Playoff Solutions Assuming they don’t replay the Bengals game.
T.E. replied to Locomark's topic in The Stadium Wall
Who did? Taylor came out today and said that McDermott told him he needed to be at the hospital with Hamlin rather than coach. A courageous and admirable decision, but other teams can't be disadvantaged because of it. -

The Bills are the ones who ultimately chose to not finish the Bengals game. This was the right call, but they cannot be rewarded with the #1 seed without finishing that game, which seems to be an unlikely outcome at this juncture. If anyone gets the short end of the stick here, it's unfortunately going to be them. -

Removing games under any circumstances is wildly unfair to other teams and will hopefully never happen. -
Yeah, that's all too easy to say now that's he's retired. The reality is that we may not know about Hamlin's long-term prognosis for awhile. Does the team not play until (hopefully) he's out of the woods? That just doesn't seem realistic. Do you think the majority of them would be okay punting the rest of the season away. My guess would be no, but I don't personally know any of these guys.

They wouldn't be publicly fined, but there would be some strong behind-the-scenes coercion to play that game. It affects like four different teams in regards to playoff seeding. Five, if you count Buffalo.

If Cincinnati beat us in this hypothetical game, they would get the #2 seed and avoid a possible trip to Buffalo in the playoffs. They'd definitely be playing to win there. -

Do you honestly think it's fair for the Bills to play the Bengals in a Week 19 scenario, lose, then play a rested and healthy Ravens or Chargers team coming off a bye, even though we'd be the higher seed? This is a much worse scenario for the team than being forced to forfeit the Cincinnati game, to be honest. -

You can't give the Bills a win for a game that lasted eight minutes before ending with Buffalo trailing. At the end of the day, we chose not to finish the game (the 100% right decision), so we're going to have to be inconvenienced the most regarding the solution. Being gifted homefield will, again, put a giant asterisk next to a possible Super Bowl win. Nobody wants that. It's not really fair, and it sucks that this is the way it is, but there is also no plausible way that the Bills can be rewarded here. -

If the Chiefs and Bengals win this week, and the Bills lose, that essentially takes care of the seeding dilemma for the most part, right? NFL is probably holding out on that possible outcome before making any decision. -

He could be in limbo for awhile. The idea that the team simply doesn't play until his prognosis is 100% certain is unrealistic. -

If we finally win a Super Bowl, I would like it to be under circumstances where a giant asterisk is not attached to it. Just forfeit the Bengals game and go into the playoffs as a 3 seed. They'll have to do it the hard way, but that's how they've been doing it all year anyway. -

The league ,though, owes it to the other teams to create as level a playing field as possible. -

So other teams (like KC and Baltimore) get punished while the Bills and Bengals get rewarded? How is this remotely fair to teams that weren't even involved in the actual game? I'm sure McDermott considered that not finishing the game could possibly result in a forfeit. He didn't care, and I'm glad he didn't it, because it was the best decision for his players. -

This is the only scenario that seems even remotely likely. The idea that both teams could somehow forfeit yet still get a win is a pipedream. It was an incredibly unfortunate thing to happen all the way around. It is what it is. -
The big difference is that the Hamlin tragedy happened on the field. You're asking guys to come back to participate in an activity quickly after watching a teammate possibly lose his life during said activity. For this reason, I do not think the Bengals game will ever be completed.

The more I think about it, the only scenario that seems plausible is the league offering a make-up date to continue the game, and the Bills declining and choosing to forfeit. Any other scenario disadvantages too many other teams and, while that is far from the most important issue right now, it simply is something that won't be entertained in the name of competitive integrity. -
Bills at Patriots, November 29, 1998 ending

I was 14 and remember this game like yesterday. Just an unbelievable screw job. That spot on the Jefferson catch and than the PI call on Henry Jones make up the worst sequence of officiating I've ever seen. Even after the game, Ty Law was like, "A lot of the young guys are excited, but the vets know we kinda stole that one." -

He's been accused of sexual assault two other times. That's why people could see him doing that. -

I'm a die-hard Bills fan that lives in DC, so I've seen a lot of both teams. Ranking Taylor over Cousins is laughable. Look at it this way, if Washington offered Buffalo Cousins for Taylor straight-up, the Bills would say "yes" in a heartbeat. The Bills would probably have to offer the Redskins Taylor plus their #1 pick to get Cousins. -
It was a total cheap shot, and Ward was no where close to the player that Moss and Owens were. Some guys benefit from the teams they're on, and Ward was fortunate to play on a Steelers team that always had a great defense, good running game, solid coaching, and a probable HOF QB. Sure, he outworked Moss in regards to effort, but you couldn't say the same about TO.

I always thought that Lonnie Johnson was going to have a breakout year sooner or later...yikes.
