Manning cast indirectly peek into Bills Offense.
Bleeding Bills Blue replied to Mat68's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It bothered me that a lot of run checks in week 1 were mostly qb draws. If they want to play 2 high, run out of 11 personnel. Don't need the qb constantly running into contact, we have running backs for that. Some read option plays for them were big chunks. I think they ran a qb power as well. There were also man coverage scrambles. We've seen mostly zone to limit the scrambles, but read option and qb power can get u numbers on one side for chunk plays if they want to play off coverage zone. I'd use Spencer brown in some situations like that. He played tight end before and size wise he's a mismatch to any linebacker. It'll force their hand and u can attack vertically with play action. I'd even motion Knox across to Crack block on some runs and bootlegs to get the backside more help. -
Yep - If they wanna play 2 safeties high you need to hammer them on the ground. The other thing is - if they're in zones like cover 2/3/4, there's like always someone open for a short gain. Screens, plays to the flats, get blockers out in front and just make them play closer to the LOS. This week were playing ron rivera, so allen should have some familiarity with the defense they play. Attack the middle of the field with knox, sanders, bease, and attack the boundary with short stuff to singletary.

Pittsburgh did some strange zone stuff and essentially left people open, had pressure from 4, and took away a lot of that mid-range stuff he likes. Miami game was just... weird. Brutal 2nd quarter of offense. Seemed to be a lot of throwaways in the game. In the 2nd half they only had 4 possessions, they drove down and scored through the air which was pretty promising, 2nd drive they stalled (but flipped the field), and the last 2 drives only had 100 or so yards total to go to score 2 TDs and called 9 runs on those drives.

There were quite a few throw aways in this one (they count 4, but Kumerow got a target on a ball that was thrown into the stands because no one was open), which usually means good coverage, pressure, or both. Only 1 sack on the day. 2 major bad decisions - the mckenzie sideline throw that was almost picked, and the int. He had one deflected at the line that looked like it could've been a nice gainer. 2nd half stat line i show is 10/17 for 120 and a TD, sacked once, and 2 carries for like 25 yards. Not crazy MVP numbers but they were in control offensively in the 2nd half, they had fantastic field position all game which limits the yards you can gain. -

Clearly pressure has been an issue so far this year. The big difference to the raiders vs bills against Pitt? Carr hit on the deep ball to ruggs, and buffalo missed on their big deep shot. That and the blocked punt. -
Hated the int. That play wasn't there and he had time to move and find something else. He underthrew diggs on a should be td before half, but the timing was good. One to Mckenzie was late. Miami called a decent game here defensively but they got hammered on short fields. The good news is, he played well in the 2nd half, we just didn't have the ball a ton. He shredded them on that drive to go up 21-0.

Even with the roman offense we did, and a lot of that was shady. -

Fact is we have a very high percentage of runs that go for no gain or a loss of yards. That always seems like a line issue. -
Margins are thin in this game. A couple great pitchers can drag a mediocre team far. A hot goalie props up a mediocre hockey team. In the NBA a star or two definitely gets you to the playoffs every year easy. A great QB i think is what wins you more close games than you lose, but a bad defensive team usually doesn't go far. 7 teams make it now with the 3 wildcard games. Buffalo has a good QB. Buffalo has talented playmakers. Buffalo has a solid if unspectacular defense. They should be in the playoffs. The locker room is pretty tight so they know what they need to do. Gotta get to 10 wins.

I know some 40 yards of it was pure garbage time - but Buffalo put up 371 yards and 22 First downs against them. That would've been the 3rd highest yardage total in 2020, and 3rd highest number of first downs. 0 300 yard passing offenses given up in 2020 as well. Pittsburgh was 3rd in yards, 3rd in points allowed, 2nd in takeaways, 1st in sacks and sack rate, 1st in pressure rate, fewest in YAC allowed, 1st in comp% allowed, 1st in QB rating allowed... you get the idea. All that to me probably adds up to the #1 in DVOA.

The bucs were frauds last year too after week 1. Everyone was saying brady made a mistake signing in Tampa.
