Marvin Ellison takes over as CEO of Lowes on July 2. He did fairly well at Penny's, which is a disaster, and was at Home Depot for twelve years before that. Stock is up 15% since late May.

We went there about five years ago. If you are a veteran, you can fold the flag when it is lowered at dusk, after Taps is played at the Normandy American Cemetery, which is US ground. My wife was a Navy nurse, and I a naval officer/aviator, so we got to fold it together. Quite an honor. The German cemetery there is impressive as well, but looking at the gravestones, it is striking how young those kids were. Reagan's 40 year speech:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTLVIp1AjAg

The Battle of Midway 76 years ago today
sherpa replied to RochesterRob's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I've read "Shattered Sword," and pretty much everything related to the battle. As an "operator" and not an "academic," which most of these works are authored by, it amazes me how we won this battle at all. Absolutely ridiculous to strike a carrier task force with high altitude B-17's. Total failure. Same for the torpedo bombers the US launched. Totally decimated. Their major contribution was to draw the Zeros down to the surface, which ultimately allowed the dive bombers to reach their targets. Only a few, but with very bad Japanese damage control and basic ship design, along with the Japanese principles of refueling and rearming their airplanes on the hangar decks, it was doom when a bomb got through. -
Flooring - Which is best - Need avice
sherpa replied to CountDorkula's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I used to travel to South America a few times per month, so I got quite familiar with hardwood flooring, and when we built the house we are in now, I purchased it there and had it shipped. The point is that if you have a heavy dog, you need a hard wood. There is an international scale called the Janka hardness scale. Here's a link: http://tinytimbers.com/janka.htm Scale down the page and you can see ratings for the various species. If it was me, I wouldn't get anything softer than red oak, about 1300 on the scale. Pre-finished means it probably has beveled edges. I prefer it sanded and finished on site. I was never a fan of the tight grain on oak, so I bought a slow growth South American product, but that's personal taste. I liked it so much I got a contract to provide it for a 24 unit condo building here. In the US it's called Amendoim, Ybyraro in South America. Amendoim -
No. There's no way to do it at self checkout. Have to have a cashier input. Not a problem in my area.

Both Lowes in my area do the military discount. Once registered, which is really easy, they just ask for phone number at cashier. I use it constantly.

Really stupid waste of time. I hope this isn't a trend.

I've carried her to Sao Paulo a couple times, and scoped her out pretty close during the 2.5 hour rest breaks. She has strong features, but a really athletic body. -
Now you tell me? I've been trapped in our public library for seven years. Nothing left to read.

Gas Prices Are Rising

Your knowledge of the oil market mirrors your perceptive capability of people who post here. Neither is worth paying attention to. -

Keep focusing. I'd bet you are what's known in the securities industry as a contrary indicator. -

I have no interest in "getting back to you." I have no interest in "complaining" about you. I commented on your post alleging price gouging, which indicated complete ignorance of the oil market. Stay focused. -

That is not possible now. The US has far too much oil production capacity to be impacted by a cartel embargo. -

Have you ever considered the option of spending the time you spend on these ridiculous finger pointing efforts in educating yourself on these issues? Oil is an international commodity. The US doesn't determine prices, and world GDP is expanding. Prices on gas, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil etc., are based on crack splits and refinery options. Demand for oil is quite high recently. OPEC still has production controls in place and Venezuela is self imploding, taking it's contribution to the world market with it. It takes time for producers to respond, and at $70/barrel, you can bet additional supplies will come on line if that price is sustained. It isn't gouging or Republican caused. -
Are we ramping up to war with North Korea?
sherpa replied to dpberr's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
It wouldn't matter if I was. A doctorate from Harvard grants no prescience regarding North Korea, that regime or their intent. Anybody with any common sense and knowledge of the history of the Kim family regime knows this wasn't going to produce desired results. It was a show. Sometimes a show can lead to more productive opportunities, but this wasn't going anywhere and looks like little more than an attempt for little Kim to get his face in the serious international media for a few weeks. We are going to come much closer to the brink before this is resolved, but it is, to use a Bills' phrase, a process. -

The only rational thing to do. Clearly, NK was not serious about ending it's offensive nuclear program. Meeting with this clown, at this stage, would have produced nothing except some ill-conceived credibility for their leadership. Both NK and China needed to be sent a message that the rest of world is not interested in theatrics. -

I am continuously amazed at the lack of effort expended to try to come to grips with these tragedies, and these latest responses are evidence of that. You don't need "dozens of german shepherds." You need a couple of trained dogs and a method of having students enter one door. Have any of you ever traveled internationally? In many customs/immigration halls, at the bottom of an escalator, moving walkway, or other funneling process, trained dogs are positioned. Usually they are drug trained, but I've talked to their handlers many times, and there are other possibilities. It isn't nearly as expensive as other options, but evidently we would prefer put up with these mass shootings rather than come up with a solution. I proposed a similar thing regarding aircraft bombings. the explosives used in those instances are, largely, odorless. We add a noxious and easily noticeable smell to natural gas so if a leak exists it is easily detected, yet we don't require explosive manufacturers to add a similar component to explosives. I proposed that to my Congressman and both senators, and each staff responded that it seemed like a no-brainer proposal. I'm told gun ammunition is detectable, but why not make it more easily detectable by adding a similar component to make its smell more noticeable? What possible objection would the gun lobby have? Nothing is free, but I doubt there would be any serious taxpayer objection, and if there was, I'd I'd be the first to donate to a dog training fund to enable our schools to have access to such a deterrent. Alternatively, we can do noting, and continue to mourn these events a few times per year, with no sign of letting up, while our extremely expensive "resource officers" who are clearly not a deterrent, do their thing after bullets are fired and lives lost. -

Dogs can be trained to smell bullets. Dogs at doors deter high school punks. Dogs are a lot cheaper than officers. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. I don't think I am, and I am tired of reading these casualty stories. -

I'm talking about a dog's ability to sniff out explosives. Bullets are explosives, and can be detected. Dogs can do this. I have been suggesting this for a couple years, having watched dogs used by customs/immigration for years. Such an obvious deterrent, and not expensive at all. A dog greets the kids as they enter, and is used for anyone allowed in after the normal start of the day. What is wrong with this idea? -

They can, easily, and the deterrent factor would be incalculable. I've proposed this idea to my local legislators, having watched the efficacy of dogs in the drug interdiction realm coming through customs for years. Makes so much sense, but I can't bang the drum any louder. -

Dogs trained to sniff out weapons at the door. Not nearly as expensive as other alternatives, and very effective. Not that hard to assign a dog or two per school and take care of it. -
The airplane was being leased from a Mexican company, and was crewed by Mexican nationals if early reports are true, so depending on the lease agreement, the embargo isn't a factor. Still, Cubana is the Cuban flag carrier. If they can't operate safely, don't operate.
