I mostly agree. He's a damn fine quarterback and certainly a top 6-10 guy in terms of production. The thing he's got going against him is that he hasn't really been a winner in the playoffs and the 4-12 season just stands out as being really odd. I know that O'Brien purposefully submarined that team, and some historically really good QBs have been on losing teams (for example, Elway in 1990), but I have a hard time believing a truly elite QB/leader would produce a 4-12 season. I mean, can you ever imagine the Bills losing more than 9-10 games while quarterbacked by an in-his-prime Josh Allen? They are paying him to be Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Mahomes - a guy that always wins regardless of the roster. I just wonder if there isn't a little more "Dak Prescott" to him than Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady, etc.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Given the roster, he was absolutely NOT TERRIBLE in his final six starts of his rookie season. He put up 13 TDs, averaged 287 ypg and went 3-3 during that season ending stretch with Robert Foster and Zay Jones as his receivers. (And it would have been a 4-2 record if Clay doesn't drop that gimme at the goal line in Miami). It wasn't revisionist history or us just relying on the "eyeball test", his stats back up the claim that he was improving and actually fairly good by the end of his rookie year. Yes, there were still hero ball moments and the accuracy wasn't the best, but, assuming your viewing wasn't colored by a pre-existing agenda, you could clearly see that Josh was going to be a very good player at a minimum.

Looming Stefon Diggs Contract situation - What do you do?
TheBrownBear replied to CountDorkula's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think this is the hope, and for all we know these types of discussions may already have or are currently taking place between Diggs, Allen and Beane. -
There were posters that legitimately believed he would be unseated by JAKE FROMM!!! LOL. Admittedly, I was a "wrong Josh" guy on draft night, but was over it and on the Allen train by the time the season kicked off. I was a true believer by the end of his first year and believed it was only a matter of time until he became a star in the league. Look at the putrid offensive roster in 2018. He was a one man offense down the stretch of that season and still produced a winning (or was it .500) record after the midway point.

I don't know what universe these guys live in to think that Diggs will be content to play out his deal without trying to extend by the end of this year (at the latest). This is Diggs' last chance to get paid and he will be on the wrong side of 30 when his contract expires. I love Diggs right now, but history tells us that he's not beyond playing the malcontent if he views his relationship with Beane going sideways over the next 12 months.

I mean, this is rather simplistic thinking, and is pretty much the story for every position player outside of QB. And you conveniently left out young ascending guys like DJ Moore, DeVonta Smith, Waddle, Hollywood Brown, Pittman, etc. (also, D. Johnson was the #66 pick of the draft - not undrafted). Generally speaking, the guy you grab in the 1st or 2nd round is more likely going to be better than the guy you'd grab in the 3rd or 4th round at the same position. Also, when you're comparing 1st round receivers to the rest of the draft field (2nd through 7th rounds) you have to take into account how many more receivers are drafted in the final 6 rounds of the draft. What's the flameout/bust rate for a 1st round receiver vs. the bust rate for the rest of the field? At the end of the day, the Bills scouting department will grade all these guys out and take the best player available at a position of need at #25. If that happens to be a CB, the pick will be a CB. If it happens to be a WR, it will be a WR.

I agree and we are clearly in "win now" mode with the Miller signing, so I don't see anything like this happening. But it's a fun exercise to consider a shorter sure-fire window now vs. a potentially longer window albeit with the risk of the unknown attached to it.
-
It seems crazy, and I personally LOVE DIGGS, but then you look at what guys like Chase and Justin Jefferson (#22 pick, btw) have done and you can't help but wonder.
-
Just curious - what kind of return would we get for trading Stefon Diggs? Not that I'm a proponent of that, but given the Hill news today it got me thinking about it. Trade Diggs and, assuming a 1st round pick is part of the deal, draft his replacement, use the other 1st round pick on a CB, another receiver or Breece Hall. Would set the Bills up for a good 4-5 year run with young cheap playmakers for Allen. And frees up money to refresh other areas of the team.

2022 Free Agency - Around the NFL Thread

I know it's been said many times already, but damn, this has got to be the craziest offseason in NFL history from a player movement perspective. -
Tyreek seeking a trade [Now: Traded to the Dolphins]
TheBrownBear replied to Dablitzkrieg's topic in The Stadium Wall
We did limit Mahomes in the first road game in KC when he had all his weapons. None of the other QBs in our division have done anything positive against the Bills, most notably Tua, who has been atrocious. But yes, our defense has generally struggled against 1st ballot HOF quarterbacks like Mahomes and Brady. -

The Pats defense is slow and getting slower, so I'll give you that. The Bills were torched in KC in the playoffs, but that's without Tre White and, again, it's KC and they do that to everyone when they are on. -

I agree that they couldn't keep him at that price, but you can't deny that they just got worse in the short term. This is a move for 2-3 years down the line. -

Hill's insane speed is the number one reason they beat the Bills. You take him out of the equation and the Bills are probably still hungover from their Super Bowl parade. -

So, what are the Chiefs big needs right now? I assume they're looking for secondary help and another WR to replace Reek? Pretty similar to Buffalo's situation. I could see them packaging picks to grab one of the CBs or WRs or hope that a guy like Dotson falls to them since he could fit the Reek mold. -

Uh oh. Next year's Bills vs. Dolphins lines just moved from Buffalo -11 to Buffalo -10. -
The WR option is really tantalizing assuming there's good value there, but then I consider that our WR core (which was awesome the past two years), was just stocked via trade and with mid-round picks. We've found adaquate CBs to pair with White in the past, but I just think we could build a truly dominating defense if we drafted a 2nd lockdown corner opposite Tre. It's just such an important position in this day and age. Interior O-line is definitely a big need as well, but I think we should be targeting rounds 2-4 for those picks.

Bills trade 7th rnd pick for backup Case Keenum
TheBrownBear replied to Hebert19's topic in The Stadium Wall
Honestly, this is the perfect backup option. Veteran with tons of starting experience (including playoffs). -
I'm sure he enjoyed getting so many touches last year after years of being underutilized. Yeah, guys want to win, but they also want to play. It is a game after all.

And Watson is getting to do that and the Browns as arbiters of his NFL future apparently agree. All our handwringing and whining about it, which we are completely entitled to in a free society, haven't changed that fact. So, what's the issue here? -

TheBrownBear replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't care to and this isn't about that. I agree 100% in the dictum of innocent until proven guilty. It means that Watson has the right to move around freely in society, work, vote, etc., and unless I'm confused, he is being allowed to do all these things. Innocence in the court of law doesn't mean we have to like the guy, root for him and financially support him. These are two separate things. Just ask Fred Goldman. -

Dude. I might be wrong, I didn't read through every single post, but I have seen no one argue that the court of public opinion should replace the rule of law. And if anyone is saying that, they are dangerous fools - agreed. I get it. Outrage culture seemingly can condemn a man these days before they ever get a chance to defend themselves, but that's not really what's happening here. Watson is free to do whatever he likes, but we do not have to like it and respect it by rooting for the guy
