I think they should drop the 3-4 (since anyways they play more of 4-3) and have Williams and Dareus be DTs...Then have Kelsay be a DE and stop pretending that he can be a pass rushing OLB....Then draft a blue chip DE for pass rushing...Backup will be Kyle Arrington. And then finally make Wannstedt the DC to run the traditional 4-3.....We have to STOP THE RUN.....This team has no chance if they cannot stop the Run and also not run the ball. It has a game manager @ the QB, not a Drew Brees or Tom Brady
-
No Thanks. We desperately need a pass rush...A DE or Pass Rushing OLB....We were fine with our WRs at the beginning of the season, especially if Wood and Jackson come back from their injuries..It will open the passing game again.
-
That is not going to happen. Firstly, Wood was pretty dominant and having him @ center gave Fitz the extra second to throw the ball or provide the holes for Freddy to run. In fact with Wood gone, our season went down the toilet. Wood will be a top FA if the Bills do not re-sign him. He is not going to take a incentive laden contract.
-
Good Analysis...KC over Denver and Baltimore over Cincy is possible. Rest appears a little more tougher....A #9 pick again?
-
Add also Fred jackson, Scott Chandler, Eric Wood, Bell, McKelvin to that list.
-
Him and Stevie DROP too many balls....Shows a lack of concentration...especially at big moments in the game...If you can get a coaching staff to correct that, then yes.

Fire Chan.... Hire Wannstedt

Dave took the Bears and the Dolphins to playoff berths...If you call that "Sucking", I am not sure what you would call with our HCs in the last 12 years. -
The biggest FA that they would need to sign is Stevie Johnson. After that they need a OLB and another WR.

Perhaps we should stop calling it a "lack of depth"
ganesh replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not as per Poz. He himself quoted that in his press conference as the reason to play for the Jaguars. I agree that they have not had roster depth. On the other hand do you want to overpay for Poz and Whitner like they did for Kelsay...After all he was signed to big contracts before his current contract expired. Why should the Bills pay for non-contributing players. Actually, they had done that with almost everyone starting from Peerless Price to Lee Evans. The only one that was good that got away without any compensation were Pat Williams, Winfield, overrated Clements, and Jabari Greer. Of course, how they used those draft picks is another story! -
The reality of the Bills Injured Reserve List
ganesh replied to Got_Wood's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is not the number of people who went on IR, but rather WHO went on the IR. Eric Wood was the Anchor and heart-and-soul of this OL. When he was playing Center, he was constantly taking on two defenders, allowed a RB or WR to be open and also giving the extra split second for Fitzpatrick to make his pass. That extra second is a huge difference in the NFL. When Kyle Williams was in the middle along with Dareus, it was much harder to run against them in the middle than when he was not there. Once Kyle was gone, the DL went on a spiral and the defense suffered really badly. It is not that Wood and Williams are All-Pros...However, they were MVPs on the two sides of the ball for this team. Once both went down, their season went down the drain. Third: Consistency on the OL....While Bell did not go on IR, he has missed a significant amount of snaps. Once Bell and Wood went down, the OL could never get in sync and the INTs and SACKS started raising. This problem solely lies on the shoulders of the coaching staff for not having the remaining team be ready. That is what the good teams do. When they say good teams have the depth, it means the backups are well coached to take up starter job on injury. Sadly we have not found the replacements for Wood or Williams. Moving Urbik or Levitre does not solve the problems because it creates a hole in the spot they occupied. The packers became a super bowl contender only after signing Dom Capers as their DC. Before that their defense could not hold anyone's jock. Bottom line:: It is not just about players...All these players have come through the NCAA grind and were stars on their respective college football teams. They all have talent. The onus lies on the Coaching staff to put these guys in the right place to succeed. Sadly this coaching staff has done nothing of that sort. Texans, with the same level of talent went from 31st ranked defense to a Top-3 defense...Why? They hired the best 3-4 DC in Wade Phillips. The 49ers - Same talent...but a different coaching staff....Fighting for Top Seed in the NFC... The Bills have peddled horrible OC and DCs and to make it worse expect these rookie coordinators to covert players to new scheme instead of playing to the strength of the players drafted. Look at the Bills DC post the Phillips Era Jerry Gray, Perry Fewell, George Edwards.... The only year they had great success was when they had Kevin Gilbride as a OC and he played to the strength of his football team which was throwing to Moulds and Peerless Price. Steve Fairchild, Schonert, Alex Van Pelt, Modkins all have sucked, because they have no experience running an NFL program. -
Actually I hope he can bring in better coaches faster!
-
You almost make it sound that the 49ers drafted Crabtree, Willis, Gore and Staley this year and somehow also drafted and signed FA for their suddenly solid OL. Give credit to the only thing that was different for them from last season, namely a NEW Coaching Staff. The OP is completely right...Unless this team can invest in a good coaching staff (and I mean an entire staff) the talent is never going to be able to shine. Bring on a Jeff Fisher and this team will make the playoff's next season with this same crew. Sure...But that is not same as 11-3 and also it will not get them into the playoffs.
-
You mean Trent Edwards is back in Buffalo! He is failing, because his coach will not run a balanced offense, doesn't have a OL that can protect and give him time to throw and the weather is poor.
-
Belichek and the Cheatriots will immediately jump on him and Freddie will play for them for minimum Vet as long as he has a chance to go to the post season and also win a super bowl. That is the way it goes.

A Few (Very Abbreviated) Thoughts About The Game
ganesh replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Worse than Kelsay? Isn't Bell a UFA. Unless the Bills give him the franchise tag, he is as good as gone. The Bills need a pass rushing DE sorely and if there is one in the point where they draft, they got to take one. Fitz was good when he had good protection in the first 7 weeks. In fact I believe he was only sacked once during that time. Also, if Freddie comes back from injury and they can find a good FA WR as their #2 WR, the offense can resurrect (provided of course they can sign Stevie Johnson to a FA contract). Wilson may not be completely healed. When he is out there, he was playing @ probowl level. Sadly they couldn't keep that up. -
So many other issues that have a lack of evaluation 1. Inability to get your #9 pick on the field and when on the field, not being able to utilize his strengths. 2. Paid 15M for a backup QB to play the Wildcat and haven't used him since week 5 except for fair catching kick returns in the end zone. 3. Let go off Lee Evans, but has sorely lacked the instinct to groom David Nelson into that role. 4. Has a good go to TE in Chandler...yes a TE who can actually be a threat in the end zone and then suddenly he does not even see the field...I bet Chandler now will take his UFA status be the ball catcher for another team. 5. Loses Wood and plays Levitre at the most critical spot, when he was so ill-suited for that. Gailey has had a very poor personnel evaluation. He cannot put the best 11 players on the field on EACH PLAY.

Sanchez and Flacco have 1 more year
ganesh replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I almost thought you were suggesting that we get Flacco or Sanchez....They are not far off from Fitz. -
When the run game is working (TEN/MIA)
ganesh replied to Kaenon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There are so many reasons for Chan to get fired. 1. Edwards as his DC 2. No balanced offense (Wasted 1st Rd pick on Spiller) 3. Wasted 15M on Brad Smith 4. Horrible supporting cast to Dareus (Horrible OLBs) 5. Sees that Fitz is in a funk, yet has not been able to correct it. I still don't understand what they mean after the game "The loss is on me." What is the meaning of that...Are both Gailey and Fitz giving back money for every loss or guaranteeing that they will have a better effort the next week. If so, they have not done that and their post-game words mean a squat. -
When the run game is working (TEN/MIA)
ganesh replied to Kaenon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And where is the wild cat which was consistently getting us 4 yards a play early in the season. 15M wasted on Brad Smith. -
That would depend on what DC signs here.
-
I hope Gailey feels the same way, because he is not playing this team to its strengths.....You have a beat up OL and a beat up QB (in terms of confidence) and yet you throw the ball 40 times...Of course having the most horrible defense that cannot help this team makes it harder...Defense Wins championship. Unless we fix the Defensive coaching staff, the system and the players, this team is not going anywhere. Right now the fault is on Chan Gailey's shoulder for allowing this 7 game losing streak.

Jim Kelly on The Jim Rome show today
ganesh replied to Jeff Wright's Mullet's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And his salary is Vet Minimum They need a good coaching staff to groom the in-grown talent. Sadly we don't have them. See our washout of 2010 draft posted by Sal....Spiller, Troupe, Carrington, Wang,....2011 is at least showing some promise. -
The mistake we made was not making LeBeau the DC, instead keeping Jerry Gray as the DC....When Mularkey wanted to promote, it was too late as Cowher had already offered the same DC position to LeBeau and LeBeau wanted to go back to Pittsburgh. Bobby April used a clause in his contract to get out of his contract. He wanted to be given a shot at being the HC of the Bills. In hindsight, being a fiery coach, he would have motivated this team far better than what Chan has done.

The biggest FA that the Bills need to focus are their own: Steve Johnshon Scott Chandler Both have earned their money. Mathis is a cover-2 DT/DE. Not sure how he fits this scheme...Another of those smallish-DL guys. Bowe is to the Chief what Johnson is to the BIlls.. He is not going anywhere. Didn't Connor play with Poz at PSU and came out the sam year? Also, isn't he a MLB. We need OLBs that can rush the passer. Pass.

Appears a good move. Solidifies the OL. He has been good and consistent. The question now is the role of Hairston. Does he continue to play LT or goes back to being a backup and then what happens to Bell.
