Report: Bills interested in UFA TE Jesse James
BringBackFlutie replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah. I mean, if we could have someone as reliable as Chandler again, it'd be nice. At this point, I don't need a game breaker, just somebody who can catch the ball, or pick up a yard when you really need it. We've been missing that from a lot of skill positions for a little while now. -

Yes. They have trouble holding onto it so look like they're fetalling around the ball, and sometimes rely too much on their height to hold it away from the defender. KB does that crap too. It's kind of weird looking. I suppose it's just weak hands. -

I searched the thread to see if anyone else said "Scott Chandler" before I did, because they're the same person. From height/weight, to speed, style of play- hell, even the way he catches the ball is like Chandler. Blah. Tall body with a great catch radius, but not a great blocker, slow, goes down easily. -
It's what you, indy, and others have been saying. Higher completion percentage is often a simple matter of processing things in a way that you pick the throw with a better chance of completion more often. I'm pretty sure Beane said the exact same thing. Something like, "we're gonna work with Josh so that he understands taking more throws that will turn into completions." ...and by the way- raw rookie QBs almost never process reads fully. You can teach that. What you can't teach is seeing it, registering it. and instantly releasing to a spot where the wr can make a break at the ball. Josh already does this, which is so much to be excited about. So, in the context of Josh Allen, low completion percentage is not only a poor indicator of accuracy, but should be expected, and a bit of a relief to be his only "problem."

I parked there once. Scarfed down some Italian sausage on a mini grill before rushing in to watch us get eliminated from the playoffs by Robert Royal in the back of the end zone.

You're absolutely right. If his completion percentage doesn't improve over time, the common factor of Josh Allen's general playing style will eventually be more positively correlated to a low completion percentage than other factors relating to his job. If he weren't to ever change over that time, the one thing that, statistically, could never be correlated with such, is his level of accuracy.

Taking the statement literally- totally agree with you. He has some of the most exotic concepts and schemes, maybe ever, and can insert a lot of wrinkles and adapt certain aspects of his D with different personnel (from what I've seen and heard). His downfall, though, is requiring a defense that is EXTREMELY intelligent and able to adapt pre-snap, as well as knowing when to be on the field and otherwise. So I suppose my initial response assumed Stephen A's comment to be in relation to Rex as an overseer of defense, which is iffy (although you're right that we haven'tseen him as a DC in years).

Mike Tirico: Josh Allen Energized the Bills Organization

It's the pink dice. -
Bruh. I get all that, and I totally get the premise of the OP and I'm on board. I don't understand this analogy: "But how much does it really matter if you have, for example, 2 QBs who throw 30 passes. QB#1 throws 25 into the WR's hands, 3 just out of reach of his outstretched arms and 2 throws end up 5 yards away. QB #2 throws 23 into the WR's hands and 7 just out of reach of his outstretched arms. QB#1 might have those twitter worthy WTF throws you can point to, but was he really less accurate?" You say "accurate" at the end there. I want to know, by what definition? I can't understand the analogy when applying my definition. That's all. I thought I knew what you were saying when I assumed you misspoke. ?

What does that have to do with the part you put in bold? It was my impression that you were making an argument that putting a ball out of reach, whether by a small or large margin, is still putting the ball out of reach (all of those passes are uncatchable). Therefore, regardless of where the ball is when it's out of reach, both cases result in the same completion %. I was merely nitpicking your terminology, because you said both QBs are equally "accurate," rather than both have the same "completion %." I figured it would be helpful for me to point that out to you, since a lot of your OP revolves around the idea that completion % != accuracy. ...And obviously I want 83%.
-
Actually, yes. The QB who threw the two passes 5 yards out is less accurate, as his misses weren't closer to the target. Accuracy (as @oldmanfan has said a few times in this thread) is the ability to consistently land in the area of the target. Precision is the ability to consistently hit a small area, regardless of its relation to the target. Obviously, you want both, but accuracy is better in the NFL, because it will at least give the receiver a chance to catch the pass, whereas precision, on its own, could mean that the pass is NEVER near the receiver. Now, I just said the above to lend clarity for other posters. As far as the actual situation of Allen sailing some throws into the middle of nowhere, it doesn't make a difference in completion percentage between him and the guy who doesn't, but still misses. Like you alluded- the results on the stat chart are the same. I'll also say that I like the head-scratchers more than the near-misses, because head-scratchers are probably an indication of miscommunication, rather than inaccuracy. So in these situations, given miscommunication as a valid reason for the miss, and taking those throws out of the equation, Allen is actually more accurate, and has a higher completion percentage than the other QB.

You're totally gonna get that automated response thing about misleading titles. -
Am I the only one that would feel awkward if I walked into the office to sign a contract, and a giant promotional picture of me was on the wall behind my chair?

Nick Foles Contract

Means less as far as whether we should care that one of them ends up in the AFCE, too. So what if Wentz became a dolphin? Beat the best to be the best, and I believe, in a few years, Josh will be just that.
