This article lost me with “every kid in little league gets a trophy”. The rule wasnt changed because the league wanted to make sure it didnt hurt the other teams feelings. Just because there were have been a couple ties doesnt mean this is a flawed system. If a game is very evenly matched then a tie may be a good result. The old system was ridiculous by not even giving the other team the ball a lot of times. I know American sports dont like ties at all but they do add a lot to playoff races and make for interesting scenarios down the road. Im not saying the system is perfect but it is much better than it was. Im sure teams haven't thought about this. Interesting approach, have you tried contacting the NFL regarding this?

So it used to be the reason we have sucked was because we couldn't get a QB and not its because we didn't get a backup QB. A lot of teams have terrible backup QBs and that is not the defining point of the organization. This place is a mess after a loss. Blaming our organization for not getting a veteran backup in a game where we had a limited CJ, EJ go down, Stevie go out, no Gilmore or Byrd and a weak McKelvin. And with all of that talent the organization has brought it the reason we can't win is because of a backup.

Yea we should just cut him. He didn't have a great game so might as well let him go.

I love Grantland and I try to read most of Bill Barnwell's stuff because it is usually very insightful and he backs up most of his claims with relevant evidence and numbers. That being said, if you go back through his past articles from last year he wrote how fumble recovery rate is surprisingly telling for a teams success, as is point differential. There are really good articles hes written that clearly show a good way to predict a teams success is looking at some of these factors, so hes not just pulling these out of thin air. I think hes got it right.

I really want to incorporate the water/boating aspect into it and use a play on words. For example, a really lame one would be "Sea J Spiller". But I would feel much better using someone in the HOF or wall of fame to ensure longevity of the name. Good ideas to play off of though. Thanks

True, but history also tells another story. Given how this draft went down a little different than history says it should have (first time since 1963 no RB in the first round and only 1 "reach/project" QB according to some experts) implies that this year was a little devoid of talent in the sexy positions that usually win OROY. Also since it was possibly the best draft for O-lineman ever (3 of the top 4 and 6 of the top 11 picks) it may not be out of reach this year for an O-lineman to get it. If it was going to be any year, itd be this one. Note: I say reach/project because thats what the "experts" say. I am fully on board with EJ but dont expect him to light it up in year one. But I have high hopes for him in the future.

this draft was heavy in O-Line and limited in the "playmaker" positions of QB, RB and WR. Of the WR and QBs that have a chance to make the most impact in the league EJ and Woods are up there on that list, but that doesnt mean they are leading candidates for OROY. look for any of the top O-lineman to win it. if one of them comes in and does as well as expected at LT than they can easily win it.

Fales of San Jose State, some people say he is going to be the best guy in the class. Theres a lot of top quality talent next year. This year is full of guys that you have to convince yourself in. I would much rather wait until the 2nd round or 3rd and take whos there. Reaching is going to be such a mistake this year I think. I do not want to end up in a Blaine Gabbert situation. He is by far the worst QB in the league and Jacksonville was stuck with him last year and missed out on the QBs last draft. I would advocate for not taking any QB at 8, even if Geno is there. There are so many holes on this team that we are going to bomb anyway. if were going to have a top 10 pick no matter what next year it makes more sense to use that pick on a QB when the QBs are much better, than using this years top 10 pick on a QB and reaching.

McCarron is definitely not 2nd to 3rd round talent. He is without a doubt 1st rounder

Thank you for making this post. This is the smartest post I have seen on here and it what Ive been trying to tell my friends. We need to scrap this year and focus on 2014 really. Use this year to fill in holes (we have many) with high draft choices that are not QBs. Use the cap space to extend Byrd, sign Spiller and Wood and then in 2014 go after a top QB with out inevitably high draft choice and use the rest of the cap space to fill in more holes. Reaching on a QB this year and leaving many holes to try to fill in at other positions next year is not the right approach when you look at the quality of the QBs coming out next year.

if Geno isnt there at 8 then take him but dont move up. Next years QBs are so much better. I know nobody wants to suffer through another losing season with Tavaris Jackson at the helm but if we get a top 10 pick next year the top 4 QBs that are projected to come out will have better grades than Geno does this year. Just wait it out and dont give up too much for this guy. We have too many other holes on this team that need filling.

I think itd be smart to wait this year out with Jackson (or if we bring someone else in to compete) and go for 2014. I think thats what this staff is thinking too. All of the top guys next year, assuming Manziel comes out, will have higher grades than anyone this year and I really dont want to be stuck with the situation where we win 4-6 games but drafted Nassib early in the second or traded up into the first to get him and have a top ten pick next year but dont draft one of these guys in order to give Nassib another chance. I basically dont want to have Brandon Weeden 2.0 on my team. The Browns know he isnt the guy but theyve got another year before they give up. Lucky for them the QBs suck this year but I dont want that to be us next year.

They didnt like any FA QB that was reasonable to obtain and they dont love any of the QBs in the draft. I think we go O-lineman this year at 8 and slide Glenn to guard to fill our new hole at O-line. Then we take a LB or WR in the second unless we get a descent WR in the rest of FA. I dont see us risking ending up with a QB nobody on the staff believes in because he was the best this year and then sucking anyway and getting another top 10 spot and missing out on the McCarron, Bridgewater, Manziel, Murray draft to give whoever we have (EJ, Nassib, etc.) one more year in the system. I think they ride it out with TJack and maybe a 3rd or 4th round QB selection to compete and then go all in next FA and draft period. I honestly think they were gonna ride it out with Fitz or at least let him really compete ( and probably win) if he would have re-strcutred but he wouldnt.
