be nice to have fans simply enjoy the successes and the growth of this good football team. It's just not in their DNA. -
NFL Black Monday - Coaching Changes
clayboy54 replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While you lament about coaching in Washington and Dallas, let's not forget the other black hole for coaches... NY Giants. Only Tom Coughlin and Bill Parcells had success there and that likely won't change anytime soon. There's really only one type of coach that can win there. A very head-strong, take-no-prisoners kind of personality. The only guy I can think of today like that is Gregg Williams. They'll probably hire Doug Marrone. -

Kris absolutely deserves a solid chance someplace. Maybe working under Jerry would give him a better chance for success. Certainly, he'd have the roster to win now. -

Bills' mishandling of the CB position
clayboy54 replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Funny how a few weeks ago some people were calling for Levi Wallace's head. Now, its "oh my God, he's hurt!" Giuseppe says the position was mishandled. In fact as Bandit and Gunner have said, you can't have 75 guys on the roster. Somebody had to be exposed Sunday. Managing an NFL roster is clearly not as easy as we all make it seem. Especially with the bipolar fanbase. -

You absolutely do if you want to compete if your starter goes out for a quarter or a game or two. -

You have to assume they’re holding out hope that The light finally goes on for Foster. It might be too late for that now. We’ll see. -

Sure, as a 3rd developmental guy. You do need a vet backup. A lot depends on where some of the former starters end up across the league. As Hapless said, it comes down to fit and willingness to not be considered to be the starter. -

You might have seen Barkley’s audition for 2020. Not nearly good enough. There are a lot of options for backup QB coming up. One of them will likely be our choice. You can be sure it will not be a rookie though.
