I am not sure I like the sentiment, but I like the writing... I am not sure I like the sentiment, but I like the writing... That is a good question. I hope the answer is not that they thought they were good. Because then we are in real trouble. My guess is they knew EJ would be rough looking in his rawness and that, that would take time to fix. Perhaps they were looking for personalities more than QBs. Two guys who would give the company line no matter what and support EJ no matter what. One way to make sure of that is to get QBs that real can't beat him. Maybe, after this season, should EJ do well, he'll be ready for some competition and if he crumbles we start again all over..... Get rid of fred, super and Kyle and rebuild for another four years..... I should quit watching football anyway.....

Hackett's Red Zone playcalling ineffective
billybrew1 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the problem maybe is that you can tell the Bills are pressing. We kept our starters in there for quite a while. I'm not saying the Bills are giving it all they have, but Marrone clearly wanted to win that game and he clearly wanted seven badly. I think the reason Aaron Williams was in there in the third quarter was two-fold, he is not playing as well as they would like and they wanted a vet in there to call the defense (so we would win). More On defense, Big Ben tore us apart. He had over 3 seconds on that TD pass beating Gilmore, yet everyone is blaming Gilmore. Sure, Gilmore is having a bad summer to date but, the story in Pittsburgh is you cannot give a good QB over 3 seconds. Nobody is talking about this though but if that is Schwartz's D we're in trouble. Pettine knew how and when to blitz, I am not sure Schwartz understands this. I know it sounds a little crazy, but consider that the last coordinator we had that knew how to do this was Greg Williams. That's a lot of coordinators in between. I am so used to seeing the Bills blitz not get even close, watching things like Bills players running into the backs of other Bills or right into blockers ALL the time.. I saw a couple Bills blitzes against Pitt. And they were not pretty. When we rushed four, we didn't get close. I think the most depressing thing about the stealers game, was our defense; BiG Ben scored easy.... That game was not all about EJ and the offense, there is plenty of concern on both sides of the ball. How bad were the Bills trying to win is a good question, we'll find out in Chicago.... -
I thought the way you did the day of the draft. I was mad we didn't get that LB from buffalo when we traded up. Now I understand why he did it. Whaley's most important job is making a QB out of Manuel. Stevie can't fit this offense as it is. This offense is precise and a lot of it is timing. Stevie's route running clashed with this and they can't spend time with Manuel explaining Stevie runs his own routes etc. on top of that Stevie had a miserable year, truly awful and his penchant for dropping passes at keys times came up again. He was always nicked up in 2012 too. To make a franchise QB (that isn't brady manning or luck) you do everything you can to help them get better. Should EJ make it, Whaley deserves a ton of credit. I can see that M Williams and Sammy are making EJ get better. He just can't let those two down. Whaley really did an outstanding job on that offense in two years, I think we have a chance. And he didn't neglect the D that much in doing it. Man, if we still had Kiko that D would look so dangerous. Just think, it still looks very formidable.....that's a good D to lose an impact player..... I am all in on finding ways to keep Jerry, but Whaley made the right calls building this offense imho... God bless him.

If it were me, I'd make him a top priority. That means having a talk with Super Mario, or whatever it takes. I don't know how Mario's contract is set up, but Jerry Hughes is just entering his prime. I mean, the Bills have to look at age here. He is also our best pass rusher. He is what everybody in the NFL tries to get; a guy who can beat a LOT with some consistency. You just can't replace a guy who can do that, they are very rare, we must keep him if we are to be (and remain) a top club. I just can't believe Doug Whaley would just let him walk away, that would nuts. At minimum, we should get a number one draft pick to take the franchise tag off him. He is worth a lot more than a number one pick. Anybody who doesn't think so, you will in a couple months if you pay attention to the line. Go Bills!

Ross Cockrell at the Midpoint of Training Camp
billybrew1 replied to johnwalter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Concerns about Gilmore.... Nobody reported how he did yesterday which is disappointing..... He is still coming back from injuries now and he still has plenty of time to get his time back.... I wouldn't worry about the rule changes as Gilmore is a freakish athlete every bit as much as a big and strong CB..... Now, is not the time to panic..... Can't wait to see the whole secondary and playing together with nobody coming off injury or anything like that. To see them playing together for two weeks or so....then a preseason game (or even regular season). I think the back end of our secondary is going to change from week to week all year.... The injuries alone will do a lot, but certain players are better at certain things..... I wonder if Robey loses time in week one.... I wouldn't be surprised at all with the size of Chicago's weapons.... If healthy, we probably will have Graham at nickel, Searcy at LB, Brooks at Dime, I think you need a lot of big corners/small LBs/ fast Safeties to match up with Chicago.... We play a team like Pittsburgh with a lot of smaller WRs Robey will shine.... -

I think the NFL is reacting (maybe overly so) to Seattle's superbowl. The way the corners played, there were years when all of that, clutch, grab and mug defense would have called interference.... Now, I am still trying to figure out that penalty on Gilmore vs. The panthers.... -
What would the Bills do if EJ got hurt this preseason?

Ted Washington NEEDS to be in the HOF
billybrew1 replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with you 100%. I watched Ted intently, and I saw Mawea knock him back once. If you ever watched Mawea, he was one of the best centers of all-time. It is remarkable how Ted dominated him. Bruce Smith called Ted Washington the greatest run stopper of all-time and he kidding or exaggerating at all and I agree. Ted is in my top 10 Bills of all-time even though he is not a career Bill. A guy who really could beat double teams (not draw, beat) with some consistency. Ted was a, "cheat-player". Someone so good we could move a player to overload a side or double-team another player. Washington had both gaps for certain.Cheat players are very rare. Ted could also collapse a pocket for a crucial play. And I mean just cave it in on the snap. A great, great player. If we had Ted during Jim Kelly's hay-day we would have won superbowls. There is no doubt in my mind. Go Teddy! Go Bills! -
Buffalo is winning the AFC East Division this year.

I like it! Don't forget every year are good teams we thought were bad and vice-versa.... Bills stay healthy and Manuel should get better throughout the season, anything can happen. Go Bills! -

What is the deal with Richardson and Kouandjio?
billybrew1 replied to Kellyto83TD's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am surprised Hairston isn't playing any OT with Glenn out, or is he? If he has not, it gives me hope that Glenn is OK..... It'll be a good day to see Glenn back..... -
Dareus not cleared to practice yet
billybrew1 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good question. I think the biggest thing Marv (and Ted) did as coaches was to get that group of prima-donna, baby-brats to act responsibly and adult-like and work for themselves and eachother. I do believe Coach Marrone is using a great deal of his energy trying to do the exact same thing. It appears Dareus is tough to convince that there is more to life than winning at football and money. I think he's lost his connection to humanity, it is easy to do, especially having lost a love one needlessly....he then probably watched the news or something crazy like that. Dareus should come around with Marrone and Kyle and everyone else helping him.... I mean, I could be totally wrong, I just read between the lines..... What Marrone and Williams are saying, what Dareus says and does.... I believe he thinks the only reason anyone cares about him at all, is because he is good at football and can help them win (amd make more money). I think marilyn monroe or all really hot babes have a similar problem or all rich people....you don't trust anybody, because they all just want something..... Lucky for me, I"m worthless. What is life for? What is good and real? What is truly important? I think Dareus needs to have answers he believes. Perhaps he is lost because he does not really care about anything. Us or himself right now?, bwho knows? Having him be a gifted millionaire that can lift a car does not make him immune to the human condition (it usually helps a great deal though ; ) ). I may be wrong but, I'm pretty sure that to get as strong as Dareus and still move quick like him takes extreme commitment. Massive exercise and diet commitments. With all that muscle, it probably doesn't take long to get out of shape if you really slow down lifting and eat poorly, like a depressed person would do......just sayin' I am not trying to defend him as much as I am guessing what's wrong..... It is hard for us normal people that gotta put up with **** all the time and can't get strong and healthy and rich etc. to sympathize with someone whose done it and then squanders it, but he is really showing us his flaws just like the ones we have. -

Lions Defensive Highlights
billybrew1 replied to Captain Hindsight's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, I have heard that too and that is encouraging. But I've read about Schwartz's wide-nine a bit and he essentially sends his front four up field to the ball just about every play. This is how he likes to get pressure more than blitzing. Last season, Super Marion stood up and played patty-cakes with the right OT a ridiculous amount of time. He was reading the offense, looking for screens, delays and draws. He really should make more impact plays in this D. He should play much faster. Dareus would too, only he is often doubled and often can't beat it. From what I've read, it is the LBs that have major run responsibilities. Particularly the MLB who has both A gaps. You need a very strong and stout player in at MLB to play this D, hence drafting Brown as not only competition but insurance. Interestingly enough the MLB has tons of run responsibilities in the 4-3 under. This is pettine's defense. Kiko, while doing an excellent job, should not not have played MLB in Pettine's D either and we probably would have signed Spikes had Pettine stayed. I think Schwartz's defense is going to be good because it fits us. Because We have four linemen that excel at pass rushing. He have some depth at DT. We have Manny helping at end (and perhaps more, we'll see). We have Spikes, Brown and Rivers, all good fits and hole fillers. We are still good at S. A. Williams is a stud. He'll be great playing. The concern with Aaron is he has to shake the injury bug. I think he will. Denorris is big, mean and ready. Duke, Jonathan and Kenny Ladler provide good depth and competition. And lastly, our cornerbacks may rival our defensive line in overall talent this year. Graham was an awesome signing. Cockrell looks like he'll be able to help. Schwartz is talking up uber talented Ron Brooks. Robey is dynamic weapon at nickle. Leodis is back to normal now. (The injury, the play, the losing, with hard work, he has been able to rise above that and is playing closer to his potential now. He's a good and solid inside-outside CB and a hell of returner too.) Stephon Gilmore is definitely a key Bill once again, even with all the depth imho. With Kiko gone now, somebody has to lay the wood on some plays. Somebody has to create big plays. Make stops. Defend passes. Get tackles for losses on the right side of the defense. Nobody fits that description as well as Gilmore. Film junkie, gym rat, unusually big and strong for a CB, ultra fast and ultra quick. We need to make-up that probowl player that we lost in Kiko. Gilmore, now entering his third season, just might be able do that. The point is, corner hurt us tons last year. With Gilmore's stunting broken wrist (what a chushing injury that was, almost as bad as this year's Kiko injury). Justin Rogers complete collapse, Ron Brooks injuries, (did even McKelvin miss a game or two?) The point is, we might be like a machine at corner this fall, possibly going six deep and all being valuable. (No scrubs!) This difference is huge! So, attacking front four. Fixed MLB position and that is huge also. (I would have said LB fixed entirely until....) but at least we have a few options there now..if Kiko got hurt last year it would have been even more disasterous. Fixed cornerback depth. The biggest change. We could go from it being a huge weakness last season to a huge strength this season. And that could make up for Kiko. (Although I wanted to see this D gel into an ultra top unit....oh well, maybe all the LBs will surprise and be a solid unit.) No injuries! Go Bills! -
Lions Defensive Highlights
billybrew1 replied to Captain Hindsight's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've been saying that since they got good under Schwartz.... Why do they keep losing? But especially last year.... I say this over and over and no one wants to hear. We will not miss Pettine. The reason Schwartz came here and did not take a year off is because our defensive talent fits his scheme like a glove. Particularly having two phenomenal pass rushing DTs in Dareus and Kyle. But the whole front line fits as well. We could use another pass rusher, gunna miss Kiko badly, but everything else is there. Schwartz may not of ever had a secondary as good or deep as ours is. If Gilmore can make that big jump this year we should be the envy of the NFL back there. Spikes and Brown were fantastic adds that are vital to this defense (as well as Pettine's) and they are gunna help so much it's ridiculous.... I can't wait! -
What I saw was passes completed down the middle to a receiver being watched by a little kid. I think Robey ran into the guy's ass. I stand by my remarks and will be proved correct (that Robey is a matchup nickel-back only). There will be weeks where the top 3 are Gilmore, Leodis and Graham and it won't be because of injuries. Robey is a very good match-up, Nickel-back and I am glad to have him, but the poster is right on. Additionally, Leodis, had to overcome a horrific injury, a career ending bad-play and playing on a losing team his whole career. I give him tons of credit being able to bounce back and play like he did in college and as a rookie. What he did though, is kinda expected in a way..... because he is an off the charts phenomenal athlete. It is amazing how he can go step for step with any WR in the league in still be in his back pocket. A thing of beauty. And you don't dismiss an excellent special teamer. So what if he got the contract because of that? (Although that is not reason why) That just adds to leodis' value it doesn't take it away. He is a rare athlete amongst rare athletes.....

Sherman Can't Cover Reed...Says Reed
billybrew1 replied to Mark80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I couldn't imagine who Reed was when I saw the link..... Andre Reed. He's indescructable! -
I am 100% with you on this one. It's just Joe B's opinion but it is just so wrong. He is supposed to be an "expert" telling us about the Bills and this is just nonsense. Not only is Robey limited to nickle-back, he is limited to part-time nickle-back.he got killed last year facing Cincinatti and their set of big receivers. If we match-up against three tall receivers again, look for Graham to be the slot corner. The post creator was spot-on in his assessment, I am just adding to it. I'll end it by stating that Leodis McKelvin is also our #1 punt returner and has been a top punt returner in the NFL for a long time in addition to being the starting LCB. Geez, Joe! Are you trying to go, "shock-jock" like that moron at the News?

Marcell Dareus has not been arrested again yet. (7/22)
billybrew1 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hated that old headline.....especially the first time I saw it..... -
There are going to be times where we need a big play on D and it just won't be coming with Kiko gone, yes. I think Byrd was outta here practically at the end of 2012. He just wasn't the same guy last year so I don't think he will be missed that much with the guys we have to take his place. Corner was a huge hole last year after Gilmore broke his wrist and we now have Graham to take his place. Cockrell looks like a nice add as well. I read a lot about the wide-nine and 4-3 under (the main D pettine showed) and both defenses call for a MLB who can take on guards... Kiko wasn't that guy. Spikes and Brown are. They arevbig adds for our D this year. So we really bolstered LB (plus Rivers and Johnson)!and CB (which costs us games last year. Ibalso think our guys fit schwartz's D like a glove. Probably the main reason he came here instead of taking a year or two off. The front four is perfect for his D. Yes, including Jerry Hughes. The jury is still out a little bit on the rotation but it is promising with Manny, Alan, charles, and Bryant.... We'll probably keep a ninth here if one is worthy. I really liked our six LBs before Kiko's injury. Yeah, it's bad but we have Nigel, Brown and that special teamer whose name escapes me but fans and coaches have been mentioning him since during last season.... Now, we have to look through the rest of the guys for a good back up or sign one later.... The new LB is going to be a slower, lesser player, but maybe he won't cost us any games either and perhaps surprise.... I like Nigel there but have a feeling he hasn't impressed the coaching staff.... Anyway, with EJ's chances looking way, way better than last year, it is clearly not the end of the world..... Merely, the loss of one of our D playmakers.... Known other D playmakers.... Kyle, super, Jerry, Marcel and Aaron.... Definitely looking to add stephon Gilmore to this list. Graham is also a play maker.... Who else is going to do it.... While the Spikes add is super huge he lacks in big plays (he excells in stops though which are a little smaller big plays). Who else is going to step up?
-
He was off last year because Race Car Jerry hit him square in the hip during their first encounter.... Tom..... We are coming.....
-
Tuel at #2 all the way baby! I liked what I saw at KC.....the big INT was curios.....weakish looking arm concerns me, college injuries too....but I thought he saw the field and distributed the ball very well for his first start. I think he has the mind and the vision. He's NFL size and stronger this year. He's fast too.... I want to see more. I think he is a very viable prospect. I can't wait till the hall of fame game.
-
They should have asked him who he is taking under his wing now that Stevie is gone..... Bryce? I think we have at leadt four excellent leaders now in EJ (even though he has not shown by example in a game yeat) Freddy (of course) Eric And Kyle.... I like to see another on D...... Spikes? Could it be?
