  1. Have Ken Dorsey, Josh Allen and the offense go watch some film on the Kansas City Chiefs. When teams take away the deeper shots, they seemingly have no pivot. It's just the QB running for his life and throwing into coverage, usually forcing it to Stefon Diggs. The Chiefs lost their best deep threat in the offseason (Tyreek Hill), and have continued to roll on offense this season by simply being patient and attacking underneath. They haven't been perfect either, but the shorter elements I see in their passing attack could definitely be a helpful adjustment for us. As many pointed out, we absolutely MUST get Dawson Knox involved in the passing game. Hitting him with some quick releases would help tremendously when teams are playing back in coverage. Slot receiver is a big problem. Losing Jameson Crowder hurt way more than anyone expected, and Isaiah McKenzie is not the answer there. I know he's a rookie, but I don't understand why Khalil Shakir is not getting more snaps. Nyheim Hines needs to be heavily involved, starting this week. I want to see this team incorporate some more swing passes and screens. The lack of adjustments (on both sides of the ball) are infuriating with this team.
  2. Football teams work like dominos. When one part of the team struggles, it often bleeds over and causes other areas to look worse too. After a day like yesterday, it's going to feel like everything on the team is horrible. Bottom line, Josh Allen is the key to this offense, and this team in general: When he is able to make quick reads and escape pressure, it makes our O-Line look decent. When he is flustered, running all over the field and making mistakes, then all of those missed blocks become way more noticeable. When he is seeing open receivers and making good throws, it seems like we have tons of weapons and can't be stopped. When he's forcing balls into coverage, it seems like Stefon Diggs is the only guy who can catch. Depending on how he's playing, he helps make Ken Dorsey look like a genius or a fool. Same thing applies to the defense. Early in the season, we were getting heavy pressure and stonewalling the run with only four guys. Now the injuries are piling up. The pass rush isn't getting home, and the run defense is starting to get gashed. We are forced to dedicate more defenders to stopping the rushing attack or blitzing. This results in more problems in coverage. Every season with Sean McDermott, we've seen these 2-3 game stretches where the team struggles to execute. Eventually they get back on track, but those lulls end up costing us homefield advantage. Once again the margin for error is gone, and Kansas City is back on our heels. One more game like Sunday, and we will be back on the outside looking in.
  3. The Eagles are a Tier 2 team (very good), playing against a tremendously easy schedule. I've watched them each of the last two weeks, and I just can't justify ranking them above the Bills and Chiefs. They did beat the Vikings soundly, so it's not totally fair to say they haven't played anybody good. But the majority of their games have been against bottom-feeders, who really pose no legitimate threat. Detroit, Washington, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Houston. These are the types of teams you can have an off-day and play poorly against, and still walk away with a win. Their victory against Dallas had Cooper Rush at QB, so I don't consider that quite as impressive either. At the end of the day, you can only beat the teams on your schedule. It doesn't come so easy in the playoffs. Despite records, I think they will have trouble against a team like San Francisco and Dallas (with Dak Prescott playing). Minnesota might not be so easy the second time around. And I still think the LA Rams and Tampa Bay will have somewhat of a late-season resurgence. I still think the Eagles will drop 2-3 by the end of the season. Good chance they still land the #1 seed, but making the Super Bowl won't be a guarantee.
  4. I agree that many fans are overreacting. But I also understand the frustration. A lot is riding on the Bills winning the Super Bowl this season. Most people believe they have the best roster in football, and with the salary cap it's only going to get tougher to keep everyone together going forward. We have also been knocked out of the playoffs by the Chiefs two years in a row. So if it somehow happens again, there is going to be real doubt whether we have the ability to get past Kansas City when it counts. So as ridiculous as it sounds, anything less than total PERFECTION is going to cause Bills fans a lot of stress and angst. Things looked great after the Rams and Titans games. We were invincible and everyone was singing our praises. Then the injuries started piling up, and we got edged out by Miami. Over the last 3-4 games, the Bills have obviously continued winning. But cracks have gradually started showing in the armor, and a team that looked totally unstoppable has appeared mortal at times. Not sure that trading future assets for a single player makes us a Super Bowl lock (which is what everyone really wants), but it may help us mentally feel that way for a couple weeks...
  5. The Packers gameplan had them down 24-7 at halftime. With the Bills offense playing their sloppiest and ugliest half of the entire season, the Packers then wasted almost an entire quarter of play to get themselves a whopping THREE POINTS. The opportunity was there for them to get back into the game, and they completely squandered it. Meanwhile, we just sat back in nickel defense and laughed as they drained the clock away. The Jets can run the ball all they want. They might even have some good rushing stats at the end of the day. And then they can proudly look at the 35-13 scoreboard, and be happy we didn't put 50 on them.
  6. After the game, Von Miller pretty much admitted the Bills were letting the Packer run. And just watching the game clock disappear. It was like watching the Packers play chicken with a semi-truck, and were just too stubborn to switch and throw the ball. My hope is that Dorsey is just sticking with what is working (until it doesn't), and is saving everything else for bigger moments later in the season. I guess we will find out as the season continues. I definitely think the coaches are getting on him about running, especially late in games they have already wrapped up. There were a lot of people complaining about that during the Titans game especially. On that first INT though, I think he could have gotten to the marker and slid without even taking a hit. Watching the game, I really felt like Josh Allen was forcing the ball trying to bulk up his stats. But after the game, I think it was more due to the trash-talk going on with the Packers players. The Bills were trying to embarrass them with a blowout, and lost their composure.
  7. If you have NFL Sunday Ticket and flip around during a normal Sunday, you will eventually discover that: Even the best teams/players have frequent stretches of poor play Every team has weak points that can be exploited Most games finish within one score, and are a couple plays away from a different team winning So yes. Expectations for this team are beyond outrageous. We pretty much have to blast every opponent by 20+ points, or we are considered frauds. I literally had a person tell me today that he's off the Bills Super Bowl bandwagon, because they should have beaten the Packers by at least 14 points. (I'm sure it had nothing to do with him being a compulsive gambler who bet the spread... 🙄). Apparently now the Chiefs should be everyone's favorite (again)... despite them just losing to the Bills head-to-head at home, also losing to an awful Colts team, and barely scraping out games against the Chargers and pathetic Raiders. Personally, I think it's telling that our team clocked out at halftime... and still beat (back to back MVP) Aaron Rodgers and his team that's finished with 13 wins three seasons in a row... by DOUBLE DIGITS.
  8. The Packers were trying to get the Bills defense out of nickel, so they could take shots downfield. But Leslie Frazier wouldn't take the bait. Green Bay's first two drives of the second half ended up taking over 11 minutes, and led to a whopping 3 points. Let other teams worry about yardage stats and defensive rankings. Our opponent basically ran the clock out on themselves. I have a much bigger issue with Ken Dorsey last night, as opposed to Leslie Frazier. While our defense seemed more concerned with walking out with a W, I got the impression our offense was trying harder to get fantasy stats and help Josh Allen's MVP bid. This was a perfect game to really get the run-game rolling. Especially late in the second half. We should have been handing the ball to Singletary and Cook. But we started getting too cute trying to run up the score, and ended up getting horribly sloppy. Allen should have been able to run for the 1st down on one of his INTs. The second was clearly him trying to force the ball into the endzone so he could get a third TD.
  9. My issue with Isaiah McKenzie is his consistency. Yes, he's had three touchdowns and a handful of big catches. He also would have the game-winning TD against Miami, if Josh Allen hadn't rifled it into the turf. I would also like to see us bring back the occasional motion/hand-off, which he has often excelled on. He's also got a handful of really bad mistakes over the first 6 games. The INT off his fingers in Los Angeles. Failing to fall down on the final drive in Miami. Not paying attention on the pitch/fumble in Kansas City. Followed by the endzone trip in Kansas City. As opposed to his predecessor (Cole Beasley), he just doesn't seem clutch and reliable. Which is what I want from the starting slot receiver.
  10. For me, it's a constant battle with my PTSD from the 90s. Logically, I know the Bills are the best team in the NFL. Logically, I know a quarterback as great as Josh Allen is almost certain to get a ring eventually. Logically, I know failure from 25-30 years ago has nothing to do with this franchise today. Logically, I don't believe in sports curses or that certain teams having more bad luck. But at the same time, I've been watching this team since the late 1980s. I've seen some incredible teams and fantastic players come through, and still have NEVER had our season end on a positive note. All I can remember is a bunch of heartbreak (1990s), sandwiching a never-ending playoff-less streak of terribleness and mediocrity (2000s and most of the 2010s), and finally now three more seasons of heartbreak (2019-2021). Football is also the only sport I really care about, so this is really all I've experienced in my life. Tremendous post.
  11. This exactly. The offense is doing great. The team is winning. That is all that matters. Film is showing that Dawson Knox is being used way more as a blocker this year. His lack of production is not due to poor play, injuries or mental issues involving his brother. At some point, defenses are likely to adjust to what the Bills are doing. That is when Ken Dorsey can switch things up, and start using the Tight End more in the passing game. It's great to have something we can pivot to.
  12. Crazy. Only a few years ago, people were saying how much young QB talent there was in the league. It seems like a bunch of quarterback stars have either retired in the past few years (Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees), or just suddenly hit the age wall this season (Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady). Many of the up-and-coming guys who showed early promise have since fallen-off (Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Baker Mayfield) or really started sliding backwards (Kyler Murray, Dak Prescott). Deshaun Watson's career has been totally derailed by off-field issues. Last year's draft class has been profoundly disappointing (Trevor Lawrence, Zack Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields). And this year's class was considered weak from the start. But possibly the biggest issue is that Patrick Mahomes/Josh Allen are playing at such a high level... everyone else seems weak by comparison. Justin Herbert is literally setting yardage records for his first 2-3 seasons, but STILL seems a couple tiers below those guys. Same thing with Joe Burrow and even Lamar Jackson. In the past, fans would feel pretty good about having young QBs like Tua and Mac Jones on their team. But in reality... what are the chances those guys are going to lead their team to an AFC East Championship any time soon?
  13. I'm an old-timer who still has PTSD from the 90s Super Bowls. Guessing by your username, maybe you have managed to get over it. Until the Bills finally get that monkey off their back and hoist the Lombardi, I will be more worried about them blowing it. Doing that with Tom Brady would be the worst thing. Ever.
  14. I'm going with Odell Beckham Jr. Christian McCaffrey would definitely improve our backfield and be an upgrade over Devin Singletary/James Cook. He would also provide a new aspect to our offense, giving us a huge threat coming out of the backfield. It's one thing we currently don't have. But OBJ gives us something better. Security. Our offense is already #2 in points per game and #1 in yardage. We barely punt already. We don't really need a boost on that side of the ball, as much as we need a backup in case of emergency. Our worst games passing happened with Gabe Davis hobbled and Jake Kumerow injured. If something happened to Davis again or Stefon Diggs, this offense would certainly take a huge dip. Along with Kumerow, we also have Jameson Crowder done for the season. Isaiah McKenzie has been very mistake-prone. And the coaching staff doesn't seem thrilled with putting a rookie Khalil Shakir into the starting lineup. So the place is already there for OBJ to slide into the lineup.
  15. I voted for the Vikings. They are the only team on the list who hasn't won a Super Bowl. Can't believe how many people said the Bucs. The entire two weeks of lead-up would be torture, worrying about the possibility of losing to Tom Brady. Even if we won, how could anyone stand seeing Brady in yet another Super Bowl? And it sure would be tempting for the refs to give the old man a few breaks, so he could go out on top one more time. No thanks.
  16. The Eagles are a good team, with lots of talent on both sides of the ball. Before the season, I fully expected them to win the NFC East and be a sleeper Super Bowl contender (mostly due to a weak conference though). Jalen Hurts has also taken a big step this season. With that said, I don't think they have been challenged much in the first six weeks. Almost every season a surprise team comes out hot with an early winning streak, and fades-off as the season goes on. Back in 2008, we started 4-0 with Trent Edwards and people were talking about us finally getting our franchise QB. We ended the season 7-9 and missed the playoffs.
  17. I had some thoughts, but this post pretty much summarizes everything.
  18. Every season, there are multiple "surprise" teams after the first 5-6 games. Things will start settling over the next month. The Jets are overachieving a little. But honestly, I don't think anything in the AFC East has been totally shocking so far. The Dolphins have been a 9-10 win team each of the last few years. Everyone should have expected them to be competitive and in the Wild Card hunt. And everyone should have expected them to struggle with their 2nd/3rd string QB under center. The Patriots roster lacks talent, but they know how to keep games close and scrape out more wins than they deserve. Reminds me of us with Dick Jauron. They looked like a .500 team that would need to rely on the defense and run game. They will win maybe 7-8 and fall short of the playoffs. The Jets have tons of young talent. Lots of people figured they could win 6-8 games this season. I still don't see it with Zach Wilson, and think they will drop back to Earth in the coming weeks.
  19. I'm a fan of Isaiah McKenzie. But after yesterday, I'm done with him in the starting lineup. For every big play he provides, he also gives us some kind of mental mistake. In the first six games of 2022, he's already given us multiple dropped passes (including one that led to an interception, and one that cost us a touchdown), a fumble where he wasn't paying attention... and his failure to go down in the Miami game cost us a chance to kick the winning field goal. As Tony Romo said yesterday. There isn't a defense in the NFL capable of stopping us on a consistent basis. Almost every time we fail to score, it's because of a self-inflicted wound. Not because the opposition FORCED us into a mistake. If we fail to score 30 points in any game, it will be due to dropped passes, fumbles, penalties and other dumb errors. Not because the other team outplayed us. The Bills already have multiple explosive players. Josh Allen. Stefon Diggs. Gabriel Davis. Dawson Knox. What we need from our slot receiver is consistency. A guy we can count-on to make the tough 4-5 yard catches on 3rd/4th down and keep a drive moving. McKenzie is the type of player who could make a big 15-20 yard play in those situations. Or he might drop a catchable ball.
  20. After watching yesterday's game, I'm convinced nothing is going to change significantly in how the Bills defense plays against the Chiefs. The Bills strategy is to keep everything underneath, and make sure they don't get beat over the top. Even without Tyreek Hill to worry about. They aren't going to blitz a lot. They aren't going to double-team the tight end. They aren't going to chip him at the line. The are going to go 95% nickel defense (some dime) and try to pressure the QB with 4 guys. Sean McDermott and Leslie Frazier believe that by constantly forcing them into long drives, they will make just enough mistakes where our offense can outscore them. The Chiefs played very good, but Mahomes did throw two interceptions. We made two unforced errors (both on Isaiah McKenzie) and still ended up winning at the end.
  21. Interesting numbers. They haven't exactly played a bunch of scrubs at the position either. Mark Andrews is possibly the next best TE in the NFL after Travis Kelce. The others are Tyler Higbee, Austin Hooper, Mike Gesicki and Pat Freiermuth. All guys capable of making plays in the passing game. As I said in another post... there is a domino effect when you upgrade the D-Line. Not only are they getting a better pass rush and more stops in the run game, but they are really freeing up the Linebackers at the second level. When Matt Milano, Tremaine Edmunds and Taron Johnson (we can throw him into this discussion) don't have to worry about what is happening at the line of scrimmage, it gives them an extra step in coverage.
  22. I will just say it. DaQuan Jones has been just as important of an addition to the D-Line as Von Miller. You can easily see how the blocking attention that Miller commands is helping the pass rush. But the job Jones is doing at 1-Tech is allowing our linebackers to have career seasons, so far. Considering the Chiefs current (quick-strike, dink/dunk) offense, Jones may actually be more important for us on Sunday. Stopping the run without our linebackers cheating-up will help us keep them in 3rd-long, and allow our coverage to better contain Travis Kelce.
  23. When I say "superior", that doesn't mean I'm expecting a guarantee blowout/beat-down victory. Not by any means. However, I do understand why the Bills are favored in this game, despite it being in Arrowhead. You are correct in saying the gap between most NFL teams is not very large. I believe we are significantly better than Miami, even with the injuries. But 3-4 mistakes on our side was enough to put them ahead in Week 3. If the Bills come out and play their normal game, limit unforced mistakes and keep the turnover battle even... I have no doubts they will win. Possibly even by double-digits. The difference between the defenses is just too lopsided, and I think we can get 2-3 more stops as the game presses on.
  24. Didn't see it, but I guess great minds think a like. If the Chiefs are getting rid of the ball quickly, we probably aren't going to see many sacks. Regardless of how improved the D-Line is. That is just reality. My question is whether McDermott/Frazier will be willing to press-up on the offense a little this time. Our history against the Chiefs is to keep everything underneath and force them into picking down the field. Part of it was the fear of Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill. Part of it was just our own tendencies on defense. But without Hill, I think the Bills need to do more to challenge them on the short stuff.
  25. Here is the way I see it: In 2020, the Chiefs were clearly the better team. More talent and more experience. I knew it going into both games (regular season and the playoffs), but hoped they would make enough mistakes for us to pull it out. That didn't happen, and they solidly beat us both times. Last year, I felt we pulled even. Going into the first regular season matchup, I think we had more incentive to get that monkey off our back and played harder. But the divisional playoff game was the definition of an evenly matched 50/50 game. This year, the Bills are the superior team. We have more talent on paper, and I've been more impressed with our performance over the first 5 games. In past years, I think Kansas City had the edge on offense. Losing Tyreek Hill brings the two teams back to the same level. - Quarterback play is about as even as you can get. Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes is a wash. - Both have elite #1 receivers (Stefon Diggs vs. Travis Kelce). The Chiefs have been stronger on the ground, but the Bills have more receiving weapons. - O-Lines are both solid/above average, with some inconsistent streaks against elite D-Lines. Where the Bills truly have the edge is on defense. The Chiefs have some good individual players like Chris Jones and Frank Clark. But overall, the Bills are way better on all three levels - D-Line, Linebackers and in the Secondary. The Bills defense is currently ranked #1 in points against, #4 against the pass and #2 against the run. For comparison, the Chiefs are ranked 23rd in points against, 24th against the pass and surprisingly 3rd against the run (despite getting totally gashed by Josh Jacobs on Monday night).
