Pretty much all true too. He's brought in talented players, and seems to know talent when he sees it. But even beyond the draft with watkins/lawson etc. The overvaluation even factors into some of the contract extensions too. Not to say Glenn and Dareus aren't good players either - they are.

Current playoff teams who allow more PPG than the Bills: 3 - Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, and GB/Wash whoever makes it. Atlanta and Oakland are 2 of the top offenses in the NFL. Current Playoff teams who allow more YPG than the Bills: 4 - Same 3 as above plus Miami (who has won all the same games as us pretty much, and beaten us twice) This to me seems to be an indicator that defense is a predictor of success. 8 or 9 teams in the playoffs this year will have statistically better defense than Buffalo. Thoughts?

This again isn't an argument of progression - but an argument that Roman is not a good passing game coordinator. He's great at moving his linemen around, and identifying weaknesses in that aspect. Eh - progress sure. But you're looking at a new playbook and a new scheme even if Lynn sticks. So in that regard - whomever the new dude is... will TT be successful/progress in this new offense? That's what it comes down to - i don't think anyone can make that assertation without knowing the new coach/scheme and where he may fit in. My philosophy isn't necessarily that TT is good or bad, it's more that most QBs wouldn't succeed in this particular scheme (obviously the top dogs will succeed there - they aren't scheme dependent). Having said that - it makes it tough to evaluate him without knowing how he was in Baltimore (lack of film). It'll be the new coaches job to determine if he'll succeed, and will likely be what either tanks them or puts them over the top. Would he get more passing yards if we gave him some easy high % bubble screens, rb screens, and slant routes? Probably. But this offense doesn't have those - so you're more reliant upon the zone and power running plays for 1st/2nd down yards.

The issue is who would want the job at this point. Top candidates would rather go elsewhere or wait for better openings, rather than take a job with a GM who in the media is being portrayed as being on a bit of a power trip.

I don't think it's particularly complex from a route concept perspective. Lynn said instead of preparing 40-50 plays per week they would prepare 20-30, and utilize them out of multiple formations. The issue was lining up in formation, and getting to the line quicker so we could execute pre-snap motions. This was as much for the running game as the passing game. Play calls were coming in too late, and our team was having issues lining up - causing penalties and miscommunication.

How many rub routes did we run this year in the red zone... on 3rd and 3... anything like that? How many times did we run a screen when it was NOT 3rd and long (and the other team suspects it)? How many bubble screens did we throw to Sammy? I mean - how many plays do we even run under center? Its just in/out/dig/fly. Thats it - no options. No coverage reads. We're completely opposite on offense and defense. Defense is checking and switching coverage, and the offense just calls a play and runs it. There's pros and cons to each, but when you call a bad play, and know its a bad play, and have no way of checking out of it. You're in trouble.

The team kinda screwed him over by benching him. Isn't it only fair to not have to make him speak to the media? Talk to Dareus and Shady on clean out day. They're the ones who make all the $$$

I didn't rag on Roman's offense. I mentioned that he was top 15 in scoring in 5 of 6 years. The one year he wasn't was the year Harbaugh left SF - and the team fell apart. But Alex Smith having a sack rate of 9.9% in 2012 before he was benched is a tad alarming isnt it? It was 9% in 2011 as well (this year its 5.5%). He was completing 70% of his passes at the time. I get that there are people running deep open on some of these plays - but I don't know the name of the play or the concept. You're kidding yourself if you think you do. I also have no idea what he's coached to do in a given situation. His pocket awareness could definitely use improvement however. He's had some really crappy games for us, and had some really good games. I'd like to see an offense that has some smart play designs - bubble screens to guys like sammy and shady. Slant routes to a slot receiver. These are super high % plays that are very easy to read pre-snap. You also keep a team on their heels more so you can punch them harder with the running game. I know if Lynn is the guy - hes going to go full in on a power running scheme. I just hope he includes some plays to get Watkins more involved (to the tune of like 100 catches).

For the benefit of Tyrod... The highest Greg Roman's offense has finished in passing attempts is 29th in the league. The highest in yards is 23rd. However for whatever reason he was in the top 15 in points in 5 of 6 years with a group of limited QBs in Alex Smith, CK, and TT. It's a strange playbook with probably way too many formations - and not enough of a route tree. We don't run slants, RB screens, Bubble screens, swing routes, wheel routes, drag routes... Everyone says its because Tyrod can't throw them, but neither did Smith or Kapernick. I think a lot of that is attributed to Greg Roman not building them into his passing scheme. Now Smith plays in an offense that is predicated on legit all of those types of routes, and he's been very successful.

What are the odds that NE wins the division in what - 14 of the last 16 years...? Their success has coincided with our failure. Miami and the Jets have snuck in a few times in that span. But this is Tannehills 5th year, and 1st in the postseason. Rex had 2 years with the Jets. Then there was the year Cassel Started. I get that we should have by now, but many teams would have pretty solid droughts if they had to play a 12-4 team twice a year, as well as only wildcard spots to play for.

Right - doesn't affect the cap. But affects what you might have to actually spend for salary.

I thought he needed to pass a physical in march - but i guess it could be earlier. I thought whoever came in as coach would probably want him anyway because other options are so limited, but it would tie our hands either way.

Yeah - so me thinks TT wanted to clear it up a bit. Even if only to save face for himself.

This would also require a playbook with a real route tree. As much as it's Tyrod, the out/hitch/vert playbook is about as vanilla as they come.

The defense needs a massive improvement. I expect with Tyrod that we'd honestly probably regress a bit in PPG. But if the defense can trend up we could be in the mix.

Why are we benching Tyrod? Cuz he's not that good, and we don't know if we want to keep him. And we definitely wouldn't want him signed for that contract with a bum knee or something. Who's leading the coaching search? Whaley - we're giving him a chance to pick his guy. If it doesn't work, I'll can his ass too. On why were keeping Whaley - I thought Rex was a good coach. I was wrong. Next question.

Ha - He seems to get more out of tannehill. But Miami has invested a ton in that offense. Receivers in rounds 1 and 2. Other picks and extensions along the line. Tannehill is overpaid even if you think he's ok. Then you get to their defense... Lot of cap tied up in the defense, and they haven't drafted well there. They'll need to cut bait with a few overpaid guys to create extra space to find their replacements. They'll also need a solid draft this year as they have 2 old edge rushers, and the depth isnt great (dion jordan looks like a loss). They will probably need linebackers. They'll likely look to upgrade their corners (Tyrod taylor shredded them guys...). Remember this for the Dolphins lovers- theyve basically won all the games we won (got chargers W, we got oakland L while they got Tenn L, we got Jax W). They beat us twice... so that really is the gap between us. Their W against pitt was their only impressive win.
