Regarding MCAS and the issues surrounding it, there is a justifiable reason why it wasn't addressed, specifically. There are classifications of abnormal events that pilots are trained to deal with. Very few are called "immediate action," which means they must be memorized and performed without reference to a checklist. One of them is "runaway stabilizer." That means that if the stabilizer, which is the pitch, (nose up or down), changes rapidly without command, you have to stop it. It is extremely obvious if this happens, and the procedure is to immediately disconnect the stabilizer for auto control. Boeing put MCAS in to handle a near stall situation. But.....The situation of an unnecessary MCAS activation is the exact same as a runaway stabilizer and should be reacted to in the same, memorized manner. Both MCAS crashes were in third world airlines where the pilots did nothing to stop it, and the "fix" is simple and obvious. In the first case, they simply rode the thing into the water. In the second, they initially disconnected the autopilot, which stopped the problem, then for some insane reason reconnected it, resulting in the crash. The odds of that happening in a US or first world trained cockpit are near zero. That aside, the fact that a single sensor could trigger it, especially one on the outside fuselage, is a really bad and since corrected, idea. The philosophies of Boeing and Airbus are a bit different. Airbus marketing strategy involved knowing they would sell to underserved markets, Africa et all, with pilots with little experience. Airbus products default to computer controlled actions. The most famous of this is their Paris Airshow demo where an Airbus did a really low flyby, and the autothrottles determined that they were so low that they were landing. The guy pulled the thing up, but the throttles remained at ide, even when pushed full forward, The ended up plowing through a one forest killing everyone on board. The Air France 447 from Rio to Paris was another of their computer fault failures that am inexperienced copilot never figured out. An iced over pitot tube was telling the system they were overspeeding, when in fact they were too slow and stalled. The captain, who was out of the cockpit at the onset, figured it out, but ran out of time.

A thoughtful, informed post deserves a serious response. Picked up out new pup last night, a fourteen week old Great Pyranees and Golden mix, so I've been a bit busy

First, I am never going to claim you are an idiot. You seem like you are familiar with this stuff, and I am not that kind of guy. But.....there are no problems with the "stability" issues re the 737. The MCAS issue was directly related to Boeing trying to get into the non first world airline base, Airbus made that decision years ago, knowing that to sell to that market, they needed to acknowledge that the people flying their airplanes would be less experienced and far less competent. Ergo, they built in a computer over man priority. MCAS failures would have never resulted in a hull loss if it happened with US or first world trained pilots. Moving to the door blow out on Alaska, it is a QA issue with the fuselage manufacturer and Boeing's inspection process after delivery. Alaska is completely innocent. Back to original point, I am never going to claim people are idiots on this, until they try to make it political. Regards.

The Middle East doesn't need the US to provoke wars. They would be far more successful at that task if left to settle their hate without other participation. None of those nations invaded the US because they don't have that capability. It has nothing to do with desire. Further, an embassy is considered sovereign territory, and those have been bombed and invaded, in Africa and the Middle East, with significant loss of human life, so spare the "morons" here that claim.

Nothing will work on me? Perhaps stop filming beheadings, or wildly optimistic, maybe just stop beheadings. Perhaps stop slaughtering people of other faiths. Maybe don't steal airliners and fly them into buildings. Let commerce exist in international waters. Stop launching unguided missiles into civilian areas. Stop starting wars and then go to useless international arenas begging to get them stopped while your getting your ass kicked, all the while complaining that you're not getting the coverage you think you deserve. Stop treating half the world's population as second class citizens becasue of gender. All that would be a start.

I strongly disagree with the "you are programmed" assertion. All that aside, you post a lot of really vituperative stuff here, and that tactic doesn't work. It may allow you a chance to vent, but it is ineffective. Here's what you posted on page 163 of this thread: "Your kids are lost. They don’t know what a boy or a girl is anymore. Your schools and churches aren’t safe. You love your guns like they’re part of the family. You can’t stay married. Your women are whores. You all cheat on each other." You have also questioned if you are "surrounded by morons" here. You think that will work? Meanwhile Hamas has controlled Gaza for years, using all of their assets to build an underground system that does nothing but support it's desire to destroy Israel. Hezbollah has done the exact same thing, except on a much bigger and more dangerous scale. It causes me wo consider your claims and wonder who the real morons are?

"Suckers and Losers"---Trump on our GI's
sherpa replied to Tiberius's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
That's why I said Trumps comment was :rude, ignorant and stupid." When I said I never heard his POW actions criticized by people, I was talking about people who actually knew something about the situation. The North Vietnam POW experience caused significant changes in the US' military view of this type of thing and was responsible for changes to the "Code of Conduct," and significant philosophical and material change to POW school training. -
Don't believe rumors. The fuselage is made by Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita KS. The actual component is a non operable plug door, since US carriers have smaller passenger capacity cabins and don't need the additional escape door. Clearly, there is a QA problem at both Spirit Aerosystems and with Boeing, as they should have inspected it and noticed the issue. Either way, I'd still prefer a Boeing over an Airbus.

"Suckers and Losers"---Trump on our GI's
sherpa replied to Tiberius's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
First, whatever Trump said about him has noting to do with this. Trump's comment was ignorant, rude and just stupid. He does that a lot. But, when I got to my first fleet squadron, a number of the senior officers knew of him and his Naval career. It was universally viewed that he was not highly regarded. His record aside, he was known as a vindictive, ill-tempered individual known for holding grudges and acting on them. There were other personal questions that I won't go into. All of that aside, he was an honorable POW, as were almost all of them. Nothing tremendously special like Jim Stockdale or Jeremiah Denton, but honorable. The people who don't know of that falsely accuse him of things regarding that are completely unfair. Either way, when I see someone post that all Republicans should be like him, or that he "understands civility," that is 180 out from the view of the people who worked for him during his active duty time. Kind of a funny story. I flew with his son as my first officer a number of times during his presidential campaign, always NY-Tokyo. On night, on a trip I wasn't on, he was out for dinner in Tokyo at a favorite airline restaurant, and he and his crew were seated near a British Air crew and one of the BA guys was trashing McCain, stating he was going to invade Iran. McCain, the son, disputed this. The BA first officer kept claiming it was true, and his son kept refuting the claim. The BA guys "how do you know? Why are you so sure," and he says, "becasue he's my Dad and I talk to him a lot." -
"Suckers and Losers"---Trump on our GI's
sherpa replied to Tiberius's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You can call me whatever you want. The man was an honorable POW, and I know of nobody who criticizes that. What you cannot do, and why I have always looked at him realistically, is be aware of what those who served with him away from POW camp thought of him. He was not well thought of in that community. That's the reality, not matter what you choose to call me. -

I'll trust the scores of other POs's that served with him. You don't matter. -

McCain was an honorable POW. The people who served with him would grant that, but other than that he was not well thought of. Really not well thought of. His political career is a different subject. -
Lloyd AUSTIN should be FIRED!!
sherpa replied to Biden is Mentally Fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
He has cancer and the US has a very specific chain regarding the utilization of nuclear weapons, and the Sect. of Defense is an integral part. His cancer is not a consideration when protecting that chain. -
I always am amazed when people here tell other people what they will do. I have never voted for Trump and will never do so. Insanity. Three minutes? You should have spent more time.

I can't believe you have actually dreamt this hypothetical. Are you completely unaware of the other players in this scenario? First, the US Congress would never pass a law that would commit the military to becoming an extension of some nut's campaign staff. Second, the military is not composed of a group of robots. The very first thing I was asked during my initial interview for Nava Aviation Officer Candidate's School related to political views and I answered that as a military officer I was to conduct myself in an apolitical fashion. While having views, which these highly educated skilled professionals do, the fastest way to lose your career is to express political or religious views in a work setting. Believe whatever you want, and those discussions among peers do occur, but never in a work scenario. It is an all volunteer organization, and people don't sign up and stay in to be used as political weapons. If that were to occur, the organization would disintegrate. Sometimes these views are like reading the comments section of Youtube. Interesting only because of the the shear madness expressed. I believe her strategy is going to unfold towards what you are suggesting if she gets enough traction in the early primaries to seriously threaten him. To add to your view, she, and any breathing Republican still in the race would destroy the man currently in office in any debate. That is the ultimate goal.

Because it's illegal. You'd make the order? You'd be impeached and convicted at the speed of light. The suggestion is idiotic, and the product of someone incredibly ill informed about law and the military. If understanding that, and trying to explain it to you and your wingy makes me a troll, so be it. I see it as a service.
-
Too much you don't understand about this. I don't have any interest in informing you.
-
I have no interest in responding to these ignorant fantasies. The issue is not with those who would not respond to an illegal order, it is with those who would issue an illegal order. They would be removed instantaneously, and the issue would never come to whether or not such an idiotic and illegal order was responded to.
-
Idiotic. You clearly don't understand this. I am repeatedly surprised by how little a couple of people who post here regularly know about these issues.
-
Ya I do know. The evidence is overwhelming that you have absolutely no idea about the UCMJ or what that entails. Similar to the red tail guy's claims months ago about the US using it's military to strike domestic targets. The same as you have absolutely no idea about weapons selection regarding mission goals, and how that issue determines what is used. No surprise there, but your posts are funny.

They wouldn't show up. She has said, repeatedly, that the man was OK when he was elected, but that time has passed and everything about him is surrounded by chaos, and we don't need nor want that. She says it all the time. She is correct, and that's why I like her. She certainly is not "spineless," per your claim.
-
I believe she has.

Not knowing the Secretary of Defense was not functioning is the final straw of many final straws, including not being able to know where he is or complete a coherent sentence. This Administration is dysfunctional, incompetent and needs to be replaced.

What are YOU doing to get the Bills into the playoffs?
sherpa replied to stevestojan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Two birds with one stone strategy. My plan is to tell my wife in the morning that I had a dream that if we had consensual....the Bills would win. If we didn't, it's on her.
