Bills QB Situation. Time for a Reality Check
#34fan replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No way is a new coach, for a troubled franchise, gonna let Fitzpatrick put him under further scrutiny. Fitz is SO gone. -
Don Banks of CNNSI has his 1st Mock Draft
#34fan replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
All the more reason to go defense in the first two rounds. Unlike last year, none of these young QB's are ready. -Not even Geno. If I ever get my mock together it'll probly go like this: Rd#1: Best MLB available RD#2: Best 4-3 OLB available RD#3: Best Safety available RD#4: Best WR available RD#5: Best RB available RD#6: RYAN NASSIB -
Don Banks of CNNSI has his 1st Mock Draft

You're right. Because the Bills don't have any priors for doing stupid things with high picks. What amazes me most about people is the tendency that the dummer ones have of disregarding context when discussing hypothetical situations. Her are two things I know for sure. 1)Minority report was THE aboslute WORST movie I ever saw. 2)People who aren't interested in speculation, should stay the hell off MOCK DRAFT THREADS. -Good night, children. -

Echoing that sentiment. Someone should get the message to OBD that there's just TWO (2) QB's worth taking in the 1st, -Geno Smith, and Tyler Wilson. That's it. Geno will be gone LONG before #8, which is good because I prefer Tyler Wilson anyway. -
Jamarcus Russell Making a Comeback
#34fan replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd take another look at Vince Young first. VY actually performed at a high level in the NFL. He put together alot of game-winning drives, and is STILL twice the athlete and passer that ole "Purple Drank" ever was. Sorry, but I am 100% done with Jamar-curse. -
Tyler Wilson - QB - Arkansas
#34fan replied to The Beautiful East's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
!!! Well Played... -But in all seriousness, I watched plenty of Tyler Wilson this past season and the one before. He did better with Petrino, but he has some very solid attributes. I think the "small hands" argument is a valid one, but Wilson puts a vulcan death-grip on the football, and puts plenty of spin on it. I'd be pushing alot harder for him If I didn't believe this to be a once-in-a-generation draft for LB's and safeties. You look at guys like DJ Swearinger, Matt Elam, Mant'i Teo and Alec Ogletree, and you see a chance to set up a championship defensive backfield. As much as I like Wilson, I wouldn't pass that up. -

This isn't gonna sound right, but Wilson uses his eight inches better than Nassib uses ten. -Just an observation. -

I have no problem whatsoever with Wilson @8, assuming we don't go D... I think he's pretty good. Powerful arm. IMHO he's a much better athlete than barf-ley, and simply LIGHT YEARS ahead of Nassib in every meaningful way. I would have liked to secure some of those KILLER LB's, and safeties, but Wilson is not a bad pick @8 if you really need a QB. -
CUT 'EM ALL! -I've always believed that Brad Smith had untapped potential, but it's too late in the day to start that kind of work. Fitz, Brad, George... Happy trails to you! it's a business... Fitz and McGee aren't up to industry standard for their respective jobs. There's too much good stuff in this draft, for OBD to be sentimental over a bunch of guys who don't pull their weight anymore. -NEXT!

David Lee to be Jets QB Coach? (now official)
#34fan replied to ChasBB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My thoughts right down to the letter. -Sure looks like big Rexy has lost his way. -
Plenty to see and investigate between now an April... Lots of homework for the pro-scouts as well as for us amateurs. As I've said before, this draft represents a rare opportunity on the defensive side of the ball. No question the Teo kid has issues. I just think I may have written his value off too quickly. While re-visiting his performances over the last three years, I came to the conclusion that there are far WORSE picks @ 8. And as some of you have pointed out, there could be far BETTER ones too. All I can say is if we took Teo at #8, and then double-dipped for another solid LB in a later round, -I'd be at peace with it until the kid let me down.
-
I agree that Stephen Morris is a very good QB prospect. Light years ahead of a kid like Nassib, IMO. I can also apreciate what kids like Werner and Jordan bring to the table... Jarvis Jones is a good 4-3 OLB, but he's had his share of missing-in-action games too. My apologies for getting all Philosophical on you, but I lean toward drafting WEAPONS, as opposed to just good, or even really good players that just happen to to fit our scheme. To use an example from Last year's draft, Ryan Tanneyhill is a very good QB. He's quick, athletic, and makes some good throws.. Andrew Luck, by contrast, is a weapon. -He makes ALL the throws, and then some. He leads men, and can finish games on the strength of his arm alone.. See the difference? Brandon Weeden is a solid QB prospect... Russell Wilson and RG3 however, are both weapons. The skill-sets owned by these rookies make them lethal to opposing defenses. Teo is a weapon because when he's on his game, his instincts and coverage skills represent a significant threat to opponents passing, and ground games. He can be very disruptive at times, and must be accounted for. If our needs at DE were as glaring as our need at LB, I'd whole-heartedly support Jordan or Werner at #8. However, the fact is, we can pick up a guy like SMU's Margus Hunt at DE later in this draft. -A real weapon when he's up and running, but available at a discount, because he's from a non AQ conference, and doesn't get tons of press. Kelvin Sheppard, Nick Barnett, and Kirk Morrison simply aren't that effective. Any one (or two) of those guys can go, as far as I'm concerned. Nigel Bradham looks very good, but adding Teo could really trick that linbacking corp out. I'm not trying to say that Mant'i Teo is a must for us at 8... I'm just saying that given his body of work, I don't mind the idea as much I used to.
-
I had to get myself mentally away from Wannstedt's sad, dysfunctional 4-3, and picture Teo in the shifting fronts, and disguised blitz's of Pettine's Hybrid. When you do that, it's easier to see Teo as a disruptive force against the pass, and an enforcer against the run. I realize that side of his game didn't show much vs. Alabama, but it was clear in several others.
-
Better athletes, perhaps... But are better athletes necessarily difference makers? My point is this; -as much as I'd like to believe differently, ND doesn't go undefeated in the regular season without Mant'i Teo... Louis Nix was huge all year as well, but Teo clearly elevated that defensive backfield when he played. All season ND's QB situation was a question mark at best... You can't say Teo didn't do his part to keep the Irish from getting scored on.
-
If you're sayin "NO" for Teo @8, What's your major hangup with him? -Just not good enough? Do you agree that he's still young, and should be allowed to grow as a player and a person?
-
I ragged on him pretty hard. But the fact is he does some special things. We took Tank Carder Last Draft, and IMHO Te'o penetrates, and reads better than Carder ever could. Right now, I'd say our current LB situation is pretty bad. -Teo could really help out, IF Pettine can get him trained right.
-
I dunno... -You're a couple of months away from everything you've ever wanted, and you're gonna step in front of who? -Eddie Lacy? And maybe lock horns with Barrett Jones? -First team SEC at three different offensive positions? Damn Kid gave his QB a love-tap, and he flew ten frickin' yards! Sorry, but regardless of how good I was, I might opt-out of any direct confrontation with those two. I may be wrong, but it sure seemed like that's what he did.
-
IMWO, This draft is to defensive backfield/secondary players, what last year's draft was for QB's... Maybe even better. Much like the latter, the former presents a unique opportunity for teams WILLING TO PULL THE TRIGGER. I was 100% ant'i -Mant'i until I realized what this Defense could do with a disruptive playmaker in the middle of the field.
-
I thought the very same thing, and I can totally understand why you'd say that. I watched Te'o in that game very closely, and after a while, it was clear that he wanted NO PART of those OT's, and/or punishing RB's... -I think Mant'i was satisfied with his body of work, and at that point made a BUSINESS decision to stay out of harms way. -It was a bit cowardly perhaps, but I can't say I blame him

I'd been making fun of poor Man'ti Teo for weeks before his public "catfish" scandal. I've called him things like Man'-purse, Man'-boobs, -The Lyin' Hawaiian... All said with good-natured fun in mind. However, I have publicly questioned his speed, drive, and tackling ability as a MLB... I now believe that this was extremely pre-mature on my part... Admittedly, I was considering just a tiny part of the "big picture" with a kid like Mant'i Teo. No, Mant'i isn't as fast as I'd prefer, nor do I see the relentlessness in pursuit of a Luke Kuechly, but he does some other important things very well.. For example, the kid reads a QB as good as any LB out there, as seen at 2:34, 3:50, and 3:17 of this video. -He's very instinctive in his pursuit. His tackling may not fly at the pro level, but hey, -he isn't a pro. That can be taught as long as he's willing to learn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCPuKJyoSvE Then there's the Michigan game... (youtube.com/watch?v=wa7E9X-1nN0) At 1:40, and 2:26 you can see that the kid has hands, and very good ball skills. He covers space, and closes gaps well... and again, his instinctiveness compensates fo him not being very fleet-of-foot. I wasn't allowed to post media of the Stanford game either (youtube.com/watch?v=tEmgY4f9g8E) but if you go there, you'll see examples of great penetration and recognition. I watched this game live, and saw Mant'i take a few plays off, but overall, I thought he did well against a very good Stanford rushing attack. Then there's this: Bills new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was asked in a 1-on-1 interview with Buffalobills.com if he’s married to the 3-4 base defense coming to Buffalo. Here was his response. “I’m not. Again it’s a situation where I think people try to compartmentalize too much and just broad stroke it 3-4, 4-3, what are you? And my answer to that question is yes to all of the above,” Pettine told Buffalobills.com. ”We are a multiple front, attacking, pressure-style defense. We’re going to play man coverage, we’re going to play zone coverage. What we’re going to do defensively is take advantage of what our players do well." I've come to realize that the question isn't so much what Mant'i Teo is now, but rather what a DC like Pettine can turn this kid into, which given everything I know about both, could be a FEARSOME run-stopper, pass-rusher, and multi-use tackling drone. Then I get to thinking what could happen if we take a good "later-round" 4-3 OLB prospect like Devonte Holloman: youtube.com/watch?v=Teqxo_K2kOc[/media] in addition to Te'o... Add to that an outstanding FS prospect like Florida's Matt Elam: youtube.com/watch?v=rREjDTpTedE Mmm.... I can smell the sacks already! Do I have character concerns about Mant'i? -You betcha. As well as questions regarding his overall mental fitness, and leadership skills, but the bottom line is that nobody's perfect... certainly not in the NFL... If Mant'i can learn from his mistakes, and re-gain control of his personal life, this could end up being really good for Bills nation. Much better, IMHO, than wasting a high-pick on a local QB who makes very few next-level throws, and who put together just two decent seasons in a four year collegiate career!

Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
#34fan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If this New OC is worth 25 cents, he will not pass up a chance (if there is one) to grab a kid like Tyler Wilson. If OBD truly has a gun to Buddy's head, he should take Tyler... Tyler is a kid with actual Talent. My mock isn't done yet, but I'm 75% sure that I won't take a QB at all in the first or second round.
