He's a Southern boy married to a Southern gal. Maybe he just got tired of living in a Northern state and all of the differences (weather, geography, culture, politics, etc.) from where he spent most of his life. Also, Jax is a team on the rise and he gets to learn under an Andy Reid disciple as opposed to the relatively inexperienced Dorsey. Probably a lot more career stability working under Pederson than Dorsey at the moment. The move makes perfect sense for Hall when you think about it.

Khalil Shakir / answer for WR 2 / Makes Sports Illustrated
TheBrownBear replied to Figster's topic in The Stadium Wall
I like Shakir a lot. Passes the eye test and he's apparently a mature dude and hard worker. He's the kind of guy you could picture making plays up and down the field for a team like KC. Not sure why he didn't see more work this season given our struggles at the slot receiver position. Maybe Dorsey just didn't want to get out of his comfort zone in his first season as OC. It took him next to forever to get Cook integrated into the offense as well. -
If the last couple of years have taught us anything, it's that when the going gets tough, our childish posters get more childish. With regard to Holcomb's potential role with the Bills, it looks like he's served as a "defensive run game coordinator" at times in the past. My best guess is that's what he's been brought in to address, especially given our occasional struggles against the run during the McD/Frazier tenure, and Frazier's expertise being heavily weighted towards the defensive backfield.

I always assumed he'd come back and play, and was sort of expecting to see him on the field next year for the Bills, but didn't want to say it out loud for fear of being shouted down here. These guys are wired differently and aren't governed by fear. The likelihood of what happened to Damar happening again is probably around the same as you or I being randomly struck by lightning while attending a game. And as for emotional trauma/PTSD, it was probably much worse for his teammates and staff on the field than it was for Damar. He basically has no recollection of anything other than waking up on a ventilator and feeling like sh*t. Assuming he's cleared and wants to play, I don't see why anyone here wouldn't be excited to have him back. He's a promising young player on a rookie deal in a position of need.

Something very different: who we really are. 😄
TheBrownBear replied to Italian Bills's topic in The Stadium Wall
That's funny, Gug. I actually grew up thinking I was German, and only recently found out that my miserable bastard German grandfather wasn't my bio-G. That guy is some Italian dude per 23AndMe. Then again, outside of the small penis thing, I'm not sure if anything you've written resembles the truth. -
A theory about Allen and (some) red zone turnovers
TheBrownBear replied to ShakAttack's topic in The Stadium Wall
No offense, but you just based a novel length post off of one play you remember during a 17 game season. (also, Gabe was open, it was just a bad throw by Josh). I just watched the tape. Josh threw 5 RedZone interceptions. Two were targets to Knox (Jets and Vikes), one for Diggs (Detroit), one to Davis (Vikes OT) and one that he tried to turf that was picked off by Jaire Alexander. He had two other picks inside the 5 I recall (the throw to McKenzie against the Bears and the missed bomb to John Brown against the Fins in the wildcard round). Diggs has no reason to complain about Davis seeing too many targets. Diggs was the 5th most targeted receiver in the NFL and attracted about 60% more throws than Gabe. We were too predictable in goal to go situations and Josh wasn't reading the field quickly enough. Those were the major issues in the RedZone, imo. -
Josh Allen golf ball- Charity fundraiser
TheBrownBear replied to artmalibu's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm a 1. What Oncore ball did you play? The Elixir is sort of like a Chrome Soft or AVX, softer feel, but a little too spinny off the driver. Have you tried the Vero? It's pretty similar to a ProV1, Srixon Z-Star or TM TP5. Also, my buddies and playing partners get a kick out of the Bills logo (I have a couple dozen of the earlier "17 Bills Mafia" logo balls). I'll play Pro V1s or Bridgestone Tour B XS's in tournaments, mostly out of habit/comfort, but I don't think they are really different at all from most tour balls these days. The Vero and Vice Pro Plus are just as good in my opinion. You're just not putting extra money in the tour player's hands like you do with a Titleist Pro V1. -
Good points. I think we are all looking for statistical evidence to support what we felt while watching Gabe this season. Watching the All-22's, he just didn't look sharp in his route running and didn't appear strong in cutting and coming back/making a play on the ball. And there was the alligator arm thing and his inexplicable lack of awareness of the sideline at times. Ultimately, he failed the eye test for me. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention to him in past seasons, because there weren't as many glaring mess ups due to his lesser target numbers.
-
I agree that Josh's play after the bye left a lot to be desired, but it's not really fair to say all those missed targets were bad throws by Josh. I assume some are pass breakups and others could potentially be good reads and decent throws where Gabe wasn't able to beat his man or make a good play on the ball for whatever reason. Both Gabe and Josh (and to some extent Dorsey) share responsibility for Gabe's perceived underproduction this season.

That's kind of my hope too. He came back fairly quickly from that high ankle sprain and was basically useless in the Miami and Baltimore games. A professional wide receiver needs to be able to cut quickly and crisply, something that is hard to do on a bum ankle. I basically lost my entire junior season of high school basketball because of a tough high ankle sprain suffered in practice a couple of weeks into the season. I sat for about a week of practice and then rushed back way before I should have, because I didn't want to lose my spot. I taped that ankle like a mutha, but I had zero explosiveness and struggled to stay in front of opposing guards for the rest of the season, and was demoted to spot or mop up duty by the time the playoffs came around. The counterargument is that Davis did have that huge game against Pittsburgh three weeks after the injury, so I'm probably grasping at straws here.
-
The oddest thing to me about Gabe's regression was how often he had zero awareness of where the sideline boundary lines were this year. My recollection is that he had a handful of potential catches where he made no attempt to drag or stutter step his feet to stay in bounds. And that always seemed to be a previous area of strength for him. Any way you slice it, he just had a real dog of a year.

That's funny, because so many current and former athletes are obsessed with golf. It's a game for life and it is about continuous improvement, and it's you vs. the course (and your mind). If you have any aptitude for it, it is seriously addictive. We get it, you tried the game and sucked at it, and moved on And yes, Josh isn't ever going to be in the Tony Romo or John Smoltz class of golfer, but he's a good athlete, hits it a mile and seems dedicated to getting better. No reason he can't eventually get down to low single digits or scratch. Haven't checked, but yes, he should be playing. The coverage mostly sticks to the pros with the odd shot from an Am thrown in.

Josh = Phil Rivers (just messenger)

There are not enough thumbs down emojis in the world for this OP. -
The ESPN+ PGA Tour Live feed had some good coverage of Josh on Thursday. HIs game definitely looked better than it did back in the spring/summer when he played in the "The Match" with the other QBs. Anyone know where he plays in the Buffalo area during the Summer/Fall? Just curious. As an aside, I had the opportunity to play Torrey Pines earlier this week under "tournament conditions" following last week's Tour event. The setups (rough and pin positions) these guys play under are pretty damn tough. Hard to believe these guys make any birdies let alone shoot 10+ strokes under par.

A UCL tear is not the same as golfer's elbow. You can swing and hit a ball just fine without further damage to the UCL, which is why you saw Shohei Ohtani hitting, but not pitching in 2019 following his UCL injury. Josh will be fine. Source: I am a professional golfer and quarterback. (JK: but i'm a scratch golfer who tosses a baseball around with his kids)

Perhaps Kromer is overrated as an OLine coach?
TheBrownBear replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
I love Josh and agree that he's "the franchise" and any success we have starts and ends with him, but I think we need to be okay with acknowledging his faults and where he needs to improve. Those stats tell me we have a guy who wasn't reading the field well in 2022, which led to lots of scrambling and happy feet. Josh regressed as the season went along, at least compared to where he was in 2020 and the end of 2021. I think he definitely missed Daboll. -

Yeah, probably our best collective offensive line since '88-'92! -
Yeah, I'm not ready to bury the draft as a failure. Cook was flashing in the second half of the season and should be our no. 1 RB next year. Benford looked good when healthy and Elam was up and down but showed some promise, same for Shakir. I think all four of those guys are going to be bedrock guys starting next season. As for Bernard, I liked his tape, but he just appears to be too small to play LB in the NFL. Hope I'm wrong.
-
You pretty much nailed it. I like Devin, but the value just isn't there at this point. You have to let him walk. I'd cut Hines too and let him test the open market. Roll with Cook and find a guy like Perrine in FA. Then draft another late rounder or UDFA. And in a pinch, I'm sure we could find another Duke Johnson type to hang on the PS in the "break glass" role.

We were the best team in the NFL through 6 and 1/2 weeks of the season - better than the current Bengals and Chiefs teams. Josh was the unanimous MVP. Obviously, we suffered some injuries, but something else happened on the way to heaven. I think we were ramping ourselves up emotionally towards that regular season game in KC, and then we took a deep breath and just let up (focus, energy, attention to detail) during the middle of the season thinking we could turn it back on and get it into gear again before the playoffs. But during that time Josh suffers the arm injury, we lose a bunch of other players to injury for various lengths, lose Von for the season (I thought it was a killer then and it turned out to be), are thrown off our routine due to acts of God, and lose our starting safety to a cardiac arrest on MNF for chrissakes. So, for sure, building back that energy, confidence and momentum and getting back to our week 6 level of play was a lot tougher than our guys probably expected, and we clearly weren't ready to match the level of intensity and execution of the Bengals 8 days ago. All that being said, give us a healthy roster and I think we are still right there with the Chiefs and Bengals. We could use a couple upgrades on the o-line, another reliable pass rusher and one more reliable WR. If we can somehow fill 2 of those 3 needs, we should be looking good heading into 2023. As for coaching, if we are stuck with what we have, I definitely need to see growth from Dorsey in the run and short passing game and I'd love to see McDermott force Frazier to get a little more aggressive I guess.
