How will Bills Defense the Run Pass Option?
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to Old Coot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I mean - i guess. Except RPOs can only be run out of shotgun since you can't make a read with your back turned to the field. You also can run PA deep since your linemen won't be caught downfield. You can have more receivers running routes since you aren't limited to reading a single player post snap. If you want you can mess with timing on RPO routes by jamming at the line and forcing them off their spot. -

2 vet corners vs. harry and sanu outside is also a really bad matchup for them. Edelman is always a tough man draw, but none of these guys have speed - and RPOs over the middle require some short area timing that you can interrupt with press coverage. -

Basically an RPO, everyone run blocks, and there's usually like 1, max 2 routes on the same side of the field. If you read maybe cover 2 zone, your slant WR may be open since the LB filled the run gaps. But if you think its cover 2 zone, and it ends up being man or something - there's a post-snap read that you have to make very quickly to decide if you're throwing the slant or handing it off. It's a simple post-snap read, but it has to be made super quickly. You can counter it by playing tight coverage, and their lack of downfield speed and good safety coverage makes it hard for this to be super effective. -

It's all about discipline, and deceptive pre-snap looks. If a pre-snap look makes you think your TE will be open if edmunds fills his run gap, you may throw that pass based off of edmunds filling said gap. But what the other players on the defense do can create problems there. -
The 4 protected PS spots
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to Paul Costa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah - Big factor is how little a player makes on the practice squad vs. what they would make on another teams 53. Minimum is 8400 per week for about 142k per year. A UDFA with a roster spot earns about 600K in 2020. They also get a guaranteed 3 weeks on the 53, plus pay at that level. So 3 weeks at 35K per week (assuming league minimum salary). Even if you end up on a PS you just made 105K in 3 weeks when you would've earned 25k. There are only so many roster spots available - poaching off of other peoples PS is relatively common, but lets not act like these aren't guys that are bouncing around between 53's and PS's. -
How messed up will the 2021 draft be?
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to billsfan714's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it'll be a lot of seniors tbh. -
Foster caught 3 of 18 targets last year... How will we replace production like that?!!!! I wonder if either will end up playing some on special teams this season. Helps you get an active spot on gameday. Mckenzie v roberts will be interesting too. 1.5 mil vs. 750k in savings on cap. I think Roberts is the more secure returner of the 2, but mckenzie definitely showed some abilities on offense (3 TDs and 500 yards on like 60 touches). Duke was a nice story, and both he and foster probably still have PS eligibility. Nice to have guys there who have played a bit in the NFL, and who have familiarity across the offense. If we lose them - no harm. Neither was particularly good. You won't keep 7, so to me mckenzie and roberts is a battle on its own.

We were down 16-0 midway through the 3rd quarter at the jets week 1. 4 turnovers - 2 deflected passes, a muffed snap, and a whiffed blindside block. Nothing had gone right to that point in the game other than a couple of missed kicks by the jets. However Buffalo had 160 yards at half, its not like they weren't moving the ball at all. And when it came down to it - Allen put up drives that put 17 points on the board and won the game. 3 minutes left, darnold continued to do not much of anything. The bengals game was as much on the defense than anything else - they gave up 17 points over 3 straight drives following the allen INT. I'm sure Russel Wilson has to give back his 4th quarter comeback that he earned against cincy too... Hell - Seattle only had 232 yards in the entire game against the bengals.

Paying early doesn't make sense. You just carry it over and pay them next year. Can't carry it over twice anyway. Considering addison/hughes and their salaries, i don't think they bring in clowney. In fact i think its more likely they just cut murphy and use that money to help secure milano/dawkins/white long term. I think extensions and re-structures are possible for players like poyer, hughes, maybe john brown. Gets some cap pushed out for next year should they need it, but honestly right now they're ok. Probably save those types of moves for if/when you have to pay allen.

He was signed before free agency last year as insurance if we couldnt get a top center. They then signed morse/feliciano... with long obviously competing at RG/LG... they then brought in spain for less than long... he lost every competition. Bringing in Winters and Williams to me indicates that they didn't have a ton of faith in him to play meaningful snaps.

It's to me why spencer long getting cut was a no brainer. I think Murphy probably gets cut too unless he's willing to take a straight pay-cut to stay. Even if he'd be the 3rd man up, thats carryover that can be basically given directly to milano - who is a more important active piece on the defense. With epenesa here for sure - jefferson able to swing out to end in a pinch - and then johnson/love/cox... there's a fair amount of guys you can use to replace his production. Regarding King/Jackson/Lewis - I think if White opts out they'll be given every chance to take a spot as a depth CB. In McD's first year - it was White-E Gaines-L. Johnson. Gaines obviously didn't play 16 games, so shareece wright played a bit. A year later it was White-P Gaines-T. Johnson... Gaines stunk, Taron got hurt, so wallace and ryan lewis got a lot of snaps. That 2018 defense with... various random UDFA's- was #2 in total yards, and #2 in passing defense. Having said all that - i think they have some faith in these guys. I know losing white takes away basically the best player on the team, but in 2017-2018 he wasn't a top 5 corner, so the expectations for Norman don't need to be either.
-
If White opts out they probably go with - norman, wallace, johnson with jackson, king behind them. Neal would function as the big nickel/depth NB. Ike Brown and cam lewis probably on the PS - you can put one on the 55 man roster if you feel like say norman or wallace has a lingering issue and you might need depth for a specific week. I feel like they signed king as insurance should white not play after gaines opted out, since I assume White's been in open communication with Beane. They may still sign someone else, but I think they'll see how some of this plays out.

Is Tremaine ready to break out?
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They're built on sound tackling and keeping everything in front. They do a good job disguising stuff since they all know their assignments - the longer in that style of defense the better you get at disguising blitzes and coverage. The more they trust one another. They believe they have the personnel to match up with anyone from baltimore to KC. Yeah, teams early on are going to see what cam's got left in his arm though. I expect teams to stack the box. -
He made about 15 million dollars in his career - less taxes and 401k. Probably gets free care for his injury for as long as he needs it. Played long enough to get a pension once he hits 55, and if he's smart he took advantage of the 401k match that they do. Without even getting into wealth management he should be set up to be OK.

I mean.. is it not a rushing league though? Baltimore, Tennessee, San Francisco, Seattle, Minnesota, Houston, Dallas... Teams are definitely still running the ball. -
Probably both tbh. If they didn't like Long at center... he's deep on the depth chart at RG now. So if they signed boehm to be the backup center, and may already have considered moving bates to center full time. Who knows - but i don't think Long was part of the plan when feliciano was healthy, and i don't think hes part of the plan now that they signed winters.
