Pandora 's Promise - the documentary thread
Jauronimo replied to BUFFALOKIE's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I've watched more Netflix docs than I can recall. Without Netflix I would not have the vast range of superficial knowledge about subjects that few care about. Particle Fever - i slammed a few Pumkings so that drunk me can discuss the Higgs particle at an 8th grade level. Food, Inc & Forks Over Knives - were both well done Collapse - was interesting although fear mongering and riddled with conspiracy theories The Devil Came on Horseback Escape from Suburbia Maxed Out ... What subjects are you most interested in exploring but refuse to read a book? -

Well thats clear as day. I also don't get what he doesn't understand about the question that was posed in his response to your response which was answered in the response that he didn't understand. -

Vikings place Peterson on exempt list

Agreed, but they've bungled it even worse now dishing out the most severe punishments they can with little thought. The NFL opened themselves up to all sorts of scrutiny. The Vikings changed direction three times on this one. Its abundantly clear that they are far less concerned with the actions of their players than the PR aspects. As long as the Vikings and the league are more focused on making it all go away it will only get worse. The Rice incident was a great opportunity to put an actual policy in place and then act. Instead Goodell and the Ravens said let it blow over. Then came the TMZ shitstorm where they had another opportunity to put a policy in place. Instead the team and league panicked and administered the highest form of discipline available to them. And that almost made it go away. Almost. Until people recognized Goodell's actions for what they were and started asking questions about tapes, and when, and how. Then the AP news hits and the Vikes decide they need to act swiftly to avoid the storm and deactivate AP. Then thumb in the air they determine that the wind has died down and activate AP. But the storm changes course and outrage leads them to exempt him. Now the storm turns south and the calls have started for the Panthers to fall in line and exempt Hardy. Hasty action begats hasty action. Still no coherent policy in place and worse, now the public sees precedent. Good luck rolling this one back, Roger. Expect more shitstorms as long as every situation requires immediate action instead of thoughtful action. Minimizing domestic violence is a funny way to make a moral point. -

It is the employers right to act as they see fit. Its their right to act carefully. Its their right to act hastily and awkwardly. Its the right of the Minnesota Vikings to sway in the wind and gauge media reactions, and probe around trying to find a solution that makes this all go away. I don't think they should have exercised the right to embarrass themselves but I support their right to do so. -

Before you agree with me you should know that I'm one of those people that doesn't think that AP's overzealous punishment was the greatest crime of the 21st century which means that I tacitly condone child abuse and worse. Having any contact with me makes you just as guilty. -

Usually employers have some type of coherent and consistent process to guide them while dishing out the highest levels of disciplinary action available to them. They don't make it up as they go along desperately trying to appease the angry mob. -
NEWS: The peeling away of sponsors from the NFL has begun

You sure like playing the class card. Now you're getting my joke from the last thread about how the rest of the country needs to learn that WASP-y New England values are the only values that count. Whoopings are barbaric and dogs are basically furry children. -
No he never beat his kids before the AP case, but there really wasn't any guiding principle or reason for not beating his kids. Now that the Vikings have addressed the situation, but addressed it inadequately, he is more likely to test the waters. Go cut birddog a switch. A small one. Just to see how it goes. Human beings simply do not know how to behave in polite society without rulings from the NFL. Its nothing short of miraculous that people have managed to cohabitate for millennia prior to the NFL-AFL merger and personal conduct policy.

People have always turned to the Minnesota Vikings for guidance on whether or not to beat their kids. Parents are just lost without the Vikes. Remember when Randy Moss ran over that road worker with his car because she wouldn't flag him on and then similar cases increased dramatically? Or when AP got busted for driving 105 mph and was slapped on the wrist? Everyone was driving as fast as their GEO Metros could take them (61 mph). How many sex boats have we seen since those players involved walked away unpunished? Domes are collapsing at record a pace because they're just not sure whether they should remain inflated anymore. Minnesota leads the nation whether we like it or not.

I am taking you off of my christmas card list and you are no longer invited to my birthday party. -
Stats do not lie. Nor do they tell the truth. They are just data points. The degree to which statistics may reveal truths depends on the person interpreting them.

I do not understand the constant comparisons of the AP situation to the Rice case. Most of us, including myself, do not agree with physical forms of discipline when it comes to raising children. It isn't how I was raised and I don't see it fitting in to my child rearing techniques if the day comes when a woman can prove paternity in a court of law. However, such methods are permissible under state and fed law whereas striking your spouse is not. There is quite the gray area between abuse and discipline and we've seen in this thread people attempting to draw the line based on quantity, severity, and frequency of such discipline. I think child abuse is indicative of a pattern of behavior rather than a single incident. Then there's intent. Did AP intend to hurt his child for kicks or out of anger or was this overzealous parenting? Rice certainly intended to harm his fiance. There was no other intent or greater purpose. Unless AP is found guilty of child abuse, I don't see what place the NFL has in ruling on proper child rearing practices. Its certainly the NFL's right to deal out punishments as arbitrarily as they see fit and with no regard for consistency, coherency and precedent but that system doesn't seem to be satisfying the fans. Those of you calling for justice need to take it up with your representatives.

Back in my day, we didn't just get disciplined physically by our parents. Any adult could deal out corporal punishment and it was pretty well accepted. I remember one day when Mr. Dinsdale caught me playing in the front yard, grabbed me by the arm and says 'I hear you've been a naughty boy, Billy'. He proceeds to split my nostrils open, saws my leg off and pulls my liver out. And I tell him 'My name's not Billy', and then he loses his temper and nails my head to the floor. Broke the unwritten law, he says. Never did find out what it was, but if Dinsdale said I did it then its good enough for me. He was a cruel man, but fair.
