Yeldons career yards per reception is about 8, but in the small sample last year it was closer to 10 FWIW (the YPC is his yards per carry - 4.0 is usually the baseline you want to hit... Gore was 3.6 on the year). If Allen was super precise and accurate on those short throws like brees and brady, it make make more sense to incorporate it more in the offense. But being off even a little bit on those throws massively limits YAC. It's a wrinkle I'd like to see added though, just to take advantage of some teams that like to either stack the box, or play man with their linebackers. -
Schein 9 Bills defense
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to Buffalo716's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think with improvements to the offense, maintaining a top 10 defense should get the team to the playoffs. I don't think they are #1, but as long as they slot in the top 10 they should be solid. They need to continue to improve at stopping the run, and creating harder 3rd downs. If the offense can get to bigger leads, it should inevitably lead to more takeaways as well. -

I'm not really too worried though at the same time. He was brought in for mostly run downs, but also because he offers some additional flexibility should someone get hurt. He seems like a do all kinda guy. He's played a fair amount of snaps for the last 3 years on the saints defense, and while they haven't been all-world - its a pretty solid unit. -

Burkheads not a FB, that was James Develin who was hurt last year and retired. Burkheads just a depth do-it-all RB who also plays special teams. Bolden's also in the mix, but hes mostly just primary special teams. White's the 3rd down guy. Michel gets most of the carries. I see buffalo mostly running the offense with 2 backs as moss and singletary - i don't really see either as a feature back vs. 3rd down back though. Singletary probably has a leg up on 3rd downs simply from having another year in the system, and more experience blocking. Taiwan jones will be in that bolden role, and theoretically yeldon can fit in the burkhead role if you think we need 4 running backs. Yeldon has caught more than 70% of passes over his career, and has a 4 YPC average. He's not killing anyone but I don't think you can complain about his role as insurance if one or both of the main backs is hurt. However if you look at the 4th back on the game day roster as a fullback/ST guy then it likely falls to dimarco or gilliam if they really like him. If they're rarely going to see the field on offense, then go with the best special teamer of the two. -
I question newton simply because of injuries and general wear and tear. Coming back last season after the shoulder injury, and saying it was healthy, he looked a mess throwing it. Combine that with a lisfranc injury in his foot, some back problems from a car accident, and just generally a style of play that leads to further injuries... gonna be a tough road. LJ won the MVP, i can question whether he'll win it again, but the guys arrived as far as I'm concerned.

Trubiskey doesn't have the dynamic rusher piece to fall back on either, and he generally regressed from 2018 to 2019 statistically. A couple of really good 2018 games propped him up, and their defense went from #1 in takeaways/#3 in yards in 2018 to #22 in takeaways/#8 in yards. Still a great defense, but takeaway numbers are always hard to maintain. I think you can best control giving the ball away, less so taking it away. They also significantly regressed on 3rd down in 2019, which probably has as much to do with their poor rushing attack as it does with Trubiskey.

Wasn't his fault he was overdrafted too

There should be some options next season to bring in for allen competition if this season doesn't go well. Newton, Winston, Dalton should all be available again. Lawrence likely gets drafted somewhere to start immediately so that could add another decent guy to the mix. I agree though - its a much better looking destination when the pieces are in place for you. These guys look at what tannehill just got after signing as a backup and earning the starting spot.

I think the team's achilles heel at the moment is the inability to really step on the the gas when they're up. It bit buffalo in a couple of games as the defense wasn't able to hold up. The playoff loss, the losses to NE and CLE, near losses to cincy/miami. I don't even really know what it is. Sometimes playcalling got cute and they'd do dumb stuff, sometimes it was drops/turnovers, and sometimes it was just poor execution. A sack is a drive killer, a penalty is a drive killer, etc. The identity needs to be there for this to happen. I think moss can be a big part of helping close out games. Get that 7-10 point lead and hammer them with moss and play action. The goal is to win, and you want to mitigate risk to make that happen, but playing too risk averse can cost you as well.

Gotta remember free agency is a 2 way street. Winston struck out and signed somewhere where he thought he could help re-establish value under brees/payton. Dalton probably wants to be in texas. Keenum got 18 million. Flacco can't suit up til September and he looked terrible last year. Foles was traded. Kyle Allen went to Rivera where he thinks he has a shot to start. Hoyer went to NE for a chance to start. Cam went to NE for a chance to start.

Brian Daboll interview 8/14

3rd and 2 and we were running QB sweeps. Thats how much he trusted/wanted to use gore. -
I don't think you're always going to kick a 50+ yarder. But if its 3 seconds before halftime and we're on the 35 yard line, he's probably going to miss it. Less than 50% over 2 seasons and was 1/5 in 2019. 21st in FG accuracy, 18th in XPs, 26th in TB%, and better than like 4 guys at 50+ because they didn't make any of them. I'm at least giving the kid a chance. Honestly i wonder how much having no/reduced fans at games will help kickers. Pressure is the same, but you aren't in like this crazy loud stadium of people trying to get you to miss.

Cutting murphy saves you 8 mil (minus whatever johnson/cox/love makes). Cutting Hauschka saves 1.75 minus bass salary. Roberts saves you 1.5 minus mckenzie. Yeldon could save you 1.75 too. Smith and Dimarco could save some change. Add it all up and its close to what you probably pay milano, leaving you more space to secure white.

Lewan signed in 2018 for 5/80 at 16 per year. Matthews 5/72.5 for 14.5 a year. Tunsil 3/66 for 22 per year, Armstead 2016 for 5 and 65. Solder 2018 4/62 15.5 per. Bakhtiari 2016 4/48 12 per. So It's in line with the top level guys at the position - similar to what DJ humphries signed for, slightly less than a couple of others - but several of these guys will get that jump into the tunsil territory in the next 2 years. Bakhtiari and Villanueva will get big paydays next year at least. Other guys like Armstead, Reiff, and fisher are likely 2022 bumps.
