  3. QB Confidence Index: Ranking NFL depth charts 1-32 Dan Graziano ESPN Staff Writer A couple of weeks back, I was in Houston to cover the Sunday night game between the Texans and the Cowboys, and I was talking to one of the Texans' coaches on the field before the game. I asked him how he felt about this game, and we had a wide-ranging talk about all of their injuries and what a rough start it had been to the season for them and how well the Cowboys' defense had been playing, etc. Then he said, "But with our quarterback, I feel like we always have a chance." And that's it, right there. That sentiment is the very basis for the Quarterback Confidence Index. If you feel good about your quarterback, you feel like you have a chance. If you don't, you probably don't. Any "yeah, but" you can throw at that logic is pure rationalization. Is it possible to win without a franchise quarterback? Sure. But I don't know a team that would want to try. With that in mind, we present the latest installment of an occasional feature we like to call the Quarterback Confidence Index. Please remember, this is not a ranking of starting quarterbacks. Rather, it is a ranking of teams in order of which we believe have the most confidence in their quarterback situation as a whole. That means starter, backup situation, age, health history, plans for the future, etc. If you click ahead to your team and don't like what's written about it there, try to carve out some time to read the rest of the piece, for context. Otherwise, I'll see you on Twitter and try not to take it personally. 29. Buffalo Bills With first-round rookie Josh Allen sidelined because of injury, the current starter in Buffalo is Derek Anderson, who has a career completion percentage of 54.3 to go with 60 touchdown passes and 63 interceptions in 77 career games (48 starts). His backup, while Allen is hurt, is Nathan Peterman, who has 35 completions and nine interceptions in 79 career pass attempts. Short-term confidence: LOW. With a patchwork offensive line and an even patchworkier receiving corps, there's not much anyone can do here. They're marking time until Allen is back and can continue his development. Long-term confidence: MEDIUM. The Bills liked Allen enough to take him No. 7 overall, and they believe he's their future. He just hasn't shown enough yet to warrant the optimism of a Darnold or a Mayfield.

  5. 10-23: Chris Trapasso with Bulldog & Sal (20:28) Good Josh Allen Discussion with Chris Trapasso from CBS Sports and TBN. Even though Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen is week to week with an elbow injury, there is still plenty to take from Allen's time with the starters before his injury. Chris Trapasso os CBS Sports joined Bulldog and Sal to talk more on the 7th overall pick and looked into how well Allen has played in his 5 starts, as well as looking into the other QBs in the 2018 class and looking toward some of the other elite prospects for the 2019 NFL Draft. On Josh Allen's first 5 starts in the NFL: "I think he was playing like your typical or average rookie quarterback who does have the talent and can see why he was picked in the first round. I think the game, the speed of defenses, whether he was playing good defenses or bad defenses, he wasn't really acclimated to that yet. And there were times where there were some open receivers and open first reads that he wasn't pulling the trigger on. Then there were times in small little flashes that he was doing that." On the Bills QB situation pressing Josh Allen into action in Week Two of the season: "I think that quarterbacks do learn from playing but at the same time, I think because the Bills don't have this brick wall offensive line, I think it was very risky." "I think this is pretty obvious, but it seems that the Bills probably should have had Derek Anderson on the roster either to start training camp... or at least after they traded A.J. McCarron." On the fellow 2018 QB class: "Baker Mayfield, the last two weeks hasn't played as well as he did when he came off the bench for Tyrod Taylor against the Jets... But he looks like the most ready quarterback of the class." "Sam Darnold, the last couple of weeks, has played a little bit better but I think you kind of see what you saw at USC: he can make some really ridiculous moves too, but he turns the ball over, there are some throws that are late because of his elongated delivery." "Josh Rosen is in a very similar situation to Josh Allen. Not the best offensive line... he's certainly under pressure a lot but there are some of those wild throws, he hasn't been able to get comfotable." On the 2019 WR class: "This receiver class, to me, is the most talented since that famous 2014 WR class... and a lot of them are seemingly what the Bills want, or at least what Brandon Beane had in Carolina with Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess. They're bigger receivers that can win in the red zone and win on those contested catch situations." "There's 3 or 4 guys that I think are not only first rounders, but are good players that can come in right away and be good."

  7. John DeFilippo, Kris Richard Among Coaching Names to Watch By Tom Pelissero NFL.com reporter Who's this year's Sean McVay -- the young, up-and-coming coach who may get an NFL head job sooner than expected? I asked the question around this time a year ago and identified seven candidates, three of whom ended up getting hired (Matt Nagy by the Bears, Mike Vrabel by the Titans and Matt Patricia by the Lions) and two others (John DeFilippo and Kris Richard) who received interviews. As I noted then, McVay -- a 30-year-old with three years of experience as a coordinator when the Rams hired him in January 2017 -- is a rare guy, and pretty much nobody has comparable experience at such a young age. But with the 7-0 Rams hot again, you can bet some NFL teams will be willing to look past the length of the resume (or lack thereof) if they feel they have a shot to land the next superstar head coach. The criteria here remains loose: the age cutoff is in the early 40s, and the person can't have been a full-time NFL head coach before. Here's a short list of names to remember, based on dozens of recent conversations with NFL executives, coaches, players and others close to the search process: Vikings OC John DeFilippo Saints assistant head coach/TEs Dan Campbell Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley Cowboys passing game coordinator/DBs coach Kris Richard Rams QBs coach Zac Taylor and TEs coach/passing game coordinator Shane Waldron Patriots LBs coach Brian Flores Titans OC Matt LaFleur Others to watch in coming years: Dolphins DC Matt Burke; Eagles QBs coach Press Taylor; Iowa State coach Matt Campbell; Falcons DC Marquand Manuel; Giants DC James Bettcher; Vikings QBs coach Kevin Stefanski and TEs coach Todd Downing; Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter; Chiefs QBs coach Mike Kafka; Jets OC Jeremy Bates; Packers WR coach David Raih; 49ers QB coach Rich Scangarello, run-game specialist Mike McDaniel and DC Robert Saleh; Cardinals QB coach/interim OC Byron Leftwich.
  8. (WKBW) - In Week Six, the Buffalo Bills suffered a late, dramatic loss on the road to the Houston Texans. Just one week later, the Bills lost in a far less dramatic way, getting blown out by the Indianapolis Colts 37-5. Up next, at long last, the Bills start the first of two home games in a row -- although the challenge is perhaps the toughest of the year on Monday against the New England Patriots. Before that happens, first is an in-depth look at the individual performances from the Week Seven loss to the Colts, which dropped the Bills to a 2-5 record on the 2018 season. Each week, WKBW.com will review the film, and bring you how each player graded out in the previous week, with the help of the Game Pass app on NFL.com. You can see a full explanation of how the grades get calculated at the bottom of the article. Before we get to the individual grades, first some takeaways from the game to help fill in some of the gaps between the grades that you'll see: 1) Dominance right through the middle for the Colts 2) Young LBs were too easily covered up 3) Believe it or not, there was something for Josh Allen to learn from 4) Russell Bodine was a complete liability 5) Bills runners had success in spite of the OL How the grades work: Every Tuesday, when the All-22 film becomes available, we’ll go through and watch each play and every player on each play as many times as necessary, to assess a letter grade for that game to the player. It is a subjective analysis, and it’s important to note that we do not know the play calls and full responsibilities. With that written, the grades stem from technique, outstanding efforts, and presumed liability. The study accounts only for players that take a snap on offense or defense, and players with under 15 snaps -- unless they have a significant impact on the game -- will not factor into weekly rankings. Season-long grades have been tallied and documented, with an individual game’s grade weighted for how much the player was on the field in a given week. Those will be available starting in Week Two. Previous Weeks: Week 1 - Ravens 47, Bills 3 Week 2 - Chargers 31, Bills 20 Week 3 - Bills 27, Vikings 6 Week 4 - Packers 22, Bills 0 Week 5 - Bills 13, Titans 12 Week 6 - Texans 20, Bills 13 Week 7 - Colts 37, Bills 5
  9. I consider it background noise for the most part and that's even in the old days with a few exceptions.
  10. I wish I could say that I'm surprised, but sadly I can't. No impulse control to live a disciplined life on a sustained basis.
  11. There were already plans to have him start at some point this season. No doubt that's "out the window" now.
