What two QB'S do we draft and in what rounds?
#34fan replied to Dat Dude's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gailey hitched his NFL career to Fitzpatrick. -How exciting was that? Perhaps we should file that decision under the "Scary for sure" side of the emotional spectrum. Once again, NO TO NASSIB. -
After all that stat-dredging, it's good to hear you admit that the eye test is still the best way. the idea that you can make crucial decisions by staring tirelessly at a bunch of numbers may work in the stock market, but not so much in dealings with actual people. Russell Wilson passed my eye test in his last year at NC state. -Still, on the chance I could be decieved, I gave him the year at Wisconsin to live up, or down to the hype. -Well, we all know how that stint ended. I WAS SOLD. However, in pursuit of a prototype, pro scouts missed out on an absolute super-hero in disguise. This year I watched more college football than in previous years, and came to the conclusion that there were MAYBE two QB's worth taking in the first round. Neither of which is ready to run a practice-squad scrimmage, IMO... They are ALL PROJECTS. -Some better than others, but projects nonetheless. In looking at defense however, It became clear that quite a few kids were ready for TC competition. The Gamecock's DJ Swearinger, and Devonte Holloman, are two kids that stood out in my game watching AKA "eye testing" this past season. Some folks look for raw speed, others for size... My big thing is awareness and instinct. Still, you can't help but notice when some kids play faster, hit harder, and finish more beautifully than other players on the field. In fact they don't look like kids out there at all, but pro's-in-waiting. Zeke Ansah, and Matt Elam, also passed my eye test, whereas, Jarvis Jones, -A prospect I was actually excited about, lost luster for me down the stretch. By contrast, Mant'i Teo was a kid I yawned at throughout the majority of his ND carreer. It wasn't until recently that I noticed some significant things about him. Namely, that his anticipation, and awareness gave him superior lateral coverage skills. I also noticed that Mant'i has the ability to "use" other defensive players in order to set up big plays for himself. -A detraction some might say, but I beg to differ... If Mant'i has the presence of mind to consistently bring down tipped balls, and cover fumbles created by other players, then thats a guy I want in my defensive backfield. Surround a kid like that with other talented defensive players, and you have a 1-2 punch that will be hard to pass or run against. I've made fun of Te'o, and mocked him extesively, but I just can't see a better pick for us at #8, other than maybe Ansah if he's still there. Either way, If we score just three out of the five "eye-test" passers mentioned here, I believe things will start getting better for Bills Nation IN A HURRY. Drafting a project QB at #8 to be groomed by an inexperienced OC and Fitzpatrick, sounds like another wasted pick to me.

Can't help but agree. -Fitz isn't a serviceable backup, and is even questionable as third stringer. -I'd just as soon be rid of all relics of past failures on this team. I say cut him, and be done with it.

Fantastic research. However, it was one hell of alot of work to tell us what we already knew. -We'd better find a QB to have any shot at becoming a championship franchise. -Easier said than done, this year anyway. In the '13 draft, the Defensive "cornerstone" players are there for the taking. -Franchise Quarterbacks not so much. Why not take what's given rather than trying to reach for something that clearly is not there?
-
Ding!-ding!-ding! Superior 'D' has been Tom Brady's achilles heel every time he's been bounced from the playoffs! -Helloooo, OBD... Anyone paying attention over there? Unless there's and exact clone of RG3 available @ 8, We should go HARD on 'D' this draft... The old timers playing Bocce ball in the park near my house, are more motivated than our LB's. -If we're ever going to build that Championship D, this would be the year to go 'all-in', and get it done.

Hard not to be impressed with the way Ansah POWERS through blocks. He has alot of raw power, and understated intelligence to his game. This gives Ansah the edge over a guy like Jordan, who gets fended off by the occaisional tight-end, and sometimes stymied if he can't beat his man off the edge. The thirty extra pounds of muscle on Ziggy goes a hell of a long way. Grooming Jordan as a sitch pass-rusher LB/TE essentially Vrabelizing him, makes the most sense thus far. -He's fast, but he's not coming off the edge on every down as a pure DE. That's just my opinion of this super-talented kid. I'd back away from him at the potential #8 spot, in favor of a run-stuffing LB with coverage skills. -Dion is versatile for sure, but doesn't have the type of versatility to make an immediate impact on the team that chooses him.
-
Our LB's SUCK. This would be a great year to replace all of them with the exception of Nigel Bradham. George Wilson may be a real nice guy, but DJ Swearinger would be a fantastic upgrade at SS. -That's JMHO. Jairus Byrd would be replaced by the faster, more physical, Matt Elam. OBD is nuts if they don't take advantage of the SEC's bumper crop of defensive backfield personnel. If Pettine is as serious as he says, we should be cutting a lot of dead weight, and seein alot of new faces in that secondary -YAY!

QB Matchmaker (bucky brooks article)

That said, I'd still go D in the first, AND second round. Tyler Wilson is a great prospect. -Marcus Mariota is an even better one. Well worth the wait, IMO. -
QB Matchmaker (bucky brooks article)

I was hoping he could come out last year. Tyler has the potential to be a very, very, good QB. WORLDS away from a kid like Nassib, who, IMO, has the most meager talent of any QB in this draft. -
With Pettine talking about shifting 3/4-4/3 fronts, I'm not sure the two are mutually exclusive. Versatility is key here. Demontre moore makes hell o' tackles at various spots on the field. Defensively speaking he's Johnny-on-the-spot. If I were looking for a 4-3DE or 3-4OLB I'd move him way up there. -Kid's got a whole buncha game.

 Fans are FINALLY coming around about what it takes to be champions in this league... I hope Buddy doesn't cave to the pundits who would FORCE him to pick a junk QB in this draft. Fear-based decision making is an invite to dysfunction. If Buddy seizes this moment and drafts the championship Defense AVAILABLE IN THIS DRAFT, all his past screw-ups will be forgiven.

After you wipe the foam from your mouth, you should probably re-read my post. It may take a few times, but I promise you'll get it eventually. -
I've seen about 20 of Nassib's games, and trust me, he doesn't get much better at all. He seems less lousy than he is because he played in the Big East where the expectations aren't high for QB's. And he looks good to you because we've had crap at QB for a while, and Nassib is a local, available, product. But the fact is, he has severely limited mobility, mediocre arm strength, and simply can't make alot of the throws. This kid is a solid 4th rounder. -And that's being generous. If not for a few desperate GM's trying to go back in time, we're talking 6th rd-UDFA for this kind of talent.

If it isn't a QB, I hope it's...

If I were picking today, -It'd be the Man-Purse. All this catfish foolishness is disturbing, but Teo can play. Ogletree also has 1st round talent, but not as much instinct, or lateral movement as I like out of a MLB. After that, I'd grab a kid like DJ Swearinger for SS in the second, Then perhaps Devonte Holloman 4-3OLB in the third F___, a quarterback. -There's MAYBE two worth taking before the 4th round. -
I expect much of the interest surrounding him to cool down before th draft. He should have a good combine, but I expect some scouts will shy away due to his limited experience with the game.
-
I was talking about the possibility of Flynn having a case of Deja Vu. If you've been triggered, I suggest you reset yourself immediately. People get banned around here for much less.

What two QB'S do we draft and in what rounds?

Dude.... Please get it through your head that last draft featured an uncommonly large crop of very good QBs. It was a blue-moon opportunity for FO's that knew what was up. -Some teams capitalized. Others (The Bills) did not. The notion that we can re-live the QB bonanza of 2012 is simply NUTTY... -Even nuttier is the idea that we should double-down on this year's meager talent with the hopes of hitting the franchise QB Lotto. I think if we're going to double down on anything this draft it should be defensive players. Specifically at LB and S. This draft features a bumper-crop of exceptional defenders. IMO, missing the boat on this unique opportunity should constitute Buddy's resignation letter. -
LOL! -This why putting a mock together this year is gonna be hard! Respectfully disagree on Hunt. -If this guy gets taught a little technique.... Fughettaboutit. Gimme a guy from less-than ideal circumstances that had to adapt, and earn his keep, ANY DAY over some of these hype-monsters. I'd SAVE a spot for a worker like Hunt on my roster.
-
Somewhat leaner than I'd prefer, no question, but still a freak of an athlete. My sleeper at DE is really SMU's Margus Hunt... -6'8"... 277lbs... 4.7 40 yd dash! -Now that's freaky my freinds.

BEEP...BEEP...BEEP...I can hear the DUMP TRUCK of cash backing up to Flacco's house now. He is going NOWHERE. Tarvaris is well... Tarvaris. -No clue whatsoever of what we're going to get out of him in TC, but maybe that was Gailey's fault/plan. Two guys that are looking for good homes stand out here. -Matt Moore and Drew Stanton. Drew can Play. It didn't always show at DET, (Mostly because of injury), but he definitely has skill as a passer. Matt Moore has a good arm, and solid starting experience. IMO, he'd be a more than adequate as a stop-gap. Both QB's have great attitudes, which makes for easy transitioning with a young OC. Seneca Wallace? !!! -That will be the extent of my commentary on that guy. -
Yah.. "like locker" Except that Jake Locker can tuck that rock and outrun anything on the field -He did it all through college. My friends, this is truly a year for D.... "D" as in Devonte Holloman (4-3olb), and DJ Swearinger (SS) -I wouldn't even be against Dion Jordan (3-4olb 4-3 DE) Honorable mention goes to Matt Elam (S)... Yes, I know he's an "M", but still...
-
A) WORST. DEDUCTION. EVER. B) By my faulty science, putting Flynn in a similiar situation as last year, might prompt him to force a different outcome. -It's just a sneaky way to get the guy to play his @ss off.
-
I agree thoroughly with Item one, and partially with Item two. The only thing I'd change is WHO Jason Cambell would be competing for the #1 spot with. For my money, he'd have to duke it out with Matt Flynn for the starting Job. -Not to invoke the race card, but Flynn isn't gonna be keen on losing another starting job to an African-American QB... Once TC heats up, I'm sure he'll elevate his play in order to distance himself from the pack. Meanwhile, whatever clipboard-stand QB we draft will get first hand knowledge of what a QB competition is really like without necessarily being involved. So to re-cap: Pick up Cambell. Pick up Flynn. Take a project in round 5 or 6. -This path leaves us with a bona fide starter, serviceable backup, and promising future. All this, of course is predicated on the assumption that NONE of our current QB's will be on the TC roster.
