  1. That is a very civil answer to my rather snarky post. Thank you for that.

It's all good Graybeard, and all part of Stadium Wall Billiever therapy! :D

Last year, the team started off poorly and ended strong. The beginning of this season, the strong performances continued, which made people very optimistic. Now with the recent string of bad games, nobody knows what to think. Nobody wants to believe that next season will be yet another disappointment. Injuries and lack of depth are the excuses, which seem valid. Only time will tell.

It seems as though the team is on its way to better days, but we have all been burned too many times to be too optimistic. There are people who want to blame Fitz's bad passing skills, blame the poor drafting, blame the loss of Evans and Hangartner, blame the coaches, blame a defense that couldn't stop the run very well even before the injuries, etc. I believe the draft will add depth, most key players will be re-signed (not sure about Stevie), they will find a graceful way to remove Edwards as DC, and next year the Bills will still be relevant at Christmas time. I don't say that just to be blindly optimistic, I think I really believe it.

This is pretty much where I'm at too, but I don't trust ownership to follow up with key FA signings and contract extensions. Overall I'm cautiously optimistic, but as you point out, it's hard to Billive after being burned so many times.

  2. :thumbsup::worthy:

It take guts to tell people to stop living in the past. I have been a Bills fan for about 30 years, so I have been through bad, good, and bad stretches. That was then, this is now. I also think the game has evolved in the past 15 years, so it is getting harder to compare the players of that era to the players of today. Every year at this time I start paying attention to mock drafts, start researching college players that will declare for the draft, and start looking at the Bills roster to see who is worth keeping and who will likely be replaced. I also still watch all the games with my son, because that is what I like to do on Sunday afternoons.

Not living in the past as much as trying to predict the future. The central question is: have we bottomed out? If so, we could be in the SB hunt in a surprisingly short time. Or are we going to limp on at 7-9 or so into the forseeable future? Consensus seems to be the latter.

Given that there's only 32 of these jobs in the world, does this give creedence to our guy?

I think so. As many here have noted, his mechanics have changed dramatically since the big shot he took to the mid-section -official NFL Injury status be damned. He's using so much more of his body to launch throws than earlier in the season and his accuracy has taken a big dip as a result. Add to this, the uncanny amount of drops by a depleted WR corp, an ever-changing OL due to injuries and the loss of F-Jax, and it's no wonder his play is slipping.

We know he's smarter than the average bear, can quickly read defenses and commands the respect of the huddle. These are not attributes to be taken lightly, even if he isn't Peyton Brady (sic).

I think this season is lost -again..- but I'm not ready to throw in the towel on him. Certainly, we've had much worse ranked QB's this century. Draft a future QB? Sure! But IMHO, chasing Ryan out of town is necessary. I believe we can win with him at the helm and a better supporting cast.

All these rankings are highly suspect, but agree with your point. We have much greater positional needs right now to be chasing a QB when our is average at worst. Fix the O-line and Fitz will do better. Fix the D to take pressure off the passing game and Fitz will do better. Bring in a WR with sure hands and able to get separation on long routes and Fitz will do better. So many needs. Not defending Fitz, just pointing out where our priorities should be IMO.

  4. You can relate?

Is it possible that your anxiety and emotion is too intense for him?

I ask because I know there are people who don't like watching Bills games with me because I'm way too amped.

My wife, kids and dog have all learned to find someplace else to be Sunday afternoons . . . not sure why I take it so seriously, it's grown men playing a game that I have no direct or indirect control over whatsoever. I think we all need therapy.

  5. Different systems, different schemes, better players around them . . . of course they can do better. Player success depends on many things, only elite players make their own destiny. If any of the three you mention were elite players, they would have shown with the Bills regardless of other factors.

  6. What we all want to be is the, and I hate to say it, Green Bay Packers. Just think how far off we are from that. And believe me living here just about all my friends are Packer fans, so I root for the other team every week.

That's what I thought this post was about at first.

Nah, I would have been happy with 8-8 this year, and an improving outlook. That's more the point.

I'll feel better if we can win at least ONE of our home games to finish 6-10. But not much.

  7. Great, anaother thread on hypotheticals that can never be proven.

One clear fact is that Buddy Nix went into this season with no experienced, veteran depth.

Curious decisions were made to not bring in more OLB help, to cut Jeff Hangartner, to trade Lee Evans. and to start the season with a rookie (Hairston) as the swing OT.

Those decisions are on Buddy Nix.

We are $20M under the salary cap - that decision is on Ralph, Overdorf, and Littman.

Injuries are part of the game. Yes, we would be a better team if all of our starters were still in the he line up. Sorry, not gonna play "what if".

Not sure if I put cutting Hangartner and Evans on Nix. Those may have been money decisions.

    Agree with everything else 100%.

BTW, add chandler and Byrd to the list of quality players out of the lineup . . . we are so screwed against SD . . .

  8.

Buffalo used the 11th overall selection of the 2009 draft on Maybin, then rarely let him on the field, criticized him relentlessly in public, then waived him early this season. Nonsensical? Not if Buffalo's new front office, which took over shortly after the Maybin choice, is more concerned with protecting its high-paid jobs than with winning. Tuesday Morning Quarterback noted just before Maybin became a Jet, "Making a great show of discussing how bad the previous Bills regime's high draft pick was creates an excuse for [bills head coach Chan] Gailey and [bills general manager Buddy] Nix to present a losing team in 2011 -- 'What did you expect, when the guys who came before us blew the team's 2009 first-round pick?'"

The Bills are 5-7 and last in the NFL in sacks. If everything about their season was the same except they'd simply kept Maybin, the Bills might be in the playoff hunt. But to the coach and general manager, lining up excuses for losing was the first priority.

This is just garbage. 'Nuff said.

  9. Chan was right all along, they weren't as good as people thought, and not as bad.

I think the defense is two OLB playmakers away from being very good, with the #1 priority a pass-rushing OLB who can play run as well. The O needs another tackle and a talented WR with speed (really sorry we didn't get to see what Easley brings).

I think their biggest problem, outside of the pass rusher, was that their depth was made up of mainly rookies. Without all of the injuries, I think they have a good shot at 10 wins. [it's too bad Merriman didn't pan out.]

The bright side is this year's class is getting a lot of experience. I think it's also serendipitous that Jackson went down to give Spiller the chance to show what he can do.

I understand the frustration people have, but I see an improving team that's almost there. Another draft like 2011 and this should be a playoff team.

    There's always hope...

As an optimist myself, this is what I WANT to think.

BUT . . . I think the defense is further away than an OLB or two, and the O needs more than one tackle and a long threat WR. I had thought we had an adequate QB but now not so sure.

Bottom line is we have too many positional needs to address in the draft alone, EVEN IF WE HAVE A GOOD DRAFT. We need FA help, and the FO is not likely to want to pay for quality FAs.

Without a committment to win from the FO - meaning RW and his money men - we will continue to tread water.

That said, I think both Chan and Nix are real football men. With RW fading, if Chix can take over operations from the money men, we will have a chance. This year's draft APPEARS to be an indication of that, although the lack of FA signings in the off season point the other way.

  10. When we inevitably get to THIS point of the season, when all hope is gone, I think to myself: Did George Washington quit when the British kept beating him? Did Frodo quit when everyone but Sam had forsaken him? Did that surfer chick quit when she got her arm bitten off by a shark? Do cats quit on life even though they have all these extra lives? Did Rocky Balboa quit when he had to fight that jacked Russian? Then I remember that I left some chicken on the grill and if I don't flip it over, it's gonna burn!

Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
