The reason is the cash guarantees a multi-year commitment. If we get rid of him after 1 - were left with a Romo-like cap hit as we have the 3.25 guaranteed base (which we might get back in cash but not cap - i don't know TBH), plus the remaining 12.4 from the option bonus, and another 1.5 in roster bonuses. We could split it over 2 years if we decide to cut him - but its like 10 mil a year in dead cap for a team that's tight. Makes him hard to trade after 1 year because we have to eat the whole hit in 1 year (again not sure who takes on the cap for the guaranteed base in the trade scenario). If we keep him - id say don't necessarily draft anyone. You're going with Tyrod, and you're developing Cardale. If neither seems viable in 2018 - you can draft someone and you either live with Tyrod for a year, cut him for future cap savings (or to defer half to the next year) or see if he has value on the trade market (he will - his base salaries are reasonable).

I just don't get reaching for a guy at 10 - if in your opinion there are several better prospects for 2018. If we want a QB next year - we should do everything we can to acquire draft capital for next year, as we'll probably have to move in front of someone to get a guy we want. We're not getting a top 2 pick next year. That's likely SF and Cleveland. I don't see either of them going after Jimmy G, because the price is too high, and his pay will be too high after the last year of his rookie deal. 1st and 2nd overall in 2018 gives you an affordable QB through 2023. Those 2 will wait - and they'll be bad in 2017. So now you're looking at BEST the 3rd best QB in a good class. D'arnold and either Allen/Rosen is gone by pick 3. Now we also have teams like Chicago, Jax, and the Jets. One likely takes a QB this year and will "wait and see" but if any of them are below us in the standings (fairly likely IMO), then that takes the last of the big 3 out. Even tanking is tough in this league because so many teams have similar flaws, and other massive holes. Jets are old, Chicago's lousy, Jacksonville is young and can't figure out how to win. If Jax is in the cellar again, i think they cut ties with bortles - aren't on the hook for any dead money - and add a new QB.

The defense had a lot to do with losses to miami (x2 - 28/34 Points allowed and a 200 yard rusher in both games), seattle (big plays, terrible officiating (cost us 3) - in a game where we would've kicked for OT, and a terrible punting effort probably cost us in this one - 32.7 yards per punt long of 36 and a 22 yard return), and NYJ (Fitz 374, and a 100 yard rusher). Win a couple of those and we're in the playoffs - we also don't bench tyrod for a Jets game if it has any meaning.

I could start at QB and we're not getting #1 overall. The browns are drafting garret this year, and will be the worst team in the league. It was like arizona trying to tank with buffalo... Buffalo was fully committed. Goalie makes 30 saves? He's on a plane headed to dallas the next day. We're not catching the browns for this pick.

From EJ to AJ ?? A Definite Upgrade !!
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to T master's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tyrod, romo, foles, even kaepernick... is aj better than any of them? He's played a couple more games than jimmy g and didn't look as good. There are rookies that come with longer contract control. All 4 of the guys above come with additional control once they're signed -

Jamie Collins got a 3rd in the last year of his deal. And he was a pro bowler... not a back up who started 4 games. Qb or not that price seems high -

Bills re-sign Ramon Humber
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to ndirish1978's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If i'm a STer roster bubble kind of guy. i sign as early as possible. Only so many jobs to go around, and a cheaper pay check is a lot better than no paycheck. Also being at OTAs/mini camps will help you learn a new scheme and make a roster. -
Offseason strategies to improve the Bills
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to simpleman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I say sign a RT who was cut recently, and focus on cap casualties. Would liek to see some solid 2018 comp picks for losing gilmore, brown, woods, and lorax. -
It wasn't just "letting go of Hogan" though... It was not replacing him. We had a particularly bad rash of injuries at the position (salas, watkins, harvin, listenbee)- but the difference in the 2nd round tender was about a million. We gave a million to harvin who barely played, and another 1.5 to bush who never should have played. When woods was injured, we were left with Hunter who didn't know the playbook. And were using bush in the slot a few times a game. When we could have used that money to just... keep our slot receiver. They also re-signed their other QB... and a veteran backup. So by their method... they'd keep tyrod and still draft someone in the first.

Addressing WR2 and WR3 this Offseason
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to Hyphe23's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sanu got 6.5 AAV last year. I think woods is better, and by sheer % of cap with a cap increase he should get more than him. I'd try to keep him at 6.5, but not at 8. I feel like Tavon Austin's contract throws off the market a bit too, so he might grab a few extra mil right off of that. -

Amendola could be a nice addition if he's released. Whaley seems to covet size, so britt or quick could be in the mix. I always like terrance williams in Dallas. Garcon's always been a solid secondary piece who blocks well. Smaller guys? Ginn or Wright could be interesting. On the cheaper end - maybe brice butler? Bring back Hunter and tate? Depends what you're looking for in a receiver. -
Whaley wants Cardale to be 2017 starter

That's the rumor thats floating around now. That we'll take someone in the first 2 rounds. If we don't add a FA or Romo... it's even more likely that we're drafting one at 10. -
trade Ragland for more mobile LB or safety
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to Commish's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think he's good enough in coverage to hang with a lot of the elite TE's in the league, but I think he has some abilities as an edge rusher that might translate to the sam spot. He's a prototypical mike though, he attacks his gaps and hits hard. Honestly it's not a bad problem to have a guy who might fit both. I think his intangibles will translate to what the coaches want to see out of their mike. -

Pretty much - would not trade a starting Mike we just drafted for safety help. Doesn't make sense to me. -

I think he can probably play Mike, but i'd agree he's better suited to the SAM. He has some edge rushing ability, and would fit nicely next to Shaq lawson. But part of me thinks Ragland making checks and calls would be better than brown, as he was a starting Mike on the best defense in college. So part of me would rather sacrifice some speed/pass rush ability for stronger communication. Ragland also attacks his gaps well and thumps people. New coach/new slate though - so i trust them to find a good spot for him.
