Forget big WR's with the first pick, draft Eric Ebron
#34fan replied to Proteus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I get that he's good. What i'm saying is, I'm not sure how effective a pro he would make... Honestly, you have to give Bryn Renner SOME credit for Ebron's success... Despite having a relatively weak arm, Renner was johnny-on-the-spot with some of those throws... I watch the games, I think "nice throw by Renner" But hey, I'm still looking into it.. He could be first round bust, OR this could just be a case of me NOT wanting to take a TE @9... -
I don't know about anyone else, but I thought Kiko was a STUD at Oregon. He will absolutely make great plays if given the opportunity. I gathered from your quote that you think Sammy Watkins is great. -Personally, I'm not so sure. At the moment, I'd put him in your "quality" category. Your statement was that you thought two "quality" players were better than one "great" one. I can't agree. I'm foolish enough to think we can get both, if we're serious about it. Drafting quality should be the goal regardless of the round your picking in. Drafting greatness, however, is where the pros earn their money. Greatness can be hard to spot, and once you find it, it may take time to develop and nurture it. This year is tough.. So many QUALITY players make finding the great ones more difficult. I though EJ was the guy for us in the '13 draft. -NOT because I thought he was great, but because I knew Buddy was taking a QB no matter what. -EJ was the best in my book. Question: Who were the great players taken in the '13 draft?

Forget big WR's with the first pick, draft Eric Ebron

I get visions of the word "BUST" in red block letters whenever someone mentions Eric Ebron in the 1st. I know he's fast, but I just can't see round one talent there. -OR round two for that matter... Lotta holes in his game. -Not to mention hands issues... Not a true get-me-what-I-need TE, IMO.. I like him in round three, maybe even four... Wouldn't really think about him before that. -
Buddy Nix to attend several pro days
#34fan replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First of all, -Yes it was. Secondly, Chicken#$% does not win you anything in the modern NFL... You have to take chances if you want to improve. Wilson's been a special athlete since high school. Though, you could have thought it was a fluke when he led the ACC in passing yards at NC State. But once he transferred to the Big Ten, -won that conference, and set the single season record for touchdowns at Wiconsin, SOMEONE should have recognized the possibility of this guy being GREAT. Remember Toronto 2012? Luck played no part in that 50-17 offensive CLINIC put on by the 5'10" rookie we turned our noses up on. By his third rushing touchdown, it should have been clear that Buddy, Chan, or whoever was afraid to take him was dead wrong. -Sorry, but I don't want ANY of those people making decisions for us going forward.. IMWO, it's part of what keeps us a mediocre to bad football team. For me, the Russell Wilson thing is a DEAD HORSE. Repeating that mistake however, would be a true disgrace for OBD. -

Talent is mandatory. However, drive and intelligence make the player. It's an elusive combination that was there in Russell Wilson, and is present in many two-sport athletes (I'm a sucker for them.) Until Buddy & co. stop thinking like neanderthals, we're going to end up with bust after bust. Sure, they'll pick a few good ones. Still, we'll always miss out on "the guy" because of old philosophies, and faulty metrics. Translation: Sometimes you gotta put the stopwatch down, and see where the kid's head is at. -
Who is your "I knew we should have drafted him" pick??
#34fan replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i'm not Mel kiper. LOVED the Kiko Pick. -TJ Graham, not so much. -
(screeching brakes) I'm sorry, -what?! I apreciate your opinion, and I can see how you'd feel that way. However, I'm hoping like hell OBD doesn't see things the way you do. Great players are the ones that get you to championships. And great players are the ones that win them for you. Quality players are absolutely necessary, but two Robins don't make one Batman. -Sorry.

Who is your "I knew we should have drafted him" pick??

My top two are already mentioned here. Shayne Skov and Davante Adams... We'll probably grab someone WAY too early, with an extremely high "bust" potential like Eric Ebron. -
WR's Davante Adams, and Isaiah Burse, Fresno State.
#34fan replied to #34fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The numbers Adams put up were just silly for a sophmore... He really does "snag" balls out of the air, and also toe-tap to keep his feet in-bounds. Burse was money in the slot, flat, and even coming out of the backfield. These kids really do COMPETE. -
These two were key peices in one of the most prolific passing attacks in college football. Detractors will say that both benefitted from being the favorite targets of QB Derek Carr, and a very WR freindly scheme. However, In their defense, both wide-outs DOMINATED their conference. They also PROGRESSED consistently. Their tremendous leaping ability, and great ball instincts make them serious open field threats. When you combine that with their advanced route-running skills, you'll see two kids that are as close to pro-ready as it gets. Davante Adams SOPHMORE -6'2" 215lbs, 2013: Led nation in receptions '(131) and TD catches (24) Career: 233 catches, 3030 yards, 38 TD's ADVANCED ROUTE RUNNER, SEPARATES EASILY FROM DEFENDERS, HIGH POINTS AND HOLDS ONTO BALL. Isaiah Burse SENIOR -6'0" 187lbs, 2013: 99 catches for 1026 yards, 6 TD's, average 10.4 yards per catch. 2012: 57 catches, 851 yards, average 14.9 yards per catch. Career: 209 catches. 2503 yards, 15 TD's PROJECTS AS SLOT RECEIVER. Having watched alot of Bulldog football, I believe these two will add instant lethality to anyone's offense. Adams is a beast, and I've heard Burse described as the "poor man's" Sammy Watkins. In Fairness, I also heard Colin Kaepernick described as the "poor man's" Cam Newton! I expect Adams to be gone late 1st, early second. -Even sooner, if he has a good combine. At the moment Burse is flying under the radar, and looks to be a late round-UDFA steal. Check these two out, OBD!

What Doug Marrone, and many of the OP's here don't realize is that Johnson's tendencies haven't gone unnoticed by the rest of the league. He's a marked man. The people that get paid to throw flags will be watching his every move. As will defenders who are aware of his epic gaffes. I realize that might not seem like a big deal, but it could translate to a ref taking a closer look at a celebration dance, or a corner taking wild swipe at a ball be catches, (IF he catches it.) -All little things that could shift momentum, or perhaps cost us a close game. -It's hypothetical until you consider the fact that it's happened before. Also consider the effect this could have on a locker room of talented, rookies... This is a team trying desperately to break a cycle of failure. IMO, you don't do that by hanging onto seventh rounders who refuse to fall in line. Despite many ideas to the contrary, I'm a firm believer in life after Stevie. If he were to go, I think we'd be fine. -Perhaps even improved.

6'4" 205lb 4.3 Range 40 SEC WR No One is Talking About
#34fan replied to Mark80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Huh? I posted stats and video on this Mizzou product WEEKS ago... Very touching personal story... H's been through hell, and actually graduated! -Goes a long way in my book. L'Damian really needs to refine his route running. His hands are very good, and could get better If he works on his core strength, and lower body. This kid could turn into a very reliable weapon for somebody. -I take him in the 5th-6th, if he's there. Fresno State's Davante Adams is "THE guy" as far as I'm concerned. Big, powerful, fast, agile, aggressive... Adams high-points the ball and FIGHTS for every completion. Adams has tremendous lower body control and is great at getting his feet in-bounds!!!! Kid's college stats are bannanas I got the cance to watch him a whole lot. I can say with a high degree of certainty that Adams is ready to go. PERFECT @ #9!!!!! -
It ain't harmless if it costs the team fifteen yards... It's certainly harm-FUL if you lose a game behind his tom-foolery. He's a veteran. -Agreed. Thing is, he seldom behaves like one. In fact, his behavior can range from erratic, to unprofessional, to downright detrimental within the course of ONE GAME. What exactly can rookies glean from his critical gaffes, clownish behavior, and rambling, incoherent, responses to the media? Without any malice, or vitriol I say it's time to turn the page on both Stevie AND TJ... It's an opinion. -A strong one, but in the end just an opinion... There are receivers in this draft that can step in and have an immediate, positive, impact on offense. I like that direction much more than hoping Steve Johnson finally gets his head on straight.

The Seahawks get Kelvin Benjamin? Wonderful.

Tight End Metrics for top prospects
#34fan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
EJ can really use the blocking up front. Why settle for one or the other when you can have both? AND at a bargain, no less? -I take Alex Bayer... it'll be grand theft if he's there in the 6th. -
Obviously without Stevie. -For me, anyway. Seriously, why draft a stud #1WR prospect if your'e gonna hang onto the penalty-magnet/gaffe-master/attention whore distraction-guy? I'd off-load Stevie while there's folks like you he may still have some value to. Not for nothing, but I REALLY liked what I saw from Woods and Goodwin last season. Looked to me like something to build on... Damn shame when you have more faith in your rookie's leadership skills than a six-year veteran's.
-
Steve Johnson is a seventh rounder that's been given six years to get his act together. To date, he has not. This draft features an abundance of talent at WR... Big, strong targets like Davante Adams, Martavis Bryant and Kelvin Benjamin... The bills are sitting in the catbird seat with the #9 pick overall.. At what point will somebody yell NEXT! Just sayin'.
-
Eeeeeeee. I dunno... -He's got a ligament tear on his left knee from 2011, and a DUI from 2012... Some have also suspected a weakening right knee as well... -I think he'll be there. His knees appear fine, but folks can be finicky about certain injuries these days.
-
First of all, Bills security will have truly gone to s#!* if Stevie ever has to "deal" with me. Secondly, I don't see how its vitriolic to wish we could upgrade a position that's lacking. -Forget about the P-burgh drop, the fake Plaxico gunshot, and the "happy new year" penalty for a second. Stevie had 2 HUGE gaffes this season... One, a drop in the first game against the Patsoes, the other, when he fumbed away a game-ending catch vs. ATL. I mean seriously; Why am I NOT worried about rookies Goodwin and Woods when the Ball is thrown their way, yet TERRIFIED when Steve Johnson is the intended target? BECAUSE HE MAKES STUPID MISTAKES. Yah sure, we all do. -I get that. That doesn't mean we shouldn't have to pay for them. Stevie's poor judgement, and acute narcissism are really the larger problems here. I think we can put Stevie in the same sentence as the Demaryius Thomas's, Anquan Boldin's or Larry Fitzgerald's of the world when he focuses, and eliminates the unnecessary stupid from his game. -IMO, that can't happen with a coaching staff, and fan base full of enablers.
-
The pick for us is Skov. I think we pull the triger on him in the 3rd or 4th. I truly feel the Chargers will snatch up on Van Noy with their pick at 25. Some see the bolts taking a corner or tackle that high, but not me... I also feel the Bolts will Grab Michael Sam in the middle rounds (if he's there) Sam is a high intensity, high-motor Ray lewis-type, and I expect they'll try him out in the middle.
-
Steve Johnson has a propensity for making critical errors (mental, and professional) when games are on the line. Does it happen every down? -No. Has Steve Johnson has productive seasons? -Yes. Going forward however, the question you should ask is: Does this player have the character, (maturity, leadership ability) to become a true #1 WR, or is he just a very talented distraction. I've made my choice, and I stand by it. -Show me any stat you want and it won't matter. Stevie's antics have made him an obstruction, instead of an asset. Both him AND TJ can be upgraded this draft as far as I'm concerned.
-
The speeding tickets give me pause... IF he truly drives like a maniac, I think it's a big deal... Thinking back to Marshawn Lynch, I'm worried the kid could actually hurt himself or someone else behind the wheel of a speedy, big-engine, torque-monster. Very tempting offer but I have to say NO to Clowney. -For many reasons other than the one mentioned here.
