More in-depth look at Bills cap space
jletha replied to BillsMafi$'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thats fantastic. We still have a QB on a rookie deal, so lock up the guys we need to and swing away on 1-2 more crucial pieces to get us over the hump. The cross your fingers so hard they break that Josh develops. This is the year to go all-in. -
The thing is we would all love for Josh to have the season Jimmy had this year in 2020. We realistically cant expect Josh to take a massive leap. He will more than likely remain inconsistent with accuracy but 60% isnt out of the question. Jimmy wasnt great al the time this year but he did have 3 300-yard/4 TD games which isnt something Josh can claim. With Josh we get the lows and the mediocres to good but we have very seldomly gotten great and even when it feels great (Dallas, Miami) it still is just at the top end of QB play. Even getting a few of those great games from Josh next year and slightly raising his floor would make us real contenders. Some of that is certainly on the FO finding ball catchers and on Daboll schemeing it up but most of it falls on Josh.

Josh Allen - PLAYOFF GAME report card
jletha replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn’t hate to see Allen with a different OC. I don’t necessarily think Daboll is the problem, but perhaps someone else could help get more out of Josh. There’s no way he hasn’t been coached time and time again about taking bad sacks and fumbling but he continues to do it. Not sure what else you do about it but I don’t think that simply getting a taller WR will save Josh. He needs a lot of work between the ears. -

Why would you allow a loss? You need higher expectations. -

Dude, wut? Brown had more yards and more TDs and costs a fraction of the money and 0 picks. THAT IS WHAT A GOOD GM DOES. And yes their offense was dumpster fires but they paid more $$$ for that dumpster fire than we did. Now we are a 10 win team in the playoffs with $90 mill in cap space. Again, that is what a good GM does. -

Disagree. Look at some of the other WRs that changed teams and how they did: Beckham, Randall Cobb, Crowder, Tate, Adam Humphries, etc. Theres a lot of signings that DO NOT work for lots of reasons, culture is one of them. Of the FA WR signings I would say that Brown and Beasley have been the most successful since both exceeded or met their career best performances. That is very difficult to do in any FA signings, let alone two in the same year. Youre underselling the job he did in terms of bringing in talent and managing the cap. I would say Beane almost deserves a higher grade than McDermott. -

Because were in the playoffs with $90 mill in cap space and essentially an entirely new offense. This year alone he hit on Brown, Beasley, Morse, Knox, Singletary and a bunt single on Ford. That is a LOT to get right in one offseason and have come together. -
To reiterate what others are saying you cannot take anything valuable from these responses to questions. But... that said there is some logic to not having Tre shadow Hopkins all game. Hopkins is so good that even with Tre on him all game you will likely need safety help on a lot of plays to ensure you keep him covered. Well if youre going to have a safety help no matter what then we will probably be ok with Kevin on him. Especially if Fuller cant go, you can have Kevin and a safety over top on Hopkins and then have Tre on Stills completely alone on that side of the field. Because Tre on Stills 1:1 with Hopkins being doubled > Kevin on Stills 1:1 and Hopkins being doubled.

This is pretty spot on. completion % isnt the best stat to look at a QB but no matter what the circumstances its gotta be higher. Certainly Josh dealt with some drops but so does every QB. I do think his adjusted completion % will be better in terms of league ranking than his raw completion % though, which is more important. Onward and Upward.

Bills at Texans Playoff Game, Saturday 4:35 pm
jletha replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
IF we come out hot then I think we win this game easily since it means 1) we put points on the board and 2) we will control the clock since we rarely have huge plays for TDs, more methodical drives. Assuming the defense does its thing, it will look like the Cowboys game. Unfortunately our offense is very hot and cold. we almost never come out hot and we often leave points on the board. I think we can still win an ugly game as we have all year. It really depends on how our defense handles their offense. My prediction for the game is it will be ugly on offense and Daboll/Allen will have to put just enough drives together to score points and have the defense keep the game within reach. Fortunately this Houston team has also been streaky. If they come out rolling like they did against NE then itll be tough to keep up with them given our offense. I think the Bills win a close one, low scoring game. -
AFC QBs heading into 2020 - major transitions coming
jletha replied to Flip Johnson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would add that the Brown, Jets and Broncos all feel pretty good about their QB situations (not the other aspects of the team), at least as good as Buffalo does. I think at the end of the day Allen, Darnold and Baker have all kinda reached the same point but taken different paths to get there. IMO none of that group have clearly separated themselves from the others and based on what Ive seen nobody in NY or Cleveland is ready to be done with their QB. Also I think Drew Lock has shown enough to be excited for next year. If were being honest here we all should be having our fingers crossed extra hard for Allen. Hes improved and lead this team to 10 wins but he still has things to work on. -
5th round option only applies for first rounders. Later round picks just need a new contract.

Worst Case Scenerio to make playoffs

If the Bills go 0-3 we would need the Browns (they play the Ravens still) , Raiders and Colts to lose once and the Titans to lose twice. Im sure there more but that should do it -
David Carr: Four Offenses I Don't Trust (Bills one of them)
jletha replied to MJS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yea I was with him in the first part, but I thought his reasoning was going to be because it is a small sample size against mediocre teams or something. But he just went off the rails. What about the last three games says that turnovers are looming? Aging offense...that has Frank Gore, John Brown, and Cole Beasley. Cole is the only guy you "maybe" worry about while Smoke leads the AFC in receiving. He clearly doesnt watch. -
Look at his stats in the first 6 weeks. When he threw the ball 30+ times they struggled a lot more. Nothing is a sure shot in this game but making Lamar throw gives us the best chance. Tre and Johnson will have to lock down the WR man-to-man. I would have the linebackers never break the LOS really, dont pursue upfield. Just run laterally to contain the bigger runs. All of this is much easier said than done obviously.

Week 14 - Ravens (-6.5) at Bills Over/Under 44
jletha replied to SlimShady'sSpaceForce's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yea if you can somehow scheme a way to make Lamar throw it 30+ times a game I think his limitations will show, evidenced by the first 6 weeks of the season when they were good but not the world beaters they are now. In this 8- game win streak he has thrown it over 30 times only once, against the Bengals when they won by 6 points. But, like you said, that is a very tall task with their running schemes. -
Roll Call. Buffalo vs Dallas there in Arlington
jletha replied to CowgirlsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I will be there along with 17 other family members. We are all going down for the game from Rochester and Baltimore. -
Absolutely agree. My post was regarding the point made by OP that his "strengths are actually weaknesses" and cited his arm strength.
-
I wish I could scream from the rooftops for this entire board to hear that his arm strength is NOT ABOUT THE LONG BALL! HE HAS NEVER BEEN GOOD AT THE LONG BALL, EVEN IN COLLEGE. HIS ARM STRENGTH ALLOWS HIM TO THROW IT ON ROPES ALL OVER THE FIELD. So many here seems to think arm strength is solely for deep go-routes and therefore Josh's arm strength is worthless.

One important question I have on the last drive
jletha replied to Thunderstruck's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This isnt right, they did recognize the blitz which is why it was pre-determined that the play was going to Brown on the first read no matter what. The problem is that the hot route was a back-shoulder go route. Identifying the blitz and optioning to Brown was the right call against Cover-0. Given the situation though, not the right route to option to IMO. -
I actually think josh played fine yesterday, not spectacular though. But am I wrong in saying that we have lost those 5-6 yard passes over the middle we were using in weeks 1-2? Every completed pass yesterday felt like it was 15 yards downfield. I lost Joshs ability to make those throws all over the field but those should be bookended by easier throws. Seems like we have moved away from "take what the defense gives you". It showed up bad on the final play before the FG. They show blitz off the right side and JA throws immediately to the blitz side, which is good diagnosis and execution...except the hot route is a back shoulder throw??? Tough throw to make and didnt fit the situation at all when we need only a few more yards to make the FG manageable. Not sure if its Daboll or Allen making some of these play calls but its not working.
-
the good news is that they have very little veteran leadership to help them right the ship and a coach that is confused as anyone in the organization. While this also applied to the Eagles you knew they had the ability to channel their energy properly. The Browns just seem to implode week after week. That said this is the NFL and you can take any team lightly. I know McD will have these guys preparing like its the Patriots.

We are actually following the Russel Wilson model right now in terms of QB development. Wilson certainly had more touch than JA does but overall their entire gameplan was to let him manege the game and win with defense. I remember it took until about year 3 with him before it was consensus that he was a very good starter. That also coincided with him opening the offense more. I think there was a playoff game where he threw for 9 completions or something crazy(edited to attached stats) I am NOT saying Allen will be Wilson but there is a template out there for QB development which leads to success.
