  1. I disagree a bit. I am no Canadian apologist but a lot of good medical discoveries have originated in Canada and then the US has taken it and expanded upon it. I am certain the opposite is also true but Canada (as well as many other countries) do not have the heavy oversight of the FDA and are able to perform clinical research on drugs. devices, and procedures that would face significant delays with FDA approval. Here's a few: Breakthrough cancer discovery Edmonton Protocol - islet cell transplant for diabetes Engineered cell therapy trial for lung disease
  2. That's a good analogy. If I got a ticket for going 56 in a 55, I would be as surprised as I was last night for getting bumped from that particular concert for passing a doobie. If I had been at a Raffi show, I would expect to be nailed for passing a bone.
  3. It could have been me if that was 20 years ago. That stopped when I started competing in 10Ks and triathlons.
  4. I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber. The Dude abides.
  5. To clarify my OP and address some feedback: I no longer smoke anything but I don't care if others do. I didn't get lippy with the RMC staff - I laughed in disbelief and asked why he picked me out. That was it and then we walked right out the gate with him following. I was shocked as I have never been tossed from anywhere in my life. The police that were there at Innsbrook from my perspective were fine - I spoke with a few of them outside the venue before I went in and they were engaging. The RMC rent-a-cops were over-zealous and that was my point of the post. If you go there, that may be something to expect. I shouldn't have put myself in that situation and I am surprised it became a situation at that concert. I am unsure if they tossed the dancing guy and girl but I saw them speak to them and move them out of the aisle. I never saw the dancers later but they does not confirm they were tossed...but I wouldn't be surprised. A little less aggressiveness by the rent-a-cops would be appreciated. Yeah, I know they're doing their jobs but the crowd was easygoing and did not warrant this craziness. IMO, the impact of the heavy-handedness of the rent-a-cops can also spread to a general perception of the police as well.
  6. Indiscriminate from the standpoint in that they could have nabbed any number of people within a small radius of us at the show but they snagged us. If we were the only ones doing this, then it isn't indiscriminate. Now, perhaps they had their eye on us and were targeting us and waiting for us to do something but I doubt it. Most likely, they were snooping around and just happened to be in the area and see my wife smoking and passing it to me (btw - I wasn't smoking) and nabbed us. Obviously (due to others that I saw being excorted out the gate), they were sending other staff into crowd areas to boot people. At that show, they could have stood blindfolded anywhere within the crowd and have a 50% chance to nab a smoker by reaching a hand out. You may be right about it being safer going to the port-a-johns...as I said, I wasn't smoking so I didn't consider it. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. My point of the thread is that there is a number of hard-core police wannabes on the security staff at those shows so beware. I had been there about a month ago and didn't notice the same situation. Perhaps this attitude was beefed up for this show but, just-in-case, be aware the next time you go. Maybe next show the security staff will be standing on stools outside the port-a-john vents.
  7. As expected, a bunch of people were smoking the evil weed throughout the crowd. We declined a few times when jays were passed our way. The one time my wife takes a hit and I am passing it to the next person, one of the RMC staff in their official red outfit stealthily descends on us and tells us we have to leave...if not, he is going to call the cops on his walkie-talkie. I looked at him and laughed but he had that look of trying to make everything right in the world and was too serious for screwing around with. I protested somewhat but he kept reiterating how he could arrest me. So, he walked us out of the place and we turned the corner and watched the rest of the show outside the gates just beyond the beer tent. Us and a bunch of the other scofflaws that they targeted. Some other people were dancing in the VIP tent area aisles (right in front of where we were standing before we got tossed) and they made them sit down or they were going to toss them. They weren't in anyone's way as everyone was standing. Sheeesh!
  8. I know some Richmond area residents have been talking about attending concerts at Innsbrook. My wife and I were tossed out of the RatDog/moe show tonight about halfway through RatDog (bummer...right during Playing in the Band). Although the place is crawling with cops, they have a bunch of Niedermeyers on RMC (event services company that staffs the events) and they were moving through the crowd and tossing people indiscriminately for whatever was against policy. I saw several other people get tossed around the same time as us. FYI if you're going.
  9. There were only 3 different food vendors when I was there last month but most people aren't there for the food anyway. I saw a whole bunch of flasks and other snuck-in liquor. I also caught two busts there last year by the overzealous Henrico cops. But I'll be there this Wed for Weir and moe.
  10. Would someone use this if they did not have a programmable thermostat? When we know are not going to be in the house in the summer (work, vacation, etc.), we set the thermostat quite a bit higher so the A/C does not come on very often. When we arrive home, it's back to a normal setting. I expect that programming it very carefully saves us more than $6/month.
  11. If you have Verizon, call them up and have them move your bill from Directv to Verizon - you save $6/month.
  12. Ditto - excess protein is not only unnecessary, it is harmful. I am not going to put all of the links in here but there are plenty to look up - no more than 12-15% of your calories should be protein...the higher end if you are a professional athlete or in serious training. Excess protein can deprive an athlete of more efficient fuel and can lead to dehydration. High-protein diets increase the water requirement necessary to eliminate the nitrogen through the urine. I am doing some serious training right now for a triathlon and staying on top of my diet and can vouch for these recommendations as far as increasing & maintaining my muscle tone.
  13. Some newer, some older but though the artists may be known, these albums are not mainstream: All Rebel Rockers - Michael Franti River of Time - Jorma Kaukonen VIII - Stone Coyotes A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren Sleepless - Peter Wolf
  14. Have you considered private school? I was curious and noticed there were a few in and around Hemet.
  15. I can't top this...but blow 'em away.
  16. At the last minute, I decided a couple of weeks ago to renew my tickets. I decided to call the Bills last Friday (April 17) and see if I could relocate my seats. After I found that I could not, I continued to talk about the Bills with the rep and asked about their renewals and he said that the economy is tough and they are about 80%. A 20% decline in season tickets must have some repercussions. Perhaps this explains a few things such as another game in Toronto. However, ineptitude breeds discord and even if the economy was not messed up, there would have been a bunch of non-renewals.
  17. Went to C'ville last night...good times. Haynes plays an outstanding guitar but it's still missing something without Jerry. Nonetheless, the old men put on a heck of a show. They played from 8-11:45 with a 45 min break. I picked up a great parking-lot t-shirt: "Still Better Than Phish" on the front and "AARP Tour" with the 2009 tour locations underneath. Sometimes the Dead shows are like the Bills' game experience: the game might not be tremendous but the experience (people, happenings, etc.) make the whole thing a fun time.
  18. Yeah, that....plus he didn't change his diet after getting type II diabetes. I am mapping out my strategy for driving and parking at the Charlottesville show on Wed. night. I can not leave Richmond until around 5 and don't want to be late.
  19. Relocated WNYs in central VA: Wegmans' Fredericksburg store opens in June. A source from a title company told me they are looking at three sites in Richmond. It can't come soon enough.
  20. only one year left
  21. Gotta agree with this. But a big concern remains about Jauron's game planning and game-day decision making. Witness how BB owned him the last home game against the Pats. But you can go ahead and select from several other games with similar poor coaching decisions. I place hope that he is learning from his mistakes and taking a different approach in '09.
  22. I have changed my position somewhat. I am not willing to bear the entire cost but I am willing to split with someone. Here is my link in the TBD Trading Post. Great seats: Sec 113, row 6, aisle seats 1-2 I am only able to attend a few games a year due to my schedule. I am sure I can work out something amenable to someone...but it has to be done quickly as time is running out.
  23. Michelle (Tony's wife) from 24.
  24. It seems that technology may be changing this perspective. I know that a number of those where I work, who are just out of school, will download the paper to their phone/pda. It's very portable and convenient - they can read it when they're on the can. And delete it when they're done - no trash...no recycling. If more and more younger people accept that as the norm, eventually the printed copy becomes unnecessary because it's only the "old-timers" that want it. I am not saying this is something right around the corner. But, those papers/companies/people that have a plan to address this change might end up surviving. Take the wayback clock 20-25 years ago - whoever thought they we would all be walking around with our phones?
  25. Veteran concertgoer - saw Michael Franti & Spearhead at the National in Richmond last night and I recommend 'em if you get a chance. Tight band, great show, crowd was up the whole time. An odd sight - even the dour security guards were moving around to the music and I saw the guards near me clapping for the band at the end of the show. I saw them a few years ago at Allgood but they have moved it up several notches since then. Anybody else familiar with them?
