  1. i gotta tell ya, from that pic they have of Howard's daughter she might make the canine top 100.  Yikes!  She can't be that freakin' ugly...can she?

well get used to her, she's going to be in the next Spider-Man movie.

  2. when XP requests the original ME software, will it recognize the Recovery CD or do I actually have to have like an ME only cd- rom?

I ordered the Seagate hard drive that was pinned in a previous post. Good price. Be here in 3-5 days

When do I have to start worrying about other components failing, like the processor?

  3. Are you getting a D: drive icon?

Also, find out where "Command Prompt" is hiding (Win used to call it MS-DOS Command Prompt). Mine is in Programs > Accessories.

Invoke it and type D: and see if the partition is recognized. If not...hmmm...partition table might be corrupt.

If it is recognized, type in DIR/w and see if you get a list if its content.

Note: How old is the IDE drive cable? They do fail, and make for oddball problems. I can't say that's the problem here - doubtful - but a swap-out eliminates that variable - and if you end up getting another drive anyway, I'd recommend it. Be sure to get the proper one.

You might want to try booting from the XP cd-rom and see what you can find, too.

If you are familiar with FDisk, you can use it to check partition status - BUT if you are not, don't use it - a wrong keystroke or two can wipe out everything.

As to the slow-down you mention - dunno; sounds more s/w than h/w to me.

ok, so i tried that command prompt thing and it said that D; wasnt recognized. What do I do using the XP-cd rom?

  4. Aw man, my buddy and I got 2 free tickets for the LA Avengers vs. Arizona Rattlers Arena Football game at the Staples Center today at 12noon. Not only were the tix free, but they were in the Kodak Box Suite. Turned out to be a good game, 40-38 was the final. All kinds of honeys bouncing around. Not too thrilled about paying 8.50 for a Bud Light though. Oh yeah, the weather outside afterwards was beautiful, 420 all day

  5. Great stuff, this is a learning process for me so I appreciate the help. Couple more questions, Do I put the new drive in a vacant slot or do I swap it out with the exsisting one and put the old one in the new slot and can I transfer settings like, say, my browser bookmarks and things of that nature.

  6. Ok, going to start looking for a new one this weekend. The comp I have now came with System/Application/Driver recovery disks. The OS that was pre-installed was Windows ME. I bought the XP upgrade last year(thats when I started encountering performance problems). Which of these should I use when the installation is complete?

  7. yes, its just one physical drive. Just curious as to why the D drive failed. I pretty much have everything backed up and I know how to transfer my music files from my iPod back onto a desktop hard drive, but theres about 75 songs I bought from iTunes that are only on my D drive, any way to acess the D drive? Also, could I add another drive without taking the original out and use that as the main drive? Thanx again.

  8. I chose the name PromoTheRobot because anyone who grew up in Buffalo in the 60's and 70's would get it.  How many mornings would we spend eating corn flakes, huddled around the black & white Magnavox, watching Bugs Bunny cartoons before we walked to school?

Ah, those were the days. Eating Count Chocula, getting ready for elementary school. I remember they would play these educational cartoon shorts, one was called " The Most Important Person". Living in Rochester, sometimes the reception would be pretty bad, but I would still watch it.

Here's another kids television gem from the 70's thats out on DVD now.
