1. I think the Gandy move was for the best. He's doing much better, like it or not, at guard than he was being bum-rushed by elite D-Ends.

No one can compare to Peters. Who'dathunk that a Tight End would become a phenomenal NFL tackle?

    400th Post. Woo.

Actually Gandy's stats in terms of sacks allowed are worse this year then they were last year from snap stats.com.

In terms of alternatives here's a short list of some free agents Gs and link to their stats:

    LG Eric Steinbach

    LG Kris Dielman

    LG/RG/C Sean Mahan

    LG Derrick Dockery

    RG/C Andre Gurode

    RG Cosey Coleman

spot starter at RG Montrae Holland

I personally think getting a guy like Dielman and drafting Justin Blalock with our top pick be a good plan of attack as just see us shelling out the money for Steinbach but have a feeling we might end up with Mahan and maybe draft a guy like Manuel Ramirez in the 3rd instead. I'd also be in favor of also getting a guy like Holland to compete to start and prefer over a guy like Mertz and be an improvement over Preston.

  2. We are #10 to #13 depending on the tie breaker and what Green Bay does tonight and if SF wins in OT.

    #10-13

    GB 7-8 (@CHI)

    Atl 7-9

    BUF 7-9

    SF 6-9 (@DEN, OT)

It's actually looking like 13 because of strength of schedule as San Francisco and Green Bay had a weaker one then we did heading into today and were playing weaker teams then the Ravens as well.

In terms of recent history here's who been taken at 13:

2006: 1 13 Kamerion Wimbley Browns LB Florida State

    2005: 1 13 Jammal Brown Saints T Oklahoma

2004: 1 13 Lee Evans Bills WR Wisconsin

    2003: 1 13 Ty Warren Patriots DT Texas A&M

2002: 1 13 Donte Stallworth Saints WR Tennessee

2001: 1 13 Marcus Stroud Jaguars DT Georgia

  3. love to see Bills get their hands on the big/tall receiver they desperately need. the current group of smurfs only shine when everything thing goes as perfectly planned. a tall/physical receiver like jarrett with good hands is ALWAYS open. rule of thumb is WRs don't get taken high in the draft so with the bills drafting somewhere near the middle this time, i wonder if anyone knows where jarrett falls. I mean just look at how important the 6'5" 230 rookie WR colston has been for saints this year. i say draft the receiver and build the line through free agency... WRs can have an impact right away and the road is littlered with first round OLine busts (tony mandarich, gallery, our own mike williams, etc etc). anyone see a projection of the 2007 draft? i know it's early but maybe someone like kiper has put something together.

Assuming Calvin Johnson comes out, as well as Jarrett as both are juniors, Dwayne should be the 2nd WR off the board. In looking at recent drafts this is where the 2nd WRs were taken in recent drafts:

Round Pick Player Name Team College

2 36 Chad Jackson Patriots Florida

1 7 Troy Williamson Vikings South Carolina

1 7 Roy Williams Lions Texas

1 3 Andre Johnson Texans Miami (FL)

1 19 Ashley Lelie Broncos Hawaii

1 15 Rod Gardner Redskins Clemson

1 8 Plaxico Burress Steelers Michigan State

As evident WRs do get taken early but rarely do they make impacts as rookie. As much as I want Jarrett, he's my alternative choice if don't get Justin Blalock, to expect him to make an impact as a rookie is asking a lot. Either way I think if we end up picking in the 15-17 range as things seem to be going he could out of our reach. Of course we might have a shot at Jeff Samardzija and Dwayne Bowe who also have size with our top pick if miss out on Jarrett. Of course a lot depends on what we do in free agency mainly at LB and CB. I feel if we lose either Fletcher or Clements then our top pick should go to replacing either one with Patrick Willis and Buster Davis at the top of my lists at MLB and Leon Hall, Darrelle Revis, Marcus McCauley and Antoine Cason among the list of CB candidates.

  4. I don't think the Bills keep both of them. Which one is the better choice to keep? London is older but still playing at a high level. But he has Drew Rosenhaus for an agent. Could Spikes slide inside if Fletcher leaves? That would give us Crowell-Spikes-Ellison at LB. Could we find a suitable replacement for Nate? He's good, but I don't consider him a real shut-down corner. Should the Bills overpay him to stay? If you're Marv which one do you keep?

I could care less who Fletcher's agent is. To me it's obvious you keep Nate, as for one he is younger and a far better player at his position then Fletcher is at is. Not only that but our depth at CB is considerably weaker then it as at LB. I haven't studied free agent LBs in great detail but one name someone else brought up is Kawicka Mitchell. Also the draft has some strong options in either Patrick Willis or Buster Davis if looking for someone in Round 1.

  5. The site will be constantly upgraded when the off-season starts.  Generally it is the best draft site on the net, with great player write-ups and lots of information.  The mocks are just like any other...hit and miss, but fun to look at if your into that stuff.  As I said earlier, the Buffalo pick will probably change once his new draft comes out.

    878610

Even though they haven't been the same without Joel Bauchbaum's passing PFW's final mock was scary good this past year. I mean they almost hit of the first 14 picks they hit on 12 and only reversed picks 5 and 6, had they not done so they would of been an amazing 14 of 14.

Here's who they forecasted and how things went:

    Link to the mock

  6. 1ST Round pick OLB Pauk Posluszny. A great Penn State linebacker.

2nd Round pick CB Marcus McCauley. 6-1 CB with speed.

3rd Round pick G Nathan Bennet. Depth at O-line.

    Free Agent signings

    TE- Eric Johnson

    DT-Rod Coleman

    878071

McCauley is arguably the best or 2nd best CB in the entire draft, I highly doubt he'll be available with our 2nd pick. We don't need depth at O-line we need starters IMHO and already have the depth in Preston and Mertz.

  7. The D is not good in the clutch. It can't stop anyone whn you need it.

    To me, that's the thing.

    878061

The O also has had troubles inside the redzone and sustaining drives and/or killing the clock when needed. As we shouldn't have to count on the D to stop the opposition in their final drive in order to win. I'm not blaming the O completely for the loss yesterday but they definately played a part in having to settle for 5 field goals.

  8. Are they? Really? I know they told us fans that Ngata wasn't a good fit for our new defense, but I think they not drafting him was because they were more sold (surest pick, I mean) on Whitner than anything else.

Remember that we went after Ryan Pickett in the offseason and the Packers beat us in that race. Pickett is listed at 322 pounds in the NFL page (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/235235). By all acounts not a small guy.

I'm sure after the end results of this year run defense, we'll see a big body and talented (hopefully), inserted in the middle of the line

    878056

Size alone does not define a guy as a run stuffer. Look no further then Sam Adams, he's as big as they come but classify him more of a penetrating/pass rushing type DT then a guy you can cound on to stop the run.

  9. I, too, call bull :D on this.

Let's look at the list of improvements by losing to get a higher draft pick:

    A) Get a guy at #10 who has just as much chance to bust as a guy at #24.

    B) Pay $15M more in guaranteed salary-cap-hit money for the privilege.

    C) More difficult to sign --> late to camp --> behind the 8-ball --> lose an entire year.

I will continue 'til my dying day describing how this philosophy sucks.

    877922

We wouldn't just be drafted 14 spots higher in Round 1 but 14 spots higher in each Round. As stated many a time a draft about the best collection of players. That said I am not going to be actively rooting for the Bills to lose for the sake of better draft position. All I care is the team improves on it's performance from last week, win or lose.

  10. I thought I heard yesterday that we were leading the league in fewest points allowed over the last six weeks......

    878052

I also heard that we were 2nd in the league for sacks by our DEs. I truly think the D is still the strength of this team compared to the offense. Though our special teams is probably the best of our three units but has taken a small step back from years past.

  11. I see lots of people calling for Gandy's head for his play this season. Well then what does that say about Preston's play?

Yesterday whenever McGahee was stuffed...guess who I saw at the bottom of the pile, on his face everytime? Duke Preston! He gets owned on running plays and I don't know why people are all over Gandy (besides his drive killing holding penalties) Preston seems like the weakest lineman IMO, after him I think i'd have to say Fowler.

What do you guys think about Preston as our Right Guard?

    878049

I think we have to improve both LG and RG. If it were up to me we'd sign someone like Vince Manuwai in free agency to replace Gandy and draft Justin Blalock to replace Chris Villarial. As let's not forget that Preston is only playing because CV can't and nothing more then a backup to this point in his career.

  12. What's the prevailing feeling among you tards?

I think the Defense is actually WORSE than the offense. No tackling. Poor schemes. Lack of LB talent.

Considering all the picks Marv wasted on the D, it sure doesn't look much better.

What a sickening loss that was. Yet again, everything's falling into place and the team chokes like Paris Hilton after a night of coke-induced whoring.

    878008

How can you say the D isn't any better? We rank 12th in the league in points against (19.5 points per game). Yes, we're still weak against the rush (29th) but good against the pass (7th) and 18th overall in yards. In comparison last season we gave up 22.9 points per game, ranked 31st against the rush, 19th against the pass and 29th overall.

The offense has improved as well but think it's more noticable because you can see the improvement in JP's play more easily then you can for an entire group ie the D.

  13. lets assume we keep our key FA, except NC and get 3 quality FA starters.  FA: CB,. OG ,DT.  Then get a LB, OT,RB in first 3 rounds.  Finish up with a WR, FB, and another LB.  With that offseason and improvement of our young guys we should be able to get 10 wins and make the playoffs. Then we are 1 or 2 playmakers away from a top 6 team.  This is a critical offseason .  We need to get much better talent or fan support will plummet.  Given a sellers market we need to target and be aggressive in FA .  By the way the RB needs to be fast and shifty to supplament a solid but not super WM.

    877650

Here's a list of the expected UFA available after this offseason. Outside of Nate and Samuel there are few starters out there. The only guys that jump out at me are David Macklin and Tory James.

    Bauman, Rashad: UFA Bengals

    Buchanon, Phillip UFA Buccaneers

    Cash, Chris UFA Falcons

    Clements, Nate UFA Bills

    Cox, Torrie UFA Buccaneers

    Fisher, Travis UFA Rams

    Fletcher, Jamar UFA Lions

    Groce, DeJuan UFA Saints

    Hood, Roderick UFA Eagles

    James, Tory UFA Bengals

    James, William UFA Eagles

    Jimoh, Ade UFA Redskins

    Lehan, Michael UFA Dolphins

    Macklin, David UFA Cardinals

    Manning, Jr., Ricky UFA Bears

    McCleon, Dexter UFA Texans

    Poteat, Hank UFA Jets

    Samuel, Asante UFA Patriots

    Sanders, Lewis UFA Texans

    Starks, Duane UFA Raiders

    Tate, Robert UFA Cardinals

    Thomas, Kiwaukee UFA Bills

    Walker, Frank UFA Giants

    Walls, Lenny UFA Chiefs

    Williams, Jimmy UFA Seahawks

    Wright, Kenny UFA Redskins

  14. Plus, teams didn't have to take long to try to adapt their defenses to Young's running ability because they just used the anti-Vick gameplan. Young is just harder to defend because he's more dangerous as a passer (though he still has a long way to go).

    877469

Young's numbers compare favorable to McNabb's rookie season. Of course time will tell how good he will end up being but I have to give him credit he finds ways to win late in games be it at the college level or pro level.

  15. For some reason I just dont understand this. Some people are saying that Ralph pays out of pocket to sign players ... I always thought that the league gives each team the ammount of money that the salary cap is set at. Example: if the cap was set at 100 million for the year, then the team would get 100 million from the league. Is this not true?

    875926

I hope you're being sarcastic. As yes, Ralph pays out of his own pocket to sign players. The cap is only a figuere put out by the league as the "maximum" amount of money they can spend on their team in a given season. I put maximum in quotes due to issues like prorated signing bonuses and other bonuses that don't go against the cap and what not.

  16. 2007 Offseason plan

Well I know the Bills season is still far from over, but it never hurts to look ahead to next year, especially when you are stuck at work with nothing better to do.  So here’s what I’m thinking as an offseason plan for the Bills.

You've brought up quite a bit of RFAs to sign. Let's not forget that we tried to sign 2 last offseason and got denied when their original teams matched our offers so to think their easy pickings isn't the case. Not only that but if we do sign them often there's compensation involved.

Case in point Michael Turner was originally a 5th Round pick and that be the very least we'd likely have to give up for him which we don't have right now do to the Hargrove trade.

Wilford, while I like him, would cost at least a 4th Rounder and am sure Jacksonville would match an offer he gets being he's their best WR.

Graham would be a great signing but Robert Royal's showed some things the last few weeks with his ability to find the end zone. I also think Johnson will be available as Vernon Davis is back to playing and as mentioned can't see the 49ers trying to retain him.

OGs: I have a short list that includes: Vince Manuwai, Kris Dielman

Montrae Holland, Sean Mahan, Cosey Coleman and Andre Gurode in no particular order.

DEs: I'd love to re-sign Kelsay but think he'll be lost in the shuffle to retain Clements, Fletcher and Lindell. I'd love Charles Grant but he'll likley get a bigger deal then Kelsay and not someone we could afford. One guy I have my eye on is Chris Cooper, who is similar to Denney in that can line up at DT too and probably best as a rotation player.

DTs: Smith actually was cut by Houston and back in Tennessee playing DT. He's not a bad player and warrants some consideration but with Kyle Williams showing he can fill in at spots think a guy like Ian Scott would cost less and is younger and a better fit.

LBs: I think Kawika Mitchell be a fine replacement for Fletcher but think we'd miss Fletcher's leadership and Mitchell might be one of the more heavily pursued LBs in free agency with his youth.

CBs: Nate's my #1 priority this offseason if we lose him I think it's a forgone conclusion we'll be taking a CB in the 1st Round of the draft.

I agree with most of your draft feelings except us having a 5th Rounder again because of the Hargrove trade.

  17. Good run-down on both players. I think Washington could be a tough, effective player if he has finally wised up and gets past the injury. I think he's wised up. Henry could be stellar if he had half a brain or half an ounce of gravel in his guts.  No cure for that lack.

But if it is so that he is persona non grata with CIN - likely - it makes for an interesting situation. He was their 3rd rounder in 2005.  So he has zero FA options.

Just a guess, but I could see him peddled for a 4th rounder this April with a 5th or 6th pick in '08. Who would bite is the question...

    875841

The Raiders come to mind with them having guys who seemingly want out in Randy Moss and Jerry Porter. The Vikings and Chiefs also lack a quality WRs off the top of my head.

  18. Kelley Washington is unrestricted next season - but is on IR with a hamstring. He was a desirable RFA, but carried a 3rd round comp cost. AFAIK, his hamstring should recover.

Washington is a big receiver, throws blocks. College neck injury saw him fall in his draft,  and seems to have have grown out of the often-typical 20+ year-old athlete attitude.

Henry has great potential, 7 or so TDs, brilliant one game and a short-handing SOB the next. Plus off-field stuff. Ronnie Harmon-esque?

I watch these two play - just offering them up for consideration here, something to kick around...

Washington will get $$$ elsewhere if he's 100%, and Palmer has kept up tossing Henry's way but despite public support, I think he's through with him.

    875734

I've stated in another thread that Washington could be a cheap alternative if can't land a Drew Bennett. Granted he has a lot to prove to be #1 or #2 like Bennett is but like his upside more then Peerless Price.

I've liked Henry ever since he came out of West Virginia per this old thread of course I think it's too high of risk to invest a 3rd Round pick in im now that we've lost our 5th Rounder in acquiring Hargrove. I say that because he's been suspended once, the next time he gets one it be for a season and then be out of the league.

  19. I'm sorry but the saddest song in the entire world is that "Dear Mr. Jesus" song that little girl sings that they always seem to put on this time of year.....

It makes me cry EVERY fricken time I hear it

    873207

I do well with with that song until the lyric "Mr Jesus please tell me what to do and please don't tell my daddy that my mommy hits me too" then I just lose it.

In terms of the song that came to my mind was "After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young ironically because of a comedic movie (Shallow Hal).
