Josh Allen vs Carson Wentz - Rookie Season
BringBackFlutie replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with all of this, Shaw. It's the same as my feelings- it's a lot harder to take a guy who can make all the throws and refuses to make the easy ones take them, than to get a guy who can only make the easy throws and hope he'll learn how to take the harder ones. Your narration of the situation is a good example of that difference in difficulty. ...But I think the the difference in skill sets between Brady and Allen should be reconciled in Allen's play. While Allen can probably say, "yeah, I can take those throws, why not?" he also has the ability to make 30 yard frozen rope throws that thread the needle on a deep crosser and/or can open a receiver. While you don't want him always doing this, he has skills that you want him to utilize at the right times. Brady is a great QB and it's silly to think Allen could "easily" do what he does- I get it. But for sake of argument, let's assume he can. Now, in that context, would you take the guy that does all the things Brady does, or would you take a guy that does all those things, and then, on the play Brady has to throw it away, this guy completes a 30 yard pass that's open because he has the arm strength to make it so? -
Josh Allen vs Carson Wentz - Rookie Season

Eh... I think he's always gonna have a bit of a gunslinger mentality- perhaps closer to Favre's than most, but I think Allen is smarter and can become more refined. I don't think he'll throw as many picks as Favre, and I think he'll use his mobility a lot to find more open guys and make less questionable throws. I'd say, from a playing style (not necessarily success) standpoint, Allen will be like Aaron Rodgers/Steve Young, in mobility and making opportunities, with a high tendency towards Favre, in aggression. Basically, I think calling him a Favre or a Brady/Brees, is too one dimensional. I think he'll have a very diverse style of play, due to his diverse skill set and intelligence. And the aforementioned comparisons are only what we can see about him today. I don't think we've seen half of what he can/will be. I think he's still got a LOT of molding to do. He's very young and inexperienced. A coach can, essentially, take his skill set and make him whatever they want. Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm overly positive about him. -
I mean, I'm not generally a grammar Nazi, but come on... Some of those paragraphs were collections of re-worded sentences to say the same thing three times in a row. ...Painful. It's also difficult for me to focus on any article that contains the (made-up) word "irregardless."

That article was terribly written. Hard to follow what he was saying at times.

CB EJ Gaines 1 year deal

I like that idea. That's how you HAVE to do it, I think. High-priced free agents almost always underwhelm, and then you're stuck with their contract and you can't effectively build a roster. You may as well get cheaper, still motivated FAs to fill some holes. Then you can get that star talent in the draft, where you can pick the one that fits your scheme, they're young/moldable, and you don't have to pay them $100 mil contracts. -

Josh Allen, Sicko Mode !!!
BringBackFlutie replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with you- he leaves the pocket early and he has done that since college. However, I think his general pocket awareness is already very good, and that he tends not to trust what he's feeling because of repeated cases of early pocket breakdown (both in college and now). If we want him to hang out in the pocket a bit longer (or more consistently), we need to develop that O-Line. -

That's a cool song. I liked this a lot, but I wish they'd sped up more of the Allen throws. The music would speed up and then they'd cut into a long floating pass play, lol. -

Haha I didn't even notice he did that. There was a time in, I think the preseason? Where the pocket collapsed on him and he squeaked out the front of it, but as he did, someone got pushed into him and knocked the ball out of his hands, and he just snatched it back and carried on. I also liked when he escaped the pocket against the dolphins and swam his ball hand over the DT as he juked the guy in front of him. -

Yeah. I noticed. Peyton Manning was DEADLY when he was in that zone. Textbook pocket footwork. It was a joy to watch him before the neck thing. He perfectly embodied every aspect of the quarterback position. -

Honestly, that's what I noticed in his very first preseason game, and I've been sold ever since. On his first drop back I saw poise. When he drops back, he is immediately focused. No dear in headlights look to him like we've seen with basically every other Bills QB the past 15 years not named Fitzpatrick. His head is down and he's working the play. While he sits there, he never stays still- he chops his feet and points towards each read. When he makes a decision, the ball is out FAST. While he moves around, he makes sudden movements, and he runs around a lot, but he never looks panicked. He actually looks in control. Like, you get the feeling that if he can't get it done, nobody can. He just LOOKS like a QB when he plays. These are things that you can't easily teach. I think that Josh is going to be special. Not just because he has the talent and he works hard, but he is a true QB, which means he has a template to fill with all that hard work. -

OMG. Guys. Mario Williams said in his visit to Buffalo, his favorite thing he learned was that "you can see deers in your backyard!!!" -
How did you become a Bills fan?
BringBackFlutie replied to JPL7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I actually grew up thinking that the Super Bowl was the only game the Bills played, and that they just did it every year. I feel like this was just a case of you having a good enough confirmation to follow the team you should have all along. I transplanted to VA (from Rochester), long ago, and I met a girl from Binghamton, who was a Bengals fan. She just liked their colors and Carson Palmer. She eventually learned to love and watch Bills games with me. About a year into the relationship, she had all Bills gear, and just sort of switched over, since it never made sense for a WNYer to like the Bengals anyway.
