Moneyball and the Browns

Baseball has so much data too. You have multiple groups calculating their version of Wins Above Replacement. You have stats like BABIP/swinging strikes that try to figure out trends, and where a player "should" be based on being exceedingly lucky/unlucky. Then you have the matchup of - how does this pitcher do in this park? this particular batter? day game vs. night game?, short rest? long rest? Football will be like - brady did so and so against the bills. But who was doing what on what play? It's not like gilmore went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts... -
Early 1st Round Mock With Trades
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Depends how you view Wilkerson - if he's your marcel dareus type of boss on the line. You can grab a left tackle at 20, and you get at least 1 more first next year. I'd assume some other draft compensation - 2nd's and such. Could definitely help a team needing playmakers all over, who already have their QB. I don't think it will happen... but i'd respect the jets for actually making that big of a move for a QB. -
1 - I personally think there are several, and we'll get to grab one. Likely either Dodd, Lee, or Ragland. 2 - I don't know about TT, but i don't think you can get a top flight QB at 19 3 - Disagree on QB at 19. I'm sick of getting burned by TE's, and having slow LBs who can't cover. Need some speed and skill there. 4 - He's helping assemble the draft board. I assume that means it'll be d heavy. As a team who suffered a few cap casualties this year, and probably will again next year.... TRADE DOWN!
-
Have to agree. Why not just draft an impact linebacker in the first. You don't want to create a hole with a trade, only to then fill it with a pick. You think Lynch will be better as a rookie than TT? If not, then its clear you're planning on being bad this year. Lynch probably won't even beat out EJ for the job... considering EJ has an extra year in the system. So you traded your starting QB for a backup QB and the 15-20th best linebacker in the draft. When you could keep your starting QB, and have one of the top 5 linebackers in the draft. Also not really sure how Rex/Whaley would feel about drafting for a team they won't have a part of. If you did this to me as a HC, I'd pretty much expect to be fired after the 4-12 year.

Cornerback Depth
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I actually like our top 4 in gilmore, darby, robey (he's struggled at times, but he seems to thrive in competitions), and butler. The guys were adding are specific to depth at safety and corner, and will push for playing time and contribute on special teams. They also are used to playing the inside spot, meaning robey has to earn his job again. -
NFL.com: Bills #1 need in draft is OT
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not of the opinion that we need to draft someone super high up for WR. It would certainly help our team, but 2 WRs with your last 2 1st round picks (3 if you count the extra we traded) seems like overkill. We're lacking impact rushers on defense and it showed in the middle of the season. Another rotational contributor along the defensive line would be great as well. It looks like we did a good job patching up some of the depth we lost when players left, and i think they're set to roll with the safeties currently on the roster. As for the offense, running back is a strength as well as the oline for the most part. We're clearly bringing a ton of WRs to camp and likely keeping 5 or 6 (with easley on the PUP). -
What you fail to acknowledge is the team that he inherited. He inherited the Chan bills!! Who were one of the least talented teams in the league for 3 straight years. We had no depth, and no top end talent. We had to draft multiple receivers because of the absolute garbage we trotted out there for the 3 previous years. Had no QB as we had to cut Fitz, a lousy O-line and a bottom 5 defense. You blame him for overpaying mario? He was one of our best players in his time here - and we had the money to pay him. Not to mention he signed in 2012, a full year before DW was even our GM. Clay is a bad contract sure, but not a bad player. He also was promoted to GM AFTER Buddy and Russ hired Marrone. I'm sure he had some say in the decision, but who knows if that was his first choice. And you completely ignored a really solid 2015 draft - despite not having that many picks. Several impact guys were drafted and were immediate contributors. You also give him 0 credit for TT and Cog... Lastly, cap hell we are not. We're at the cap sure - but with a couple of contract extensions we'll have $ to cover our QB. Not to mention we have 13 mil in dead this year, and have 0 post june cuts so we have no dead money projected for 2017 yet. If we have to cut people to sign TT, thats a good thing! That means we finally have a QB.

Bills restructure Kyle Williams
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Which is good - we're better with him on the field. -
Honestly, i think everyone's just pissed off that we haven't signed any free agents. So every bit of bills news gets blown up.

Unless you're of the opinion that TT can/will improve. Kaep seems to have plateaued and doesn't seem to want to put in the work. The pouting - surgery by non team doctors, rehab outside of the facilities, demanding a trade to specific teams - is a huge turn off as well. No other QB does that stuff so publicly. It's not a good look, and it's not something I'd intentionally bring in with the thought that "hmm he might be better than TT in a year or two". If he is - whats to say he doesn't complain and demand a raise. Or ask to be traded again.
-
Everything i hear about Kaep - is the stuff you hate to hear. He works hard in the weight room, and on the field. But he doesn't take film study seriously, and he can be a total brat. He went away from the team to get surgeries and rehab rather than stick around. He's essentially a fair weather QB. When stuff is going right he'll be all about it, but the second things start to get bad, he bails on his team. The film study thing is very alarming, since it means good coordinators will confuse him and make him beat you from the pocket. I've seen him throw quite a few beautiful looking interceptions that he was baited into. Guys got a cannon- but he doesn't seem to get it.

Are the Dolphins a concern for you?
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to gr8billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tannenbaum is absolutely destroying their cap as we speak... They let a good home grown player walk. And replaced him with an old guy with work ethic issues. They actually gave something up for a vastly overpaid corner. And cut their starter because his wife said what we all know, tannehill sucks. Kiko could be good. In a walk year, when they won't have cap space... -

They have pretty much gone all-in on Tannehill this year. QB guru coach has to fix him. Last year he seemed afraid to throw down the field. Not to mention the story about him giving scout team guys crap... doesn't sound like a leader to me. -
oline 5 starters returning.

Hopefully Henderson is doing better with the Crohns disease. Richardson needs to step up or step off. Same with Kujo - we tendered Mills . Meaning nobody really expects Kujo to do anything. -
