  1. I like Devin Singletary a lot as our starter. I think fans diss him because he is not a home run hitter. There just aren't that many Adrian Petersons out there.... (1)

Devin is a lot like Thurman, plenty good enough for me....He is going to have his best year yet. He'll regain his impressive 5.1 yds. carry plus he'll improve as a receiver both catching it and having the mindset to get by the first tackler (just like he does running). And he is already a very good blocker....

I hope Daboll knows how to use both Breida and Moss successfully. Moss seems strictly an inside runner and Breida strictly an outside runner.  Chan Gailey (now out in Miami apparently) is a pretty good offensive mind and he couldn't use him.

Moss is an extraordinary pass blocker, but can he be a power back at that height and weight? Is he Devin Singletary without the moves, quicks and shimmy? I don't know?  Can Moss be successful playing STs?  I really thought Breida would take one of the return jobs. What's up with that?

I miss Fred and Marshawn..... now that was a pair of running backs! We'd be pretty damn awesome with those two incredibly tough SOBs now. So, in that sense, I guess I'd rather upgrade from Devin, but you'll see, you'll all see, Singletary is definitely a starting NFL RB (that should be paired with another good RB). I think he can be the 1A of a solid pair.

An article I read a while back said Moss was highly effective in college largely when he was fed a LOT. That he needs 15+ carries/game to be effective....I hope they are wrong because until Devin gets all beat up, I really don't see that happening. Furthermore, I don't think Moss can be a 1A all year. He'll get too beat up....I think he is 1B at best but hopefully I'm wrong and he becomes a stud for us.

Who was our OC when we had Shady, Gilleslee, Carlos and Boobie? Man, he got the most out of all four of those RBs. All four were highly successful for us and do much fun to watch....Was it Greg Roman? I know Daboll was awesome getting JA to be a STAR but I hope he takes pride in his running game and puts all of our backs in a position to succeed at what our backs are good at doing. I'd love for another fish to blossom into a very good player after bombing in Miami. Maybe Daboll can do that for Breida?  NE always seems to make very good use of fast backs, maybe Daboll can in Buffalo? Screens and pitch outs, little slants with them out wide. Get them past the front four and into space.....

    Go Bills!

Cody Ford is a bulldozer. Hopefully he stays healthy.

Here's to hoping he stays healthy AND is a nice upgrade in both run blocking and pass blocking. It will have been a long time coming.

Speaking of the 2019 draft, I thought it was interesting that his draft mate was also playing a good share of the time even though he is a starter. Ed, it appears, still needs plenty of work and hopefully he continues to improve.....

I think Cody, Ed And Levi were the only starters to play.... I can definitely see why Ford would need to play but playing Ed and Levi was a bit of a surprise to me....

Motor has always been good, fans were hard on him for no reason.

I think the truth lies somewhere in between. He was a little off, maybe he questioned his confidence some....but he was never terrible, still broke long runs (between five and 22yds.) impressively. I think he's more than ready this year and will be our #1 and he will be breaking those runs at a fairly consistent rate (he will regain his 5.1yds./carry rate from his rookie year up from his 4.3 last year. He regains this 5.1 largely because the offense is better, the blocking is better, etc.

I think he also improves as a receiver this year. Both his hands and his yds./catch as he feels more comfortable he will break tackles and shimmy his way for better output.

Jake Fromm - nice comeback for the win after doing nothing in the 2nd half

Davis Webb - showed everything I want in a 3rd QB, led the only TD drive by the Bills

Motor Singletary - Looked ready for the season, happy if we don't see him again until opening day

Greg Rousseau - Looked dominant, came up with key sack early

Andre Smith - All over the field, great INT called back by penalty

Jaquan Johnson - solid in the secondary, pushing hard for 3rd/4th CB safety

    Who ya got?

Phillips is really who had the first sack accredit to Groot....

  5. How will Special Teams effect roster building? Does Stevenson get called up if McKenzie goes down?

What about Taiwan, matakevich and D. Johnson?

    3 3rd and 4th string players?

Are we going to start Klein vs. 12 offenses? Like NE is going to run? I think we see a lot of big sets. Do we keep in our standard D with Taron?

Does Tommy Sweeney play STs? I sure hope so as I want him to make it....

Do Stadium Wall Gents feel comfortable with McKenzie doing both kicking jobs? Not sure I do. I'm just worried he is going to get hurt. I think he'll do a fantastic job though (although he might fumble if hit hard.) I think I prefer two separate players returning. One PR and one KOS. Right now, McKenzie is a very important Buffalo Bill. Go get 'em, Isaiah!

Jake Kumerow is for real! UnBillievable!

What to do with Isaiah Hodgins? He looks like an NFL WR.... Doesn't he?  Will he make it to the PS? What about Stevenson?

Just about every team wants to cut low round picks but keep them on the PS, though we have a strong and deep roster which means low picks are not going to make it, most teams have guys they want to keep. Is there a gentleman's agreement regarding the practice squad that most teams leave other teams PS players mostly alone? Sorta seems that way to me.

How many DL are we going to carry? Surprised Vernon is over Harry...Though I thought it hard to tell who was playing better last year between the two. If Harry truly is healed up and in great shape, I think the Bills could carry five DTs....

Feel like there isn’t much that separates any of the Guards as you go down the depth chart. It’s good in that you have quality depth, it’s bad in that none are real stand out starters.

Interesting they moved Feliciano to LG from RG.... I was hoping Ford would be more athletic and run with the LG spot ....

    Feliciano is very accommodating.

    You Go, Jon!

Not the most athletic LG but perhaps Ford can crush someone from his RG spot?

Man, I hope Ford is an upgrade! (And a major one at that.)

    I can hope, right?

No Dion Dawkins, No Allen I say.

Dawkins might not be ready until week one..... I hope he feels well now and is good enough to eat fully and lift fully.

If not, we could be in big trouble vs. Pittsburgh unless Bates can pull it off?

I'm telling you, Pittsburgh is going to be ready to beat us if we can't nail everything down prior to week one.

That definitely means a fit and ready to go Dion Dawkins. Pittsburgh's D is the hard part.... The Stealers want that game badly.

  8. It really is tough figuring out the best 53. It's not all roses as most of of our DL have a lot of negatives. At DE: Jerry and Addison are too old while Groot and Boogie are too young. Daryl Johnson is just great at STs....

Most of our DTs are mediocre to good no one is great. At least not yet.

The Bills need play makers in the front seven and we need to toughen up vs. the run.

We could do it with a ton of players but how many can we realistically keep?

    Nine?

    Ten?

    11?

It is hard to finish a roster with 11 DL.... Jerry - Star - Ed - AJ --- backed up by: Groot - Harry - Zimmer - Boogie --- Backed up by: Efe - Butler - blank - Addison and we didn't get to Daryl Johnson yet.....How can we waive a young, talented STer?

Is he a core STer? I think he is..... No blue chippers here but potential for one..... It is really a dilemma I think, in a way....

What is the goal of the defense this year?  Is it to return to similar numbers of the prior two years when we were second and third in yards allowed in 2018 and 2019? Is that what we're shooting for? I'd like that but to also be more opportunistic as well. We were a plus four overall last year which isn't terrible but I'd like to be around a plus 15 this year. We should have leads and those leads should turn into turnovers imho..... So 2nd or 3rd in total yards allowed, plus a +15 in turnover differential. Does that give us Super Bowl this year?

    I think it probably does....

To do that we need to get vs. the run and the pass. We have Star back and he sez he is feeling fine after sitting out a year.

Harry sez he is stronger and has less fat, let's here it for Harry. Leslie sez Ed should be making more splash plays this year. Let's hope Leslie opens some things up to allow Ed to thrive. Not much news from big Vernon this summer only that he is a tough waive due to his contract. At least he's huge. Lots of talk about Zimmer it sounds like he has made it but who Knows? We can't keep them all. It would be Awesome to here Daryl Johnson is flashing at end but so far no word except that he is a core STer . Lots of news about Groot looking good, let's hope to see him look like a high pick on Friday vs. the kitties. Same with AJ and Boogie. I want to see a lot of raw talent out of those three. We all do. Jerry is finally back and feels like another lock. Addison is in much better shape this year after losing a close loved one during covid ways too much for him last year. He says he is going to be better this year. Let's hope we see a ten sack player. We need everyone at their absolute best and for Leslie to get them attacking more often.

Tremaine is right up with anyone on the team as far as need goes. We need him (and Milano) to have monster years. Interceptions, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, sacks, TFLs, for those kind of plays to become routine for them. Maybe Poyer and Hyde as well. A winning front four is key for that, but so is knowing where the play is going, supreme confidence and lightening quick reflexes. Then you have to have the hands and power to stop guys in there tracks. I love Edmunds size and that he can stop guys and take them down. He's got to get that confidence down you get from being absolutely ready. And again, I think Leslie needs to let him play aggressively.

Order of players we cant afford to lose: Allen (yes, he's still #1 even with Tribusky) TRE White, He still is #2 & we need a huge year out of him. Dion Dawkins is firmly in at #3. Especially so with Nsekhe gone, he is by far our best OL and he plays the premier position (LT). ..... Stefan Diggs is #4. I don't care how deep you think we are, Diggs is our #1 WR and our only #1 WR on the roster. (Although Sanders is an excellent #2 WR in the NFL. Beasley an excellent #3. Davis an excellent #4 but we don't know how high he might go. I think he may be able to make it as a #2 eventually; we'll see. Make no mistake though, Sanders is now our #2.). Then comes Tremaine I think. He's #5 maybe this year. He never leaves the field on defense. He calls the plays. He plays STs. He's huge back there and covers a lot of ground. I'm not sure who is his back up there. After five I think we go into groups....Or maybe it is just Daryl Williams all by himself? Geez, the guy can pass block like nobody's business. What a huge difference he made for Allen last season. Protecting Allen is paramount so I guess that makes his second best protector #6. Is Milano #7? Or is this where we get groups? Milano, Morse, Hyde, Poyer, Wallace And TJ? Maybe Sanders, Beasley, And Davis here as well? I think any of our DL lose value because we have so many but on the downside we have no blue chippers. (At least not yet). But there you have it. The top 5 most valuable Bills or the top five most irreplaceable Bills .... Allen, White, Dion, Diggs and Tremaine. With a #6 guess of Daryl Williams because he protects Allen and has a rookie backing him. (Unless it's Bates?)

Here is my first attempt at the final 53 and also who I think starts come week 1 based on camp reports ahead of our first preseason game.  Obviously some of these are certain locks, and others are fluid and preseason could change some of them:

Preseason is going to be quite important I think this year to the final makeup on this roster at several key positions.  And not just for backup roles, quite a few starting roles up for grabs too as we all know.  I would say RB, TE, DE, CB2, and KR (although I think McKinzie is now a pretty strong favorite for KR/PR duties) are all spots where not only is depth chart uncertain, but the starting spot is certainly in play as well.

My first stab at the final 53 (starters listed in bold first, followed by backups)

    QB Allen - Trubisky

    RB Singletary - Moss, Brieda

FB - Gilliam (not in bold because we wont ever "start" a FB in this offense, but Gilliam will be the only FB on the roster)

    TE Hollister - Knox

WRS Diggs and Sanders - Davis, Kumerow

    Slot WR Cole - McKenzie

OL:  Dion, Jon, Mitch, Cody, Daryl - Ike, Bates, Brown, Doyle

    LDE:  Hughes - Obada, Boogie

    RDE:  AJE - Addison, Rousseau

DT:  Star & Oliver - Phillips, Butler, Zimmer

    WLB:  Milano - Smith

    MLB:  Edmunds - Matakevich

    SLB:  Klien - Adams

    LCB:  Tre - Taron

    RCB:  Levi - Dane, Lewis

    SS:  Poyer - Neal

    FS:  Hyde - Johnson, Hamlin

PR/KR:  Mckenzie (already counted above to the 53 total)

    K:  Bass

    P:  Haack

    LS:  Ferguson

    NOTES ON ABOVE:

As you can see I have AJE beating out Addison, Singletary staying atop the depth chart, Levi starting, and Hollister Beating out Knox.

At CB, I think Dane is still in the mix, but I think Levi has got a sizable enough lead that its probable he holds down the starting job week 1.

With AJE, I think they want to get some of that youth on the field and AJE has apparently been tearing up camp.  With Addison being older, rotating him in to keep him fresh makes a lot of sense even though Addison has been getting his own share of praise too and still could start come week 1.  AJE and Hughes is a nice balance of vet and youth, with a nice combo of vet and youth rotating through as well.

At RB, I think all 3 of them have had good moments in camp, but Moss is dinged up again and coming off an injury.  Singletary has been looking good in camp, so I think he holds onto his starting spot to start the season with Brieda being more used as a change of pace back.  Honestly, I think our run game is going to be a lot like SF had when Brieda was there, any given week one of them can be the lead dog and have a big game.  I think we will have a good overall ground game, with no one guy dominating the season touches as they ride the hot hand or game plan each week.

With Hollister and Knox, the guy I want to win the job is Knox just based on the matchup problems his physical ability can create.  But he didn't have a very consistent camp, and that opens up the door for Hollister, who was pretty solid in his opportunities in Seattle.  We won't know if Hollister is a true threat to beat out Knox until we get to see some in game action, but my pick right now is more based on Knox lack of momentum coming out of camp.  This is really a toss up for me right now on who will start week 1, either one of them could or even someone not even on the roster yet...see note below :)

    • NOTE:  (Queue the eye rolls) Don't rule out a move before the end of preseason for another TE if Knox and Hollister struggle at all this preseason.  I don't think Beane will make a move until he see's them in some games to get a better feel if we even need to or not.  But Beane has proven he is not afraid to make a move at any point in a season if he thinks it makes our team better.  And if Knox and Hollister struggle at all this preseason, get ready for the daily dose of "Ertz" rumors again lol, although there are more potential options beyond just Ertz that could fit into Beane's target list.

Speaking of trades, after the draft I have previously speculated, like many, that Addison (or maybe Hughes, but less likely) could be someone who gets traded if AJE, Obada, and the rookies keep impressing.  And while I won't rule it out, the more I think about it, the less likely I think it happens.  If I had to guess right now, I think we keep all 6 DE's and constantly rotate fresh legs to help wreak havoc in a year we are expected to challenge for a SB.  ESPECIALLY after how they saw the Bucs get to Mahomes and beat the Chiefs in the SB.  And right now, it appears we have 4 starting quality DE's and 2 high quality rookies for our future.  Thats a lot of pass rush fire power for us to have fresh to go after Mahomes and the Chiefs, the biggest foe in our path to a SB.

Super Bowl!    Honestly, though, I think you described the TE situation very well. Beane has got his finger on the pulse of the Bills and the rest of the NFL. If not TE, then a replacement for Cam Lewis who I think does belong on a roster of a team with Super Bowl  aspirations. Then of course, we still might do a big upgrade at DT. Someone that could be a difference maker vs. the chefs. These are the three areas where we could maybe use an upgrade if we are to beat the chefs. Maybe we're OK at DT IDK? Star had a year off Is he rejuvenated? Phillips says he had a great offseason building strength and not having to worry about rehab; is he going to blossom this year? What about Ed? What's he going to do this year? How is this defense going to put him in a place where he can make an impact? I wonder? Then Zimmer, Butler provide solid depth but a Super Bowl team often has a dominant player at DT.

Knox worked extremely hard this whole offseason. He absolutely gets an A for effort. He also has the Body of a great TE. Is he ever going to develop hands? Is he ever going to develop a passing relationship with JA? (It often seems the two are on different pages and Dawson admits he has troubles here plus JA has no problems finding his others guys so it's Knox that is the one that has to clean up his routes I think, can he? How about blocking? Again, Knox gets an A for effort, and I admit his blocking assignments are crazy hard, but he needs to be better here too. The good news is that TEs often take three years to develop and here we are entering year three. He has the tools and the effort, let's us hope he can put it all together and he gives Beane a headache trying to sign him long term. If he answers the bell, do we keep him for year four or trade him while we own his rights? Good problem and I hope it becomes a reality.

There is just no way Cam Lewis belongs on this roster. He sticks out like a sore thumb and the Bills have to upgrade here. Not sure why they're acting like everything is fine here? The Bills need to go BPA in the draft but if there is a corner next year, CB could be the ticket with our #1 pick. I feel positive the Bills are going to find somebody and bring him in before week one.

Really nice crack at 53, thanks.

    Go Bills!

CB2  is the one weak link in our defense relative to other positions. A talent like him doesn’t become available often. He can play man and zone. Apparently Urban Mayer and he cannot get along.

After the Diggs trade experience, I have become a lot more receptive to these opportunities. With our draft positions going forward, we are unlikely to get top 10 talent anyway.

And he will still be on a cost controlled rookie contract for three more years with even the signing bonus paid off.

Hmmmm, not sure CB2 is the weakest, we have tons of DL but we probably have no blue-chip DL....at least not this year anyway as Groot is too new....Blue -chip DL is probably something a Super Bowl team needs.

We maybe need a bigger-badder DL and some help at corner.

I will say this though, right now, either Wallace or White goes down we could be in trouble vs. teams like Pittsburgh, Miami and NE.... So we do need some depth.....(and perhaps an upgrade.)

I hope I'm wrong about the DL, but Star never really impressed me. Interested to see Efe, but don't even know if he can make the team.  Groot's too underdeveloped, Boogie is still just a rookie....It should be better than last year having Ed maybe stay at Three-tech, Harry's knee should be better and he sez he's stronger, I Billieve him.... Jerry's another year older but Addison had a really tough year last year..... I do have high hopes for AJ. It would be awesome to find the DL much improved this year.

I see you point. But that’s where McD and Frazier earn their keep. As much as we focus on the player v player match-up, I don’t think it’s stressed enough how imperative it is that the game plan, play calling and personnel decisions put players in a position to do what they do best.

Unless we play KC and it looks like Leslie and McD took the week off.....

So let's benchmark against the best edge rushers, as judged by everyone with 9 or more QB sacks last season (OLBs in 3-4 plus DE in 4-3):

    TJ Watt (OLB), 6'4" 252

    Trey Hendrickson (DE), 6'4" 270

    Haason Reddick (OLB) 6'1" 235

    Za'Darius Smith (OLB) 6'4" 272

    Myles Garrett (DE) 6'4" 272

    Leonard Floyd (OLB) 6'5", 240

    Romeo Okwara (DE) 6'4", 263

    Jason Pierre-Paul (OLB) 6'5, 275

    Brian Burns (EDGE), 6'5", 250

    Khalil Mack (OLB), 6'3" 269

    Montez Sweat (EDGE) 6'6", 262

    Emmanuel Ogbah (DE) 6'4", 275

    Oliver Vernon (DE) 6'2", 262

Those are college weights, so any of those guys may have adopted a heavier or a lighter playing weight

I think the take-home is, for success in rushing the passer, there's not one "right weight".

There are guys like Hendrickson, Smith, and Pierre-Paul who are heavier.

There are guys like Watt, Floyd, Burns, and Sweat who are lighter.

It probably depends upon specifics of their individual frame and the weight at which they get the most power.

At 6'5" and 260, Epenesa seems as though he'd slot right in

It sounds as though your son's coaches want him to play heavier, and evidently so did Epenesa's college coaches, but the Bills differ.

Bruuuuuuuuccccce played at around 265 and he was never overpowered.......

    IDK? Bruce was 2" shorter....

As long as AJ has really developed those gluteus maximuses....

Don't think I'd call it a "steal" but I do like the contract. The deal only trails Mahomes - which is right where it should be.

Allen could have demanded more $$$ or less time. In a couple three years his pay is going to be low.

We have him for eight more freakin' years!!! The Bills are set to be great for eight more years.

It could be so that in four years, we could build a Super Bowl team reasonably because our QB salary at that time won't be nearly as high in relation to all QBs.  We could also go for a Super Bowl next season as Josh's huge money doesn't kick in yet, I think...IDK?  I just got this feeling we're going to build a Super team next season..... That by next year,Groot is going to be our front four blue chipper that we need so badly.... and that he is going to have help in Ed, AJ and Boogie....

Where'd you hear that? I'd love for it to be true but I don't remember hearing about any flashes from Wildgoose.

I haven't heard anything but I'm thinking cam isn't a great player and you really need to be a great corner to play at that size.

My thoughts on Wildgoose is that they liked his numbers: size, arm length, speed, athleticism and they think he's a comer. In essence, a nice lump of clay to mold. I think he will take time and really should be on the practice squad this year. I think we need a. Vet in that spot, behind Wallace and Jackson. Corners can thin out in a blink and I don't think we want Wildgoose in there this year. Like most fans I was very surprised we didn't take a corner by the the third round. The Bills really haven't explained this yet either.

Wouldnt everyone freak out if the Bills ended up signing not one player, not two, but three players before the end of camp?

LOL, Ertz, a corner and a DT!

    C'mon chefs, let's go!

    Lets have at it!

Is there a DT available that won't budge vs. a run game?

I don't think the CB needs to be expensive necessarily. Just a good fit for solid depth.

Maybe draft someone to tryand beat out Wallace or Jackson next year.

How valuable is Taron Johnson in FA I wonder? Is he going to be another McD player that isn't seen too valuable in any defense but McD/Frazier's?  Could be. I really like him. From his rookie year on. A great fourth round pick. I hope we can keep him. I think there's a reason he immediately starts after being injured. He is easily the best we have at nickel. He's a sure starter for us. I think there's a good chance the market isn't too crazy for him. I guess that is an excellent thing about our defense, no one else plays it.

At least, I don't think anyone plays D like us.....

All we have to go on is what the reporters tell us, so who knows.

As for Kumerow, I don't get it.  The guy sounds so good, but he keeps getting released.  He bounced around before the Packers got him and liked him a lot and cut him.  The Bills had him and liked him and cut him last season, just before Christmas. Holy Toledo.  Then New Orleans grabbed him.  And then they let him go too.  And after getting cut by the Bills right before Christmas, he CAME BACK.

This is the life, I suppose, for a talented athlete who isn't quite elite.  But in his case, he seems to stay right on that knife's edge for years and years.

My prediction is that the Bills will showcase him in preseason, and then trade him to a team in need of a good solid receiver.  Note, though, that if the Bills do that, he probably won't be coming back again.

Wanted to add that I do get you about a Kumerow. While this all could be legit and the coaches are thinking Kumerow is the sixth right now it also could be largely fabricated for the Bills to get a sixth rounder from someone as the Bills wisely covet any and all draft picks. (I really liked their trade down this year to get another sixth rounder. I think Beane has learned thru self-scouting that trading up is generally unwise. You do it when your almost positive and really need that player, but that is it. Tradedown get more shots. Or stay put, You are not sure at all how other teams rank their board (very often completely different from yours). I think we're seeing that now, Beane is learning....

Football is so much fun to follow. I can't wait to see how our young players are advancing. Even Tremaine still. Is Leslie just blowing smoke about Edmunds ability to make more splash plays this year? While he definitely is young enough, it feels like he has been here forever. Then after Tremaine's  it's the 2019 draft. Ed, Cody, Knox and Devin could have super monster years for us or sort of just be there. Which is it going to be?! Then the 2020 draft and AJ! Can AJ beat his draft position? Match it? I think he is shoe in to match it, but I want him to be like a #1 pick! Can little Moss be a power back?! Can Davis keep his huge role in our offense? Does he or Sanders get more targets? (I think it goes Diggs, Sanders, Beasley, Davis, in that order. Sanders is a very good WR. Then we drafted Fromm, Bass, Hodgins and Dane Jackson! That could turn out to be a great draft! Especially considering we didn't have a #1 pick or that it was Diggs! Bass seems like one of the better picks in the whole draft! What a kicker!

Finally we come to this year's draft.... Did Beane outsmart everyone? Should Groot have been drafted in the top ten? Top five?  I sure hope so! The 2021 draft was all about getting better, getting bigger, getting tougher along the lines! If we did it I see multiple Super Bpwls in our future!

It is kind of odd...Kumerow is being talked about like he's a budding superstar, and yet he's 29 years old and has done next to nothing in the league up to this point. So what happened? I know there are a lot of talented guys who never really get a shot, but this seems hard to fathom.

It happens! Look no farther than Buffalo. Look no farther back than two seasons. So Alexander was discovered by..... Rex Ryan. The only good move he made. But man, he was good. His STs were superb but he brought it at LB equally well.

Let Buffalo be the place where older drifters find their game!

Gilleslee, DE Phillips and that karate-lacrosse- STer - WR made big in Buffalo as well recently.... All three from Miami!

    Let Brenda be the fourth!

    Go Bills!
