  1. I think they should make Nate the top-paid corner in the league. I don't think anything less would keep him around, and while I don't think it will ever be considered a "bargain", in a year or two with the cap increasing it will be eclipsed by new contracts. I don't know about anyone else, but potentially going into next season with McGee and Thomas/Youboty as our starting corners scares the crap out of me.

It definately scares me as McGee wasn't good enough to start this year and there's no guaranteeing Thomas be back either being he's also an UFA. In terms of Youboty all I have to say is he wasn't good enough to play dime CB to ask him to replace a Pro Bowl caliber CB like Nate is asking for trouble. If Nate is lost, and I hope to God he isn't, we had better draft someone in Round 1 to replace him or sign a veteran. The more and more I look at things a guy like Nick Harper might be a suitable replacement being he's been in the cover 2 and seems to be a strong tackler in looking at his stats.

  2. If the only improvement we make to our guards is signing Holland, we have had a failed off season. This is our biggest need by far, and I don't have to specify who we get for each position or where we draft, but we need to make getting the most guard improvement we can.

I agree but Holland's shown some pretty good stats when has had the chance to start. As he's only given up 5.5 sacks in 30 starts (52 games played) and committed 9 penalties. I think he'd be an ideal guy off the bench or security blanket if we draft a RG prospect who struggles.

  3. Here are three questions Crayonz might ask.

The case of the player who receives a KO... while being tackled around midfield he purposely fumbles the ball forward and it goes out of bounds at say, the 10 yard line without any other player touching it.

Which team gets the ball and where is it spotted? Is there a penalty? Lastly, is this something Mularkey would put into his 2007 playbook?

and crayonz thinks it's okay that he slept with his cousin, any other questions?

  4. leave it to that jerkoff tom jackson to get his facts wrong AGAIN. Espn has devolved into a sorry state full of cartoon characters and meathead ex-players who have no business getting on tv and actually talking. Im sick of the bills (even its individual players) getting no goddamn love ever (except from berman, the network's only saving grace).

If Berman was a saving grace he'd know Schobel was the one with the record. Truth be hold he's as big as a meat heahead ex player.

  5. The conclusion of the Jets/Pats half had me thinking about this... The Jet player was running on the field and trying to get as many yards as possible before the conclusion of the half. Now, if it was obvious that a player would not be able to get out of bounds before the clock expires, could that player purposely lateral the ball out of bounds before time expires in a half, thus stopping the clock? Anyone know the particulars on this one?

    From http://www.buccaneers.com/news/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=4096

    1. Amit Oberoi of Montreal, Quebec, Canada asks:

If time is running out of a game, and you are about to be tackled in bounds, are you allowed to lateral the ball (backwards, obviously) out of bounds? Will it be a penalty and an automatic 10 second runoff; I wouldn't see why. For the couple of yards you lose on a lateral, stopping the clock could be the difference between winning and losing.

Answer Man: Your suspicions are correct, Amit, and your game-saving gambit wouldn't work. The NFL obviously frowns on intentional fumbling - see the above 'Holy Roller' description - and has provisions for desperate acts such as these.

Rule 4-3-10 in the NFL rulebook condemns 'Actions to Conserve Time' and specifically mentions your suggestion. To wit:

A team is not permitted to conserve time inside of one minute of either half by committing any of the following acts: fouls by either team that prevent the snap (i.e., false start, encroachment, etc.), intentional grounding, an illegal forward pass thrown from beyond the line of scrimmage with the intent to conserve time, throwing a backward pass out of bounds with the intent to conserve time, and any other intentional foul that causes the clock to stop.

See? No go. Similarly, if the center was the first person to reach the spotted ball and he looked up to see the last few seconds running off the clock, he couldn't simply snap the ball before his team was set, hoping to draw a clock-stopping penalty. That would be the dreaded Action to Conserve Time.

The penalty, as you feared, includes a 10-second runoff. Again, here's how the rulebook puts it:

Penalty: Loss of five yards unless a larger distance penalty is applicable. When actions referred to above are committed by the offensive team with the clock running, officials will run 10 seconds off the game clock before permitting the ball to be put in play on the ready for the play signal. If the offensive team has timeouts remaining, it will have the option of using a timeout in lieu of a 10-second runoff...

And it goes on and on. But you get the point. Should you try this very risky intentional-fumble out of bounds, you would be slapped with a 10-second runoff and then the officials would start the clock again. Your only hope, I guess, is to heave the ball backwards as far as possible and hope a teammate can catch it.

    **

I know you mentioned a foward lateral but that would be considered an illegal foward pass and probably also result in time run off.

  6. Sorry, that's what I meant to say.

And it WAS Reich's fault for Norwood missing the FG. But it never should have come down to that.

I'd blame Kelly more then Reich for the missed FG. I can still see 12 seconds left on the clock but no attempt for another play, as don't care who's kicking a 47 yard FG isn't easy for any kicker.

  7. well, quite frankly, Jim IS the Hall of Fame QB and has a waaaayy more "manlier" reputation (boozing, partying, women) than the Preacher Man Frank Reich.

and how are you "not the biggest of Kelly fans"?!?!?!?

I'm not a fan of Kelly because of some of the things you mentioned and the God like status some fans give him. No doubt he was the best QB the Bills have ever had but to me he was feel was far overrated. Of course I feel most QBs are overrated (and probably why I have some ill feelings toward Kelly too) to begin with but that's another topic and have exhausted many posts about it in the past.

  8. CBS also said that with today's start, Pennington has the most playoff experience of any Jets QB EVER. Is that correct? More than Namath?

Namath only played in three playoff games with the Jets, two of which came in the year they beat the Colts. Infact over his 12 year NFL career he only lead the Jets to three seasons over .500 and is partly why many consider him vastly overrated.

  9. That's the first I've seen it today. Anyone see it??? Makes a reference to the Houston - Bills game.

    YEAH JIMBO.

It would have been far better had Frank Reich was in it being he was the QB of the comeback. I mean far be it from Kelly to avoid anymore time in the spotlight  Forgive me but I'm not the biggest of Kelly fans and while I had a chuckle at the commercial I think it could have been better.

  10. Remember Fred Taylor could have been our draft pick but we traded that pick to JAX for Rob Johnson

I doubt we would have drafted Taylor as we drafted Antowain Smith the year before and he was coming off a rookie season in which he gained 840 yards as the primary back up to Thurman Thomas. If we were to take anyone with pick 9 it likely would have been OT Tra Thomas or maybe LB Takeo Spikes.

  11. Interesting point, but remember that the Skins traded coles back to the jets for Santana Moss. So its not like they simply let him go or lost him. They got something very nice in return for him.

Ah but you forgot the Redskins originally gave up a 1st Rounder to acquire Coles (who the Jets packaged with their 1st Round pick to the Bears for the 4th overall pick in 2003 who turned out to be Dewayne Robertson. So the question is, was Santana Moss worth Lavernous Coles and Robertson (or conversely the player picked at #13 who turned out to be Ty Warren because the Bears then traded the pick to New England for pick 14 (which we gave them for Drew Bledsoe) and the 20th pick in the 6th Round (which was later traded to Jacksonville and turned out to be OT Marques Ogden -who was last seen on the Bills practice squad in 2005).

Judging performance in retrospect (Ellison, Pennington, and also Denney in your example) is a whole lot different than before the team is complete. With very few exceptions, you don't know for sure if your draft pick will actually be able to compete at the NFL level.

Draft picks have pros and cons for a team: + = less expensive, longer rights to the player, sometimes more up-side - = will take time to develop and may never get to starting NFL level.

For a critical position like the starting O-Line, I'd rather have a known quantity than a gamble, even though you get the gamble for longer, and cheaper. That being said, if none of your draft picks develop, you're also dead in the water.

I'm happy to sacrifice draft picks for need positions, but there is something to be said for Beerball's point about it being a distraction if the deals rarely if ever come through. I'd like to believe the Bills are leaving "no stone unturned" looking for talent, and aren't neglecting other possibilities, in which case I applaud them for pursuing RFAs.

I'll admit I used hindsight to evaluate the gains for losing out on Wells and Israel Idonije. Yet I agree that signing Wells would not have been a bad move for our 6th Rounder but again in retrospect it's maybe a better thing we didn't based on what we got in return for not signing Wells. As my first reaction was Reggie Wells: When we first signed him an offer sheet I thought it was a good idea. As it give us a starting LG at the cost of a 6th Round pick.

  12. Reality tv like all tv comes in many forms. Most of which is just unwatchable. I generally watch The Amazing Race, The Apprentice and Survivor but the latter is becoming really boring as it seems to be the same thing year in and year out and down right predictable. The truth is most reality program is as fake as the other shows on the air too. As it seem to be a haven for wannabe actors and or people looking out for their best interests and nothing more. I just watch it to see how desperate and pitiful some of them are. I mean the part of American Idol I enjoy the most is to see the characters who can't sing more then the actual competition. As while maybe one or two may really think they can sing I think most just go on the show in hopes to be the next William Hung.

  13. I would love him if he wasnt dumb ass rocks...having said that you dont have to be smart to take on two defenders...and at his size he should be able to do that....

I still think Robaire Smith is the favorite if we go DT in Free Agency.....

I'm not sure why Smith's getting all this praise except for his size as the Titans rush defense was actually worse then ours this year. As it gave up 144.6 rushing yards per game compared to our 140.9. They also gave up 7 more rushing TDs then we did. Give me Ian Scott of the Bears instead as they gave up 99.9 rushing yards per game and only 7 TDs.

  14. You know I always read and hear about people criticizing the idea of going after RFAs because a team would have to give up a draft pick. Personally, I think RFAs for second day picks, or even late first day picks is in some cases a better idea than gambling on a rookie right out of college.

Now hear me out on this for a second. You know as well I as I do there is no sure thing when it comes to the NFL Draft. It's a crap shoot, especially on day 2. In my opinion it is actually a safer bet to spend those second day picks on RFAs who already have NFL experience and you have a better idea of what you are getting in a player because he's already seen gametime. The only downside I see to spending picks on a RFA is they may have less potential value since they have already been in the league for 3 seasons.

NFL.com should have the RFA pick compensation values listed sometime after the playoffs so we'll look into this a little bit more then.

What do you think? RFAs good idea/bad idea

On the whole I would say that RFAs are a bad idea. As look no further then the Washington Redskins who are a team very willing to sign RFAs and seemingly have little success. As here's a short list of guys that they've gotten and results:

Brandon Lloyd: cost them a 2nd Round pick and produced 23 receptions last year.

Lavarneous Coles: cost them a 1st Round pick and is now playing with the Jets.

Chad Morton: cost them a 5th Round pick and is now a New York Giant

Matt Bowen: cost them a 5th Round pick and is now a Buffalo Bill.

Granted one could play devils advocate and say that the Bills did well when we signed Rian Lindell as a RFA a few years ago, but of course might have been fortunate that he didn't end up costing us anything because he received a low tender from the Seahawks and entered the league as an undrafted free agent. Of course let's look at some other RFAs that we attempted to sign last offseason but failed on:

Reggie Wells: When we first signed him an offer sheet I thought it was a good idea. As it give us a starting LG at the cost of a 6th Round pick. Yet in looking back maybe it was a good thing we didn't get him. As 1)He got shifted to RT by the Cardinals this season and did quite well as gave up 2.5 sacks the entire season but was also flagged for 10 penalties. 2)In comparison we ended up drafting Keith Ellison with our 6th Round pick who showed to be a good special teams player and a better then expected spot starter at LB. 3)Of course one also say if we got Wells we would have never drafted Brad Butler in the 5th Round or conversly Terrance Pennington or Aaron Mertz in the 7th Round. 4)Pennington's numbers compared to Wells were pretty good in Terrance gave up 2.0 sacks in 9 starts this year and only flagged for 1 penalty. Yet at the same time probably costs less against the cap then Wells would.

Israel Idonije: Who? While it would not have cost the Bills anything to sign him because like Lindell was a low tendered RFA undrafted free agent we likely would have not re-signed Ryan Denney, who agreed to terms only after the Bears matched the contract the Bill offered Idonije. In looking at the numbers it looks like Denney was the better choice. As he's making about 750k more per year but well worth it how well he produces.

  15. I think this year is pretty much a wash for AY. If we lose Clements and Thomas, we'll be expecting a lot from him next year.

It might have been a wash but am still perplexed why Coy Wire was playing CB against Baltimore with McGee on the bench when we could of been giving Ashton a look or two.

  16. Watched the entire PSU/UT game yesterday and for that matter the entire Nittany Lion career of Paul Posluszny, I would LOVE to see this guy in a Bills uniform come April.

Having said that, I leave this to some better experts here on the board:

    1. What do you think of Posluszny fitting in the Cover 2 scheme? Too small?

    2. How high is Posluszny on the draft boards?

    3. With Fletcher most likely leaving, and considering Paul Posluszny's speed, I think he would be a great fit and a fan favorite for years to come.

    1. If I've learned anything about the cover 2 this year it's about discipline. As it seems as long as players are smart enough to fill their gaps and not stray they can be very successful. Also strong tackling helps as well which definately fits Posluszny's mold. In terms of size, The Colts OLBs are quite smaller both being in the 6-0 228# mold, the Bucs aren't much bigger at 6-1 230# and of course the Bears' are a little bigger at 6-1 240# so one could say at 6-2 238# Paul would fit right in.

    2. NFL Draftcountdown.com ranks him as the best OLB in the draft and #7 overall.

    3. If Fletcher leaves then we should be looking at MLBs and the best according to NFL Draftcountdown.com that be Patrick Willis who ranks as the #11th overalll.

  17. every time i see old qbs like marino and elway in commercials i always wonder "wheres jimbo?!"

just caught him in the new "man law" commercial

good to see #12 on tv, i just like having him around

You must have missed his pyramid scheme commercials that used to run late at night.

  18. Looking at a few profiles out there, I am liking Ben Grubbs from Auburn more and more for the OG position. Former DE and TE who is athletic but big and nasty. They say he could slide into the first round. Maybe trade back to the end of the first to draft Grubbs and pick up another second round pick as well?

    1st- Grubbs

    2nd- DT

    2nd- RB/WR/OL/CB

Grubbs might be among the top 3 OGs available meaning we might be able to land him in Round 2. To be honest I don't like the idea of trading down.

Steinbach and L. Davis are both unrealistic, IMO.

A player who we could look at is Ryan Lilja, a starting OG on the Colts line.

Lilja started 5 games this season, while he might be more affordable, I'm not sure we should be targetting RFAs as we didn't do tell well doing it last year when went 0 for 2.

I think our best option is going to be to draft a OT-OG and maybe let him play guard for us.

It sounds like your describing Justin Blalock.

  19. Jarrett's good (damn good, really), but he is a pretty big talker. The taunting on the 62-yard TD wasn't necessary and very TO-like, but he'd be a great gamer for the NFL.

Despite what Keyshawn says, I think Jarrett's ready.

I didn't watch the game sohave to ask was he lined up against CB Leon Hall (whose arguably the best CB in the draft)? Even if he wasn't you have to love a stat line of 11 receptions 204 yards 18.5 yards per catch and 2 TDs.
